redcyclonenc
so, my grey (jack) has had his wings clipped. i've had him since he was about 6 months old, he was hand raised- before i took him, the girl that was raising him clipped his wings. that was december 2011. they feathers haven't grown back in, well one or two has, but he has broken them off playing/falling in his cage. today (and once in a while) jack will fall in his cage, and favor his right side wing (his right), and gets anxious when i mess with it. anyways, i've attached a link to a youtube video. if anyone could have a look and either set my mind at ease, or give me any advice, it would be appreciated. here's one of him doing one of his favorite things; drinking warm water, while standing on a bowl that i am holding. Jayd
Please take him to the vet, we are not vets and cannot diagnose from a video....Thanks Jayd
redcyclonenc
ya, i took him for an unrelated issue about 6 weeks ago, and asked the vet to have a look- she just said that they were trimmed short, and should be ok. but i've been worried. Parrot Lady
I would definitly get him to a vet and yes it looks like the did a really bad job at trimming his wings , I have a friend that does my birds wings sometimes but I'am going to start takeing mine to my vet to have them done except for Brandi my baby grey I'am going to let her grow hers back out
kins2321@yahoo.com
I watched your video. I am no expert, but... it really doesn't matter! Your birds wings, need to grow in, and practicing flying needs to be encouraged, once they come in. Your bird is already trusting you! Would benefit with a vet visit, so wings can be trimmed equally. Balance is important Nancy
zandische
You might check out this thread I wrote about my bird's experience with a traumatic clipping and how we taught her to fly. Also, we had to protect the feathers that were growing in as breaking off a growing blood feather can be a potentially lethal injury. It is a sticky in the Training Room. Seraph is a very accomplished flyer now and I am happy to say she has all her feathers back and is healthy and happy http://www.greyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?191047-Flying-again-after-traumatic-wing-clip! kins2321@yahoo.com
I don't think your bird suffered from a " traumatic clipping". Feathers need to grow in. They will. Just make sure feathers are even on both sides. Nancy
zandische
Also, feathers can take awhile to grow back, especially if they are getting broken due to play. If he is breaking feathers playing in his cage, I would suggest lowering his perches until the flights grow back in. It won't prevent him from climbing, but will hopefully prevent losing his balance on a high perch. Another thing I did for my bird was line the bottom of her cage with folded up towels and put newspaper over top. That way if my bird fell she fell into a soft towel and not the hard metal bottom.
