Why does my husband's African grey want to come on top of me?
tbird replied to tbird's topic in The GREY Lounge
I never ask him to step up or come on top of me, he just comes towards me if he is out of the cage and I happen to be standing in the same room. If I am sitting on the sofa he usually does not come to me. It is only when I am standing or near his cage. Here is where I usually duck b/c I don't trust him as I mentioned I have been bit by him already and I did not deserve that. I talk to him when he is in his cage softly which I know he listens and mimics me later on. That is about the only relationship I have with him. When my husband is home is usually when he is let out and that's when he does those things to me. My husband is almost always in the same room with me. I wear my hair down and once in while I have it in a pony tail. I have given him treats directly from my hand; for example, there are these particular peanuts I love to eat and he loves them too, so here is where he started coming to me and I would feed him the peanuts directly from my hands while talking to him, but when I don't have these peanuts he trys to come towards me and after getting bit I don't want him coming to me. I feel at this point he should really know us by now and be use to us so I don't understanding why he would like to bite. I do feel at times that he is trying to overpower me or dominate me but I'm not even saying anything to him for him to do this to me. In other words, I have never been mean to this bird. I trying really hard to understand but I'm not appreciating this bird's behavior -
My husband has an African grey and to my knowledge greys only attach themselves to one owner. Quite frankly, I am a little afraid of the bird b/c he pecks alot, more like bites. I do talk to him alot gently while he is in the cage and when my husband is not around and he tends to mimic my voice at times. When my husband lets him out of the cage and I happen to be in the room, he usually tries to come on top of me. I feel at times he wants to attack me, so I usually duck (I already got hurt b/c of this and landed up in emergency...long story but really no big deal). I have stretched out my hand so he can come on me, but the last time I did that he bit my hand and made me bleed. So that is why I am ducking more now. I don't know what else to make of this bird. He either likes me or he doesn't and since he is not my bird, I don't really know how to live with him in peace. Can anyone offer any wisdom in how to deal with this situation? I am using my husband's account.Thanks.

Quick help for any one that has good training skills or just can help! Sunny he thinks I am going to hurt him. Lately I have been trying to get him out of the cage but he seems fearful. Once I get him out he perches on my hand then immediately he flies away from me like if I was going to hurt him and sometimes he gives me a warning. He also makes that scare scream like while he’s on my hand. I hope explained this issue in the matter that you understand. Thanks in advance….

POLL: Who clips or doesn't clip their birds wings?
tbird replied to kingsnake's topic in The GREY Lounge
I know this might sound Crazy but I would not clip Sunny's wings even after loosing him for four days (see the link below). My house is a bi-level and every time we are eating dinner as a family he flies upstairs lands on my shoulder and says "Want Some" I get a kick out of this all the time. Freedom is the way to go thats the way God created it to be for these CAGs... http://www.greyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?193984-The-Prodigal-Parrot-(Sunny) -
I Posted this story in the Rescue Room - But I thought it will be nice to share in this Forum as well. The Prodigal Parrot (Sunny) On Thursday morning 9/22/2011, I was cleaning out Sunny’s food bowl and I went out by my back yard to clean it. As I was entering back inside I slipped and fell down Sunny got startled and he flew outside. I called him but he did not respond and flew around the house three times landing on the roof top of my home. It seemed like he just wanted to leave and not come back. I called him several times but he did not respond but once again he looked at me and flew off that’s the last time I saw him at 8am. I told a few people this situation and that evening I went out with my family to post some flyers especially at the local pet stores. Since that day I was truly heart broken I lost something that I truly loved. God was showing me something in the mist of this situation. At that moment I had to let go and let God take care of this pain that I was having. I started to think of a saying “if you let go of something you Love and if it comes back that means that what you had is True Love”. Well everyday since the moment of the lost of Sunny I thought about him constantly and remembering the good moments I had with him. On Sunday 9/25/2011 at about 12 pm at work I get a phone call of an unknown number and I said to myself let me answer it because the call might be that someone found my Sunny. Sure enough the call was from a young lady saying that she believes she found my bird. This young lady’s name was Venus and she so happens to be an assistant to a Veterinarian clinic. What happened was that Sunny flew out of a tree onto a young man from a marching band during a festival in Woodbridge NJ. He was startled and Venus (the Angel of God) being that she handles birds like this told the young man not to panic and retrieved Sunny off his shoulder. The amazing thing is that she already had a kennel in the car. What chances are likely that to happen for anyone? The next day she went to the local Pet store and that’s where she saw the posting of Lost bird Sunny. She passed by my home and sure enough it was my African Grey (SUNNY). He was lost but now he is found. This story is just like that of the prodigal son that once was Lost but now is found. Do not lose Hope in any situation you are going through for God is always with you. Finally thought of a name for my little girl!!!
tbird replied to Tagtastic's topic in The GREY Lounge
What a great name and looking bird you have -
No he lets out a scream before me even peting him and it looks like he is afraid of me hurting him.
-
Recently when I pet Sunny he lets out a scream and at times it startles me because I think he would want to bite me and he thinks I am going to hurt him. His scream is annoying and irritating is there any solution to this behavior? I really do not understand this because he goes on my shoulder or other possitions of my body and allows me to scratch his head. (see photo)
-
Dan, Thanks so much for the input now I really have a better understanding of Sunny. Basically everything you mentioned is what I am experiencing.
-
Hey Dan have you experienced something like this?
-
I have a question has any body experience with their CAG mood swing? For example lately when I go to pick up Sunny from his cage he doesn’t want me to pick him up. Today he bit my finger and made it bleed he was really aggressive all his feathers fluffed out (danger). I left him alone for a while when I was stepping out of the room he started to whistle (call me) wanted attention. So I went back to the cage and he allowed me to pick him up just like if nothing ever happened this is bugging me out. As I am writing this he is on my shoulder. Does anyone have a suggestion? Do they sell mood swing pills? Thanks in advance….
