We travel with our birds everytime we go somewhere! In order for us to avoid the stress when we are not there and they are in a new place (the hotel) and a cage they arent in all the time (its not home, make sure you have toys in the travel cage too..) we place them in the bathroom with the lights off. This keeps them calm and lets them sleep. This is usally only for a few hours while we step out for dinner or do whatever we came into town for. They dont seem to mind at all because we always come back and they were sleeping anyways! Their normal route of night cuddles still occurs when we get back even if later than normal. They than sleep in their travel cages on the desk where they can see us and they go right to bed! This is the best advise I can give being we have taken our grey every weekend since we have gotten her somewhere new!

Its been a while! Freya is doing great! She is soo funny and I think she knows it! She loves shreeding tissues in the morning while I get ready for work and rolling it into balls. My bf goes what are all these balls in the tub?! Ummm.... Freya's toys? She squeaks when the cat meows.. I dont think she likes him. She has landed on the dog a time or two with an "ohhh" and the dog looking at her like umm whatcha doing?! She loves helping in the kitchen.. well not so much helping as trying to see whats for dinner. She has figured out that hanging upside down is the best thing in the world! And she will even swing her self forward on the top of their playpen to hang and swing back up! She is such a strong flyer even with clipped wings. We cant wait to see what she can do once they grow out. Ruru got hurt two weeks back and is finally recovering and acting more himself. We were a little worried we were going to have some bad damage. Him and Freya kinda made peace when this happen and he is finally letting her ask him for scratchs. Though he pecks at her once or twice and has had enough. They are making great progress! Ruru is going to be fine and back to his oldself in no time. Just hopefully minus the biting me part Freya has bitten my bf once and drew some blood. I tried to stop it but I was too late. I am much better at reading her moods and have to ask him to back off sometimes as she is quick. She gets very uppity with him. He calls her his "bad investment" as he is the one who has wanted a Grey forever! They can get along for the most part when I am not home but once mamas is home.... all bets are off and all she wants is me. We are working on it though and she has her moments but not as bad as we were a few weeks ago. So, we have had our ups and downs over the last month but things are steady. Freya is growing into her own and very confident, which is all we can ask for. She is healthy and happy as is Ruru. Oh our little dove named Pinky is also doing great and has been adopted by our dog Osiris (the only animal or person that can get close without her freaking out!). We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Great weekend! First the bf and I got to hang out with a couple of people that are into Falconry. We got to see two hawks (one a redtail... sooo pretty!!!!) hunt for squirel. Now i never thought I would see that up close but it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The beauty of these birds is amazing! My bf is looking into becoming an apprentice so we got to go. We traveled about three hours from home and we always take the birds with us. So Freya and Ruru from the car got to see the hawks and Ruru... i must say I have never seen him SO quiet! Freya and Ruru love our weekends away and their adventures. All weekend at the hotel Freya practiced her short flights and landings. We had many giggles at her expense, like hanging upside down from the curtain.. but hey she was happy she landed! She even managed to misjudge at one point and LAND ON Ruru's back! Who than screamed and went flying to my bf, while we tried not to laugh to hard! Of course she got ALL upset and screamed too.

Someday they will get along! They are still working it out.. which i expect for a while. Freya is still a baby and Ruru feels he can do what he wants in her home but she cant be in his so we have had a few tiffs! Okay.. that had me laughing about the chapstick!

The cement perch is a great idea! Right now we towel Freya and clip them when they get too sharp. Which she is fine with as the breeder use to towel her to get them use to it for vet visits ect. I have realized our breeder was amazing with the things she taught Freya (like she came pretty much already doing step up).

Something to look forward to! LOL...

Nancy... Yes, we are enjoying her and her learning. She is really good with step up unless of course she doesnt want to She lets you know. Yes, he is finally not going to place her on his shoulder and have her earn it. He was just so use to Ruru already having that right. I am glad all the hard work has paid off with Sophie. I am sure it will with Freya too. Freya has that 'I am Queen' pose! We laugh because we just know she is going to at some point boss the dogs around and tell them "no"... that day will be funny. Thats so cute about the toys! Our two are still working out who is in charge. They get along for the most part but i see the day coming when Freya wont let him come in her home anymore. Right now Ruru loves all her food and toys (even though the food is that same!) and sneaks in whenever we turn around. Kristal

I thought I would start a thread where I can share some antics So... last night we were all set for cuddle time my bf with Ruru and Freya with me... as normal. I decided to check the election results while we were laying there chatting and my phone lit up the room. Freya and Ruru start grumbling. Freya decides she had enough... so she wiggled away from her spot stood on my arm and proceeded to peek and squawk at the phone screen. Not only we were in stitches laughing so hard but come to find out Ruru was also atempting to wiggle away and he was growling and trying to attack my hand. Funny that they weren't mad at me but the phone! Lesson Learned: When cuddle time has commenced no checking the news on the phone that lights up the room

Aww! Sounds like great progress is being made!

