CLB
At this point in life, I spend too much time foraging for my stuff and that of my teenagers. Could I have mine in a cup? lol I was inspired....did some shopping myself. Sorry no pics.
Darwinsmom
Oh I hear you!!! Teens here too and they'd lose their own butts of they were not attached, never mind the senile fiance! lol He's a whole other "cant find this, have you seen that" story! I'm going to be making a foraging tree for Zulu too. I have a bunch of foraging toys but I'm gong to make more and hide things. By the time he comes home I'll be worn out, but maybe he"ll be able to tell my fiance where he left his cell phone! lol
Jayd
Any of your dark green leafy veggies work, dandelion greens are the best. Suggestion, use fresh carrots, skin on and carrot tops, beets and beet tops are greyt too. Orzo pasta and Wacky-Mac, it's a tri-color Rontini pasta [beet, tomato and spinch and wheat] Rice and beans make a complete protein. We don't feed lima, pinto beans, or soy to our fids, personals reasons, if you do, cook them beyond recognition. No green bell pepers only red, orange and yellow. All most all the food you've mentioned we serve raw, unfrozen except sweet taters, beans and carrots peas and lentils. Cooking reduces nutrients and food value except where you need to remove possible toxins,, carrots values are slightly enhanced by light cooking. Beans ferment rapidly, so we don't mix them until serving. We buy small and serve fresh even with all our fids. Thanks Jayd

Darwinsmom
Thanks Jayd! Most of this will be raw, except the beans, pasta and sweet potatoes. Freezing veggies seems to keep the nutrients so we should be ok there. I was gong to try a small batch and see how it goes but I am also happy to make it fresh but for one bird its a great deal of produce to keep on hand for a couple tables spoons full of food per day where as freezing allows for batches to be made so I'm gonna give it a while and see how it goes. I may end up making and freezing the bean, rice, pasta portions and adding fresh veg daily too. I will look for dandelion greens. I wasnt sure about beets so I didnt buy any but I will!!! CLB
Such good info! I made chop today too. Wish you were closer, I was thinking how fun it would be to make chop with a friend and share between the birds. I froze mine. Shadow LOVES wacky mac! JayD....is there a reason you cook the sweet taters? I normally share my cooked sweets with Shadow but today she was munching them raw! JayD....is there a reason you cook the sweet taters? I normally share my cooked sweets with Shadow but today she was munching them raw! Sweet potato shows trypsin inhibitor activity. That means it contains an enzyme inhibitor that blocks the action of trypsin, an enzyme that digests proteins. The trypsin inhibitor prevents the digestion of protein. Sweet potatoes with higher protein levels have more of the trypsin inhibitor. This makes raw sweet potato difficult to digest. The trypsin inhibitor is deactivated by cooking. We favor raw to cook, bur sometime we have to do the dirty and cook......Thanks Jayd;)

Yes, things look good. Freezing veggies has the highest retention, but it cannot replace whats lost in cooking.. You fids can have raw pasta, not raw rice. We feed raw to 11 fids now, and in the past to 50+...It's worth the time to see them glow. What we do, 1 TO A 100, is to make only what is needed..and eat the rest.... Reminder: Rinse in apple cider vinegar and air dry... Thanks Maggie
Darwinsmom
You can feed pasta raw? I was worried it might expand after being eaten and cause a problem. I agree raw is best, unless a certain food requires cooking, like beans. I was wondering about dehyrating veggies too, to make them crisp and give them a different texture. I have a dehydrator so I can make them myself out of fresh picked organic produce.

Dehyrating veggies is good, they make nice treats,.....Pasta doesn't expand like rice, we give it as a after dinner treat, Joe calls them "Good nuts". When Spock was home, it was funny to watch them all on their perches, holding and nibbling on them, like a good cigar...lol Thanks Jayd

Cooked beans can be dehydrated for a different texture as can leafy greens. Vegies can also be chopped ultra fine and dehydrated down into spice size for topping or mixing in. (sometime you have to hide those vegies). I have a bag of dehydrated sweet potato sticks that I've been saving for when Jake comes home.
Darwinsmom
I was thinking the same things Wingy. I read about someone whose bird hated greens but served as kale "chips" they loved it. They love different textures too. I have a dehydrating machine, I got it to make my own dog treats, so I think I'm gonna give it a go. I also have a vacuum sealer machine to keep everything fresh. I will be vacuum sealing all my nuts and and stuff into small packages to keep it fresh since I bought many months worth. Edit: Also, dehydrated veggies and fruits can be used to make toys. I plan to make small holes in some of my veggies before I dehydrate them so I can string them on toys. I guess I know what I am doing today, and my beans are soaked so I'll be making mash and chop too! Edited July 10, 2012 by Darwinsmom
Greywings
You can add some fresh grated Ginger for more anti oxidants and flavor and some coconut juice is also a good addition.

Darwinsmom
Looks yummy! I plan to do fresh too but the chop helps with variety. I have skewers and foraging toys to make the fresh veg/fruit into fun toys.
Wingy
Jayd/Maggie is that roughly the content/quantity of fresh you feed daily? Do you spread it out over the course of the day or have a fresh foods meal time? I don't want to offer to much and overwhelm Jake but I don't want to offer to little either. What is the large dark object? It looks like a small black plum or dark purple grape. That meal looks tasty. Can I join you for dinner?
Spock
Thanks ZulusMom, Yes, this is their afternoon snack. This is how it is served to them and Tango gets it with more on hers. This is fruit day...Zons can have more fruit than a Grey. Salsa and Tango eats almost everything on their plate. Joey eats 1/2 to 3/4 depending on his mood. They also get fresh, hot breakfast and dinner daily. Yes, our food bill is high...lol...but they are worth the cost. Maggie
