Parrot Lady Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 what is the difference between AviGold Flax seed and the flax seed you buy at the grocery store? I think I seen some flax seen called Red Bobs at walmart it was in the organic isle is there any differnce between the two? I recieved a sample packet from Kathie at mysafebirdstore with my order today and the birds just loved it , I put just a little over their veggie dinner tonight
Ray P Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 I think the only difference between the two is the one at WalMart is human grade. I always buy human grade nuts for my birds.
Sarasota Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 If it's Bob's Red Mill, it's good stuff. Can't go wrong there.
Parrot Lady Posted September 8, 2012 Author Posted September 8, 2012 yep thats it Bobs Red Mill I just couldn't remember the name will have to get some soon
Spinner Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Go Bob's....good stuff. Human stuff is usually a lot cheaper than bird-specific food.
TeriG Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Do you have to grind the flaxseed? How much do you give? Thanks
Greywings Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I bought a little coffee grinder I use to grind the Fax seed before feeding or using in birdy bread, it grinds up egg shell also.
Wingy Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 (edited) I use it whole. If I cook oatmeal on the stove I place 1/2 teaspoon of whole flax seed in the water at the beginning. If I cook oatmeal in the microwave I add it to the water and oats and cook on high for 2 minutes or as directed on the package. I add it to Red River Cereal the same way as the oatmeal. If I add hemp seed, again about 1/2 teaspoon I add that at the beginning as well but if I add hemp hearts I just sprinkle a pinch or 2 on the top after cooking. If Jake is willing to share my breakfast with me he usually eats between 1/2 and 1 teaspoon full of cereal. Edited September 11, 2012 by Wingy
