tbird Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Just double checking that if it's ok to give Sunny Raw Almonds in Shell? I made a toy like out of them. Please advise thanks...
Jayd Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Yes, by all mean's, Dave just recently did a post showing how to snip the pointed end to allow a Grey a beak-hold on the nut, the Grey has to finish breaking the shell to get at it....
GoDiego Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 That's interesting to know Jayd as I have stayed clear of Almonds as I do know they are poisonous for quite a few different animals including dogs. Because of this I kind of assumed they were also poisonous for Parrots also.
Jayd Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Yes, bitter almonds are most dangerous to all animal's, in the USA, they don't sell bitter Almonds. Almond's 2-3 a day, 1/2 walnut,Pistachio's, are full of "EFA" Essential Fatty Acids" which a parrots diet fall short of...Almond butter on toast is a excellent source of protein for our fid's...Jayd http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww21eii.htm
GoDiego Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Thanks Jayd, after what you said I looked into it on the internet and yes only Bitter Almonds come up as toxic to parrots. Taking my new knowledge on about almonds, I baked Diego some special bread for him, which I added ground almonds.
Jayd Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 That sounds good, I'm going to try some........LOL Diego can crack a Almond whole, a Grey needs a starting place to get his beak on.....Jayd
chelseaB Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 I am surrounded by almond orchards & they are harvesting right now, I collect them for Biscotti (have to beat the dogs to them! ) he loves them & has no trouble opening them himself. There are hard shelled varieties & softer shelled varieties. He has no trouble opening either one. I do have to crack walnuts for him though. The dogs also crack them & then eat them but they usually come out the same way they went in! Lots of roughage. lol.
tbird Posted September 12, 2010 Author Posted September 12, 2010 Thanks Jayd Sunny is almost done with the toy like that I made him. He has a few more to crack before I make him another one. Thanks again...
