fidsandfrats
Slater has this chirp he makes when he is trying to get my attention or he wants to go somewhere and can't (he's flighted but still thinks he can't fly) or when he is nervous. It's a single sharp chirp that is most nerve-wracking to me. If the chirping alone doesn't get him what he wants he starts flapping his wings in addition to the chirp. He's been doing more of this type of stuff lately. Yesterday morning I was making him breakfast. He seemed fine. I need to post pictures of him hanging upside down on his stand like a nut just before I served him his breakfast. I prepared him some oatmeal with some blue berries and some fresh veggies. I placed the dish on his stand and OMG he flew off and around the house like a bat out of hell. I think it was because I put the oatmeal in his dish and I don't normally do this. Everything else he is used to seeing in his dish. Now he is hesitant about going to that side of the stand. He's always made this chirp and I have been trying to ignore it. Seems like he has been overly nervous lately. I feel that whatever I do does not make him happy and I don't know what to do next. I am almost at my wits end with his chirp. I can handle the sometimes ear-piercing screetches, the continuous whistles, honks, gutteral sounds and various other noises from the both birds going at it all day long that doesn't bother me but this one chirp from Slater is most irritating. So could this be a hormonal thing and will it pass?
Mama CJ
How old is he? Both of my CAGs have that awful ear piercing, attention getting sharp chirp. If it goes on too long I try to give them something else to do. Sometimes I turn on the radio or move the cage. Hope it passes for you and your sanity! haha
fidsandfrats
Hi Slater will be 2 in May. Ok at least someone knows what I'm talking about and I'm not crazy. I try to ignore his chirp and wait for quiet times to address him. Sometimes it's really really hard as you probably know. Maybe someone can help. judygram
I have to ask what kind of reaction does he get when he makes the chirp sound? Whether its an annoyance or whatever reaction he is getting from you could be serving to make him continue the behavior for you know how they like drama, even negative reactions are attention getters so the best advice is to ignore it. As far as the bowl, you know they don't like any kind of change and a different bowl can be very unnerving for them so no wonder he stayed away, he was afraid that foreign object was going to swallow him up, you would be surprised what can upset the apple cart when the slightest change is observed by them and they don't miss much. Hi I try not to react except that this has been going on for some time and I'm sure the behavior is inbetted. I've instructed my family to ignore him when he starts. We'll comment to one another like OMG he's driving me crazy but not to him directly. I was using his same food bowl I put the oatmeal in his bowl instead of letting him eat from the soon. judygram
Ignoring it is about the only thing you can do for any kind of reaction even looking in his direction will only encourage him and he may be reacting to your commenting to one another so you may have to be more subtle about it.
