MrsBridenstine Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I was wondering if any of you play a CD, Radio or TV/movie while you are away to either A) keep your bird company or B) to improve vocabulary...and if so, what do you use and does it satisfy your birds or improve their vocab?
danmcq Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 The TV is left on a channel such as animal planet when we are gone. It provides background noise for them that helps the atmosphere of the home seem a little less empty. They learn nothing as far as words go though from it.
ecodweeb Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Boomerang or Cartoon Network. The downside is that the little girl has started making 70s cartoon noises that are most annoying. the more irate i seem the more often she does them
Lambert58 Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 We put the Sprout channel on when no one is home. Cleo has nearly mastered the theme to Mamma Mirable's Home Movies lol
Acappella Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I leave the tv on a digital music station. He seems to chatter more when there's background noice in the room.
Spinner Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 XM plays all the time for the birds. I used to do Animal Planet on the television until the animal cops show spooked the dog (or me).
RockysMum Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 My kids insist that we leave Spongebob Squarepants on for Rocky when we leave the house lol, He his now a master at singing "who lives in a pineapple under the sea"
Talon Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I put the tv on....Nick Jr. But twice a week, I put the Bird Sitter dvd in for them. I like them to learn the other bird sounds. B)
JillyBeanz Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I leave the radio on for Harvey - switching channels regularly - because I'm sure he's sick of Jordin Sparks as much as I am!!!!! Funnily enough he loves TV programmes when there's a lot going on and moving about - he seems to "watch" it - not sure if he's taking anything in though
Luvparrots Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I leave the tv on when I'm not home. But frankly it's probably more to make me feel better as my pets don't seem to notice.

Post edited by: luvparrots, at: 2010/01/15 03:11
Janfromboone Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I have a radio on a timer. It only comes on for a couple of hours.
Toni Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 When I leave I put the football channel on for Alcazar. He lovesssssss football. He says; Are You Ready For Footballlll, Hooray, Hooray, Throw it throw it. He gets sooo excited for it

Char Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I leave the tv on for Whisper on a cartoon channel. I have it on a timer so she can rest in the afternoon. I can't tell if she cares one way or another. She has a vocabulary of over 150 phrases but not one of them came from radio or tv or any thing like that. It is entirely things I say to her.
Summerc25 Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I leave shakazulu's tv on Disney or Nick Jr when I am not home. He makes a lot of crazy cartoon sounds but I don't think I have ever heard him say anything from the tv. Well with the exception of wiggles wiggles wiggles lol from that show the wiggles. He was on that big time for a while. He loved yelling wiggles wiggles wiggles!! I did notice when I tried the news one day to see if he would learn any words instead of cartoon sounds, he was not in a good mood that night so I changed back to cartoons. He seems to prefer them hehe
JillyBeanz Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 I've read threads about this before - and I am really interested as to why a load of people choose the children's channels for their fids? Do you put it on because we treat them like our human kids or is there another reason. I say this, because Harvey isn't next to the TV ~ so has a little radio tucked under his cage. I'd be really interested to know why you choose the children's channels xx

You don't have to worry about foul language.
JillyBeanz Posted January 15, 2010 Posted January 15, 2010 Thanks Charlene - I didn't take the language into account ~ here in the UK you can't even say "shoot" until after the watershed (9pm)! The colours and music are definitely a good idea though! See, simple things I don't think of!
pearllyn Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 danmcq wrote: The TV is left on a channel such as animal planet when we are gone. I don't let Alfie watch the animal planet in case she see's a parrot being eaten and has nightmares. And we do usually pick one of the music channels like magic or o music - so we don't have to worry about swearing!
rbpittman Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 My babies get Nick or the Cartoon channel when I'm gone to class with a timer so they have quiet time as well. Dixie hasn't picked anything up from the tv and Beau is the only one who can actually see it, but he pays it no mind. It makes me feel better if there is some noise on in the house for the all of my babies - birds and dogs.
