ChicBird
Hello all, after my introduction in the newbies area, I thought I would ask my first question. I am a little confused as to what Vitamins and/or supplements I am best to give my grey? I feed him on a seed/dried fruit mix and also fresh grapes and apple. I have tried him with chicken and cheese but he wont touch them at the moment, but i wont be giving up on these. For treats he has monkey nuts & sunflower seeds. I have bought some AVICLENS water purifier and put a drop of that each day into his drinking water. Someone has mentioned to me about liquid calcium, what is this for and do i need to use this? Also what about multivitamins? I want the best for my grey and want to make sure he gets all the best possible care. Thanks in advance Jacqui
Hannah_Rae
Beyond vitamins, the advice that I've gotten is to add palm oil to food for skin/feather health. You can get it at Walmart or any drugstore. My breeder gives her birds calcium water because of how dense Greys bones are. She told me they need a lot more calcium than other parrots. You are sure to get plenty of good advice here.
ChicBird
Thanks for that. Reagarding palm oil, I know this is a cooking oil but how would i give this to my grey? Trickle it over his seed/nuts mix food?
razza45
um all you need is 1/4 of a tsp each day you want to give them the palm oil (twice a week is sufficient) but you can just add it to something that will absorb it like pellets or oatmeal.. you can check out my "unhealthy feathers" post..theres a lot of info there. lovemyGreys
Hi Jacqui, if he is eating a seed diet with fruit you really need to introduce some veggies in there as well. Dark leafy greened vegetables have a high calcium level and should be offered alongside a pelleted/ seed based diet.Foods included in this group are.. Beet Greens Broccoli Leaves Broccoli Stem Cabbage (outside green leaves) Celery Chard Chinese Cabbage Collards (cooked) Dandelion Greens Endive Kale Kohlrabi Lettuce Dark Green Leaf Mustard Greens If he will eat any of the above Jacqui you wont need to feed a calcium supplement & if he eats a variety of fruit alongside the veggies every day then he should get all the vitamins he needs.
