Ferrets an Greys...

So I'm moving in sometime likely soon with my friend. I've got Mirek and the 2 tiels. She loves ferrets and wants to get one badly. She knows however that I have the birds first.

To my knowledge ferrets kill birds without a second thought... is this true? Anyone have birds and ferrets in the same home?

I had a ferret and a bird together. Yes ferrets will go after the bird. They are sneaky like a cat. However they cant pounce or jump high or go fast like a cat. Ferrets are pretty cool too. A ferret also goes into a cage unlike a cat that is free to roam all the time. In fact I had a ferret, bird, cat, dog/ collie in one small apt. They got along. I feel as long as there is supervision you will be fine.

Just keep the ferret in his cage and only take him out in rooms with no bird cages. Cause they well kill them if they can get to them. Like have her keep the ferret in her room only. And maybe you keep your birds in your room with the door closed at all times.

Same goes for the birds never take them out with the ferret lose.

As far as not jumping like cats I have seen some that jump just as much and almost as high.

i have to say i think there would be a lot of risk involved. it would mean keeping your animals in your rooms and drawing up a schedule of when you get to have them out so that their paths do not cross. i think the only way to do it is to make sure that the ferret never see's the birds or their cages. i don't think it is worth taking the risk that they will get on

Having the bird w/ the ferret is like having the bird w/ other pets. Supervise at all times. I had two ferrets different times. None of them jumped like a cat very high or even tried to attack the bird. Not saying they were not looking at the bird like they wanted it for lunch, of course they did. Ferrets act in diffeent ways. Just because Taris or who evers may done it or jumped high doesnt mean all do. Just supervise if you feel more safe the suggestion of placing it in another room where the ferret isnt or do time share you have yours out for awhile and your room mate has theirs out.Take turns.

You have many points of views here. If your room mate already had a ferret it would be one thing to advice you for safety of your birds. But since she/he does not maybe there is a different pet they would like?

Or maybe your room mate well fall in love with the birds and want one too?

So I would suggest waiting till the birds are comfortable and then talk about it again after they settle in.

Post edited by: Tari, at: 2007/08/22 18:39

Tari has a good point. Let your bird calm down first after the move. Maybe then your room mate will change their mind and like to buy a bird instead, infact even go w/ them to a pet shop and look at birds or while they are around go on some funny bird websites while they are around this helped my boyfriend be ok w/ the idea of a bird in the house especially one that will hopefully talk. show them the one on youtube, Marv Breaks It Down.
