RdnkParamedic21 Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 So I went to visit my parents today and they said they had aquired a new cage at a garage sale and to take a look at it. Well, its an older cage but BIG (H-4', W-3', D-2') but here's my question, a couple of bars have a little surface rust starting and I am curious if I clean all that off is there any bird-friendly paint or sealant that can be put on so that doesn't happen anymore?? I want to use this cage at least for a year or so, that way I could save up for a very nice one.
judygram Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Thats a good question, Josh and I don't have an answer for you, I have a rust spot on my cage too and I have wondered the same thing. I'm sure others on this forum have encountered the same problem, maybe one of them will help us out. O my gosh, I can't believe I cannot answer a question posted, and I am supposed to be knowledegeable in greys.
RdnkParamedic21 Posted July 15, 2007 Author Posted July 15, 2007 YIPPY!!! I stumped Judy!! WOOHOO!! lol:P :P
RdnkParamedic21 Posted July 15, 2007 Author Posted July 15, 2007 Thats alright we will learn together then:)
judygram Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 A little humor is good for the soul, besides I love it. {Nature-00020085}
danmcq Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Hi Josh, Rust is Toxic to Birds, animals, humans etc if ingested. If the rust spot you are referring to is more of a rust stain bleeding through, rather tan an actual rusted piece of bare metal. You may be ok, but you should test it by tapping on it with a small hammer lightly to see if the outside coating caves in or breaks away. If it does, you should not use this cage. Your Parrot would pick at it and ingest it. Also, barring having the cage sandblasted and then re-powder coated again, there is no alternative. Any other paint product would be poison to your Parrot.
judygram Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Thanks Dan for the information, I did not know that, I may have to get another cage for Josey as a small area on the apron has a rust spot on it. Maybe I will check into getting that section replaced if I can, I have only had this cage for less than 1 year.
RdnkParamedic21 Posted July 15, 2007 Author Posted July 15, 2007 Thanks Dan, I actually had the thought of sandblasting it on the way home, but I will check it and if needed will simply purchase a new one. Thanks!
danmcq Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Your both welcome! :-) Josh - Just due the tap test first to see if it's really rotten under the apparent stain. If not, then your probably ok for a while as long as you keep it dry. But, if it's worse than that, getting it sandblasted and powder coated again would probably cost you the same as a new Cage. Judy - When you say Apron, do you mean the seed guard? If so, that's not an area your Grey could get to to pick at. But, for cosmetic purposes, you probably could order that part from the Cage manufacturer.
judygram Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Thanks Dan I did mean the seed guard, and I will check it out and see.
Talon Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Dan, Thank you for the great answer to that question. That's not one I have seen here before. You are very knowledgeable, and I thank you for sharing that with us! :cheer: :cheer:
danmcq Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Thanks Talon, I'm glad I could finally share something that actually was helpful to someone. Just wait until I'm 74 and had my Grey for 20 years. Then I should have some data and facts for people on the Topic of Greys :-) Right now, the only data I have is OUCH, don't let your Bird bite you when they think their very life is being threatened!! :woohoo:
Talon Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 Dan, you've had lots of great info to share with us. Please don't think otherwise. We enjoy you & your wife very much! So, keep posting!!! I expect you at 1000 very soon! :P
Toni Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 ok I had time to measure my bird cage today. I love it !!! It's huge ! Playtop, bars are thick. extra grid so bird cant come out when your cleaning it.I got it at my pet shop but found it on a website alot cheaper www.birdscomfort.com. I paid 469.00 for it.Its from a company named HQ its model 80040. Any how its overall height is 73" its 40" long. Diameter is 30" inside height is 48" I know Alcazar will be very happy in it. I can put lots of toys for him. Yeaaaaaa
Tari Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 You can sand it down so no rust is left and use a paint that is child approved. Then keep a really close eye on it till you can get a new cage. If the paint chips at all you'll have to redo it. Bird fairs IMO is the best way to get nice cages and most of the time cheaper then pet store or on line prices.
lovemyGreys Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Thats a nice size cage Toni, well done for getting a big cage Now you can start to arrange things in it, how exciting for you, i was in your position back in March so i share your excitment Perhaps post a picture on this link Toni http://www.greyforums.net/forums/african-grey/11611-post-pictures-of-your-cage.html#26955

Post edited by: lovemyGreys, at: 2007/08/24 20:01
