Our first grey

Recommended Posts

Hi there! We just got Quinton about 4 days ago, and he is so different from our other birds, he is a bit shy still but will step up if he flys away from his cage. He is a sweetie but seems to want to nip a bit. This is his first family, he lived with the breeder until now, and he is almost a year old. I just got him a new toy and he LOVES it! He is extremely smart so far, cant wait to get to know him.

Hello Quinton and welcome to our family, yes greys are very different from other birds as you have found out.

They tend to be quieter than other birds, they take to new things slowly and can get stressed out more easily than other birds but they are an awesome bird as you will find out.

They can be nippy at times but I think right now he is testing the waters so to speak to see what he can get away with but with proper training you can nip that in the bud but any bird will bite from time to time.

He should have several toys in his cage at all times and extras you can rotate out on a regular basis to keep him busy and occupied because it keeps them out of trouble that way.

You have to realize this is just the beginning as you have only had him for 4 days and it takes time to build a relationship with a grey, their trust has to be earned and it can take some time especially with a bird somewhat older than a just weaned baby although Quinton is still a baby at 1 year of age.

You will find lots of useful information in our many threads so do read thru them and ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can.

Now all we need is some pictures of Quinton as we love to admire each other's birds.

;) I love him so much already. The cage is is in now is too small for a grey but it is the one he came in and I dont want to force him out of it now, but he needs a larger one once he settles in more.

Quiet? LOL, Quiet???? :D I havent seen too much of quiet since he has been here, he is more vocal than my Quaker parrot!! I LOVE is sounds he makes, and he talks in 2 different voices back and forth it is so funny. He is quiet at night, but other than that unless he is napping he talks or buzzes 24/7. Its super funny!

LOL, as a general rule they are one of the quieter parrots but there are always exceptions to the rule, enjoy his vocalizations.

Yes right now he is ok in his present cage but you should upgrade him to a larger one after he settles in and feels comfortable, they do need room to open up their wings and flap without touching the sides of the cage, we all feel the bigger the better if you have the room and can afford it.

Welcome to you & Quinton!

When it is time to get a new cage, I do recommend having both cages in the same room & letting him get used to the new cage over time. He may taken to it immediately, or may be a bit weird about it at first :) He'll let you know!
