yes a vet is the only option here, as tari says it's a specialised thing so only an avian vet will do. please let us know what happens

If you can't get to madrid to an Avian vet then you have to find a local vet with a little knowledge.Tell them this is an emergency,If there is something stuck in the crop in needs to be removed urgently ,before it passes into the stomach. If it it affecting his breathing as you say it needs to be dealt with immediately .

I would not go to any vet but a avian vet. Make the drive. Cause it may have to be surgically removed and you don't want anyone but an avian vet to do it.

The weird thing he is doing with is neck is him tring to get something to come up. Depending on what it is he could really hurt himself and cause internal bleeding.

Post edited by: Tari, at: 2007/08/23 20:26

Greylover,

The procedure a vet will perform if something is truly stuck or his crop is impacted. Will be to disinfect the skin, slit through skin with scalpel, pull skin aside and slit through crop, clean out the crop and stitch it up.

Then you must isolate bird and keep wound clean until it heals.

Please keep us posted. :-)

Please let us know how your baby turns out!!

The crop is the place into which food goes in a bird before it goes into the tummy. It is directly below the beak sort of on the top of the belly. If it were plum full ready to explode on a Congo African Grey it'd be just a bit smaller than a golf ball.

Here is the Wikipedia definition:

In a bird's digestive system, the crop is an expanded, muscular pouch near the gullet or throat. It is a part of the digestive tract, essentially an enlarged part of the esophagus. As with most other organisms that have a crop, the crop is used to temporarily store food. Not all birds have a crop. In adult doves and pigeons, the crop can produce crop milk to feed newly hatched birds.[4]

yes you should still visit a vet, he could have passed whatever it was to his stomach and it could be dangerous. you can't take any chances