They are fun to listen to while they are trying to talk. I am lucky and mine tries to in front of me! I think we get an almost hello and a good morning proceeded with lots of whistling Maybe I am just hopeful.. LOL

Thanks Katana... We get our time together in the morning and when i cook dinner she is all kinda of interested so I talk to her a lot. He is use to his bird that isnt as curious as Freya, who wants to know everything you are doing. I have been directing him to include her in what he is doing and explain it to her. He can handle her.. she steps up just doesnt like being loved on by him. I told him to back off a bit and go slower, he went at her like he does with his other bird and I think he invaded her space to quickly. Yes, I have now told him that he may just have a different relationship with her than I do.. example: I came home last night and she got all excited to see me.. singing, flapping her wings, cooing, flew into the kitchen when i went there... he goes wow she doesnt do that for me! I fully expect it to be me being rejected soon as Ramsey is getting a bunch of time off coming up soon. So, i am very compassionate because I see me being on the other end soon! We will do that when she gets really nasty give her a "time out." I understand the lavishing attention on someone.. his bird still attacks me when we get to lovey in front of him. Thanks for the experience you shared!

I have a question in regards to this matter. Our CAG nibbles me and its doesnt hurt its more of a hey whats this ear when she is on my shoulder... and a cooing when she does it... yet with my boyfriend she seems to get him hard sometimes. This morning she was all happy and singing with me - let my bf get her out of her cage to bring her in for our morning shower.. than when he came in to get ready for work he went to say good morning to her and had her step up and she snaped at him and got him and she was clearly upset. I tried to calm her and intervene which she than get me. He got kinda upset and put her away. I have come to the conclusion that she trusts me and she is still working on getting there with him. He has a quaker that is VERY attached to him and I think this maybe why she has kinda rejected him. Any advice on how to help build their bond so the bf isnt to jealous of her relationship with me and so he doesnt get discouraged? I dont want to skimp on my time with our CAG but dont want him upset either.

Ohhh... thats awesome!!!! I cant wait until ours starts talking.

Hi Everyone, My name is Kristal. Well, I moved in about a month and half ago with my boyfriend Ramsey and combined our dogs, my cat and his quaker. He has a Husky named Osiris and I have a great dane mix named Athena and my cat Jester. He has had his quaker Ruru for 8 years and has always wanted a Grey... I have never been around birds... well... i figured I would like a bird that actually LIKES me soooo we got our new baby Grey about three weeks ago. Her name is Freya. We are all adjusting to each other fine. Ruru finally doesnt attack me everytime he sees me.. LOL.. and is actually letting me pet him on his terms of course, which I am fine with. I think is is jealous of the attention Freya gets from me. Freya didnt take to me right away as I was unsure of myself and my boyfriend had WAY more expeince with birds and how to handle them. I was scare she would be fragile and really worried she would bond to only my boyfriend! Well... fast forward a few weeks and me getting over my fear and if she didnt like me so be it..... Freya cracks us up daily! For only being 4 months old she has a big personality and is really coming out on her own. She seems to have taken to me pretty well and loves to talk (trying anyways) and sing in the morning when i get ready (we listen to the radio and she loves it) and when I get home. She doesnt sing in front of my boyfriend the way she does with me- think its mostly because of Ruru and his relationship. I have taken an active roll in making sure she is included and told what I am doing no matter what the task is as I have read they love being talked to. She is doing much better at flying (her wings are clipped at the moment, we are going to let them grow out), there isnt as much flying full force into walls or missing her target ALL together! She is learning to turn and direct herself - its been fun to watch! We are both looking forward to seeing her grow and learn with us... I am so happy to have her in our lifes and cant wait to see the funny things she is sure to do in the future. I have been reading from the site for a couple of weeks and when we have a question i say: Let me check! and I run right here as someone has to have gone through what we are. So, thanks for all the great posts and looking forward sharing with you all! I will get a picture of Freya and Ruru in the next few days.
