Cocoa lost and found

The tears that were welling up finally pored as soon as Cocoa said "Hello Gorgeous" I am soooo glad this has a happy ending.

I had a similar experience last fall, Rorschach got out for a fly... we searched for hours and asked everyone in the area where he was seen to touch down to call our phones if they see him. I was in back yards calling and tracking through thick wooded areas, it was insane. After a few hours I started to really get stressed and just wanted to scream and cry. I didn't want to give up. About hour 6 I finally went to my mom and stepdad who lived near where Rorschach went down, they were going to get on the bike and ride around the cliffs (we live near the ocean I was afraid he flew into the ocean) As my parents were getting ready me, the bf and his dad were pulling out of the driveway to do another drive around when a man in a truck pulled up. He knew Art (bf's dad) and asked what we were doing, we told he we were looking for our bird and he asked if it was an African Grey... then said he had it at his place. I didn't believe him until I was reunited with my baby. When we got the guys place I was really angry because I was searching his back yard while they were there, they never said anything to me. He actually said he didn't have any intentions on giving the bird back. If it wasn't for the mans fear of my bf's mom (she's got a rep) we would have never gotten him back. I had to still be grateful that he found him and Rorschach gave him a nasty bite so that makes up for his thinking of keeping him. The man caught him in his back yard which was where David saw him go down, he placed him in this cage thing he had for his chickens. When David went to get him Rorschach didn't want him, so I told him to move so I can get him. I didn't have my hand in fully and Rorschach was reaching to come to me. We were very lucky that day and we will not take that chance again.

What a story but so glad it had a happy ending, we have had quite a few take flight lately, one has not been found so far but I had tears in my eyes reading your story, now you know why we stress so much that even a clipped bird can fly away if given the right circumstances. Don't be so quick to clip the wings for if by chance she escapes again a flighted bird stands a much better chance of surviving and being found if they are capable of flight. There are precautions you can take to keep her safe while being flighted so please read some of the threads in the training room for ideas and suggestions.

I agree, they are our children and it should be illegal to steal someones pet... I think the man felt a little guilty when he seen Rorschach with me though, he could then see the bond someone would have with them and I was trying to explain about how close one would get to them.

Rorschach isn't clipped but the vet had said he shouldn't be able to fly up because of his spine... the vet here is not an avian vet only has a bit of knowledge. It's really far to get to an avian vet from where I am, It would be a days drive and I would have to stay over night so i can't get a proper opinion unless i have the time off work and school and the extra cash for travel. Rorschach has NO problem flying and he is getting better and better every day. As soon as I can I will be ordering a harness online.

When we lost Rorschach for those few hours I had a lot of mixed emotions and he had only come live with us about a month prior. If it happened now after bonding even more I really don't know what I would do. I feel so horrible that you had to go through this but I am so happy you were both reunited.

Thank you for all the responses. I was very concerned about Cocoa suffering a similar fate to Rorschach, so glad to hear you got him back. In our neighbourhood we have a 'settlement' of sorts very close by and when we still had the finch aviary, guys from the settlement would often come to our gate offering my husband wild caught birds and some I was sure were stolen. It drives me insane !!! And I just knew that I had no time to waste in getting the word out there quickly.

Finding my Cocoa, that was meant to be, the lady who was smiling and laughing from her window told me after the time had I arrived there 20 minutes later the owners of the house would have left for work that Saturday morning and the fierce dog would have had access to the entire garden, what I didn't know at the time was the part of the garden Cocoa was in, the dog had no access to - crazy crazy crazy. She has been home now longer than she was gone and I still find myself looking at her with disbelief ' you are really home'

Judy I hear what you're saying about her having a better chance when she is able to fly. I really do believe that it is for the best that I clip her wings, my husband, bless him but he is very absent minded and it was he who left the door open and his taking his rugsack off his back right by her that spooked her. It's happened before but fortunately the door was closed. And then I have two young boys who rage about the house.

I want to move her cage too, so that it's further away from the door however I feel I can't do this just yet as I don't want to unsettle her too much since she has only just returned, I'm going to place a perch in the new area and in a few weeks when she is more settled I will introduce her to the new area.

Talking about stress and unsettling her I'd like to take her to the avian vet this week, I'm just worried it may stress her too much after the ordeal she had out there - any advice on this one, should I rather wait a while

My question is would she stress out by going to the vet or from having to be inside a carrier to take her to the vet? If she has ridden in a travel carrier and didn't have to be forced into it then I would say go ahead and take her but if it will be a fight to get her there then wait a while. Has she been to the vet before and if so did she stress out from the ordeal?
