Miffy Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 My Girlfriend just bought a 7 months old Hahns Macaw Hen, she is so affectionate, loves a roill onto her back for a tummy rub, can say a few words, step up, dance and spread her wings. Quite a little show off. Does anyone else have one on here?
CLB Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 They are adorable little birds, however, my only experience is working with a clutch this summer. My friend breeds them.
JeffNOK Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 She is a cutie. Hope to hear more about her and see more pics and vids.
Spock Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Beautiful, Thanks Maggie http://www.avianweb.com/hahnsmacaw.html
Greywings Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 They are co9ol little Mac's but the ones we have at the Sanctuary are possessed by attack attitude. Hard to clean their cages andd feed them with out loosing some DNA. One of them actually says "crusher destroyer" not kidding.
CLB Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Greywings...that is so not funny, it's funny. LOL
Miffy Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Hmm so far she shows no signs of violence only love, maybe she is a hippy bird
Greywings Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 (edited) I think it may have more to do with handling technique, pair bonding, hormonal behavior and how they trained their original families. Clever, beautiful, destructive and fascinating little jewels. One of them also says "Good morning pretty bird, Good morning pretty blah!" very funny little bird. Two of them are pretty plucked one has a unibrow and looks a bit like a Klingon the other two are in perfect feather but still very aggressive and cage protective. http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa264/Firefly_mom/MEMO0009.jpg Edited September 4, 2012 by Greywings
Miffy Posted September 3, 2012 Author Posted September 3, 2012 Have you tried red palm oil for their plucking? Hers blows kisses, says hello and step up.
judygram Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 That is a pretty bird and I know someone who has one and she has trouble handling hers due to aggression issues but it comes from a questionable past, it was a rehomed bird, a lot of it depends on who had it and how it was treated.
Greywings Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 (edited) They had plucked for years prior to their arrival feather follicles no longer produce. They are however quite happy the way they are busy and aggressive taking joy in their battles with cage cleaning attempts. Yes she looks a bit like Bert from Sesame street will try to get a better pic next weekend. Edited September 4, 2012 by Greywings
