CharlieB
Hi, has anyone used wood from home depot to make platform or wood toys? I saw a few names that are on the safe wood list, but I'm afraid to use them. Thanks
chezron
Don't use treated wood as it contains toxic materials. Only use untreated wood that is safe for birds. Some species are better than others. Consult a vet list of toxic and nontoxic species.
CharlieB
Thank you, I already asked them about untreated wood, unfortunately, they're not on the safe wood list
Ronald Byrd
They do sell wood dowels at home depot. They are made out of Poplar which is safe. Pirches: Cut them about 1/2" too long then put a 1/4" slot on each side so that they go all the way across the cage and the bars fit in the slots. Toys: Get a smaller dowels and cut it to make short sections and dye them with food coloring. Drill holes and string them together on a cotton shoe lace. You can get round and square. CharlieB
Thank you "Ronakl Byrd" yes, I saw poplar at home depot. I'm wondering if you know for sure that they are untreated?
Mama CJ
We use untreated pine 2 x 4's to make blocks for toys and perches from lumber companies....
Doug
"Treated" wood is clearly marked as such. It is intended for exposure to the elements and is definitely not bird-safe. Treated lumber has a green tint. The project wood (solid wood boards and dowels) should be fine. I've used pine pieces to make toys. Just ask for the untreated wood. I'd avoid plywood for exposed areas since the glue is unknown (but probably not a serious concern, but...)
