First Time Beak Trim

Hello Everyone,

I'm taking Sydney Peaches next week for her very first beak trim. She had a minor beak injury about 2 months ago and I have been waiting until things have completely healed before taking her for her trim. I'm nervous. Can anyone tell me what I can expect and how short is too short? Also, is it painful for them? Should the tip stay pointed or do should they make it flat or beveled? Any tid bits of information would be great! Thank you!!

You needn't be nervousYou should explain the past injury and the bird will be examined. If there's a problem the vet will recommend what has to be done.

How short is too short? All parrots have different sized beaks. That includes the same species. It has to do with how much the bird files it's own beak. It's not painful to the bird as long as it's done properly. Owners also file beaks down but they're experienced at doing it. As far as pointed, flat or beveled, The vet is the one that files down the beak to it's proper size and usually, the owner has nothing to say as far as choosing a style.

As long as it is done by your avian vet he should do fine, I wouldn't allow anyone but my vet to do that for any of my birds.

If the beak is in good shape and not over grown then a trim might not be required.
