So I have been looking around almost every day, considering diff types of parrots but I found a african grey close to my house online. My husband and I went today to meet him -his name is Chico. He was a doll! He is 1.5 yrs old, large cage and very very well trained. I was totally amazed how well behaved he was. He did not try to bite us at all when we tried to see how he would react to us when we got closer. We actually petted his head and beak! We are very excited and he is from the same breeder my other grey was from - small world. The owner is a friend of my daughters friend - again small world. She loves this bird you can see how close they are so I told her she could visit, email or call anything to help her get thru giving him up. She travels more and more for work and knows she needs to spend more time with Chico. She is bringing him to our house tomorrow to help with the transition. I am so excited like a little kid I cant wait until tomorrow. He talks, flys on demand and is potty trained, has never biten anyone she says. We saw him fly on demand, unbelievable. I guess I got lucky - we will see. I of course will let you know how it goes and as soon as I figure out how to get pictures from camera to here I will post pictures of him and of Fig my amazon. So, I was thinking that for the first week I would keep Chico in a different room than Fig. What do you all think or do you think it is ok to be in the same room? Ok, guess I just had to share with people who gets excited about parrots. Thanks!

pjbmom replied to I Tri Hard's topic in Classifieds Room
I am sorry you are going thru this. I saw your other post and see it is a hard decision for you. I rehomed a cockatoo before and regret it to this day but for many reasons I did which was about 10 yrs ago, I miss him alot. So please be sure this is what you want. I am actually looking for a grey as ours died almost 3yrs ago however I am in Central New York. Good luck to you as I know what you are going thru. -
Thank you everyone. Great advice. Taking my time, reading alot as I want to be sure I make the right decision. I pretty much love all the different breeds so it is a hard decision for me. As I have never had a baby it is exciting to think I could get a baby but then I think of the ones that need adopting. Thanks again

Hi everyone, I have posted about getting another parrot.I have a yellow nape amazon-Fig. I was contemplating on getting either another amazon, grey or electus. I friend of mine suggested a caique or quaker. So I started reading up on them and they both have a personality I think I would enjoy too. My husband thinks that I should not get another bird this small due to Fig being much larger. He is worried that the new smaller bird could fly over to Fig and Fig would hurt/kill it. Of course I would take all measures not to let this happen but he says "accidents " happen and we shouldn't take this chance. So, I ask all of you for your advice as I have been reading alot of post and all of you are so knowledgeable and give good advice I thought I would ask you. (It is a hard decision on which breed to get or if I should adopt again so I am taking my time. I saw a goffin which was a feather plucker that I have inquired about too - thought I could help save this bird.)Thanks.

Hi, Fig my yellow head amazon molts twice a year. He looses alot of smaller feathers, mainly his green ones but once in awhile his colored ones are on the floor too. His feathers on top of his head come in and they look funny like sharp pins but they are not sharp. While molting he is very loving. You can always tell, he will say yaaah yaay , walk on bottom of cage bobbing his head saying yaah yaah > I know he wants his head scratched. This is also when he is the friendlist and will play alot with me. Started about a month ago less feathers now so he must be almost done, he will molt again in spring.

Every morning, Fig likes to talk, sign to the radio while we are upstairs getting ready for work or for the day. One favorite saying is what are you doing? Today he said What the hell are you doing? My husband and I looked at each, and he said did you hear that, I said yeah he said What are you doing. So then Fig again says What the hell are you doing? Ok, we very rarely swear so it just amazes us that he puts these phrases together. He also rattles on, do you wanna go u upstairs? Probably cuz we always say, going upstairs to get ready for work. Then he starts his laughing... haha haha oh my god ha ha ha ha. Just like me. It is so funny he cracks me up everytime. What a way to start your day!

sassy, I am sorry you don't have power. That was quite a storm. I would see if anyone at your work or neighbors has anything you can use that is bigger. If not obvioiusly keep up the blankets and I agree, try not to stress as they will be able to sense this from you. I am in Central New York and we were expecting alot of wind and rain, thankfully we did not get hit hard like others. Good luck to you and hopefully everyone is safe in your area.

luvparrots - Fig doesnt really come down off his play stands or cage, maybe a few times a month that is all. He does come in and out when I let him which is always. I won't give up, I sit on floor in room and keep tryng. He walks down to bottom of cage and leans over but won't walk over to me. Maybe someday but I am content just the way he is. Also, when he is lovable he sticks his tongue out on the side of his mouth then I know for sure I can touch him, scratch his head and he says Yah Yah, then I know for sure he wants scratches. so funny.

My figaro -yellow head amazon I adopted from a friends daughter geez I think 6 years now. I was relucant as I had my african grey at the time and he was wonderful. Fig talks, sings, counts 1-5,5,4,3,2,1, when we got him. He doesnt want to be held at all. He lets me scratch his head and lets my daughters. Not my husband. He does not like him at all, always leaning forward to get him so we are always careful. He plays on our rope sometimes but mostly likes to just knock around his toys or rip paper. He does most of his singing, counting when the music is on and we are not in the same room with him. In the last 6 years he says hello everytime the phone or cell phone rings. He laughs just like me it is hysterical and coughs like my husband. He truly is great. Never ever screams. Very loud yells Tam, Tam,Tam until I come in the room to him. This is his first moms name and he thinks it is mine! He just loves his spray baths! Talks, laughs makes all kinds of noises. I constant am trying to do the step up command with him just has not worked. I can tell he wants to be with me but just has not happened yet. I truly enjoy Fig, he makes me laugh all the time. When he yells Tam,Tam,Tam continually I can block him out when I am doing things but noone else can so he is spoiled I break down and go get his stand and move him to the room we are in. Spoiled for sure. He loves all food, vegetables, bread, pizza, beans, just about everything. Ok, maybe I should get another instead of the grey! Truly he is amazing!

I agree. Many people just don't understand parrots at all. None of my friends understand until I have them interact with them. They are amazed when the see for themselves how smart and sensitive they are. They know me enough to know I love my parrots (all my pets for that matter... 2 dogs and 2 cats, 2 fish tanks) so they better be careful what they say cuz I am right there with "what you are talking about my kids!. Some laugh at me, but I don't care I love my animals!!! And no my house does not smell!!!LOL I get that question alot too!

pjbmom replied to pjbmom's topic in Off-Topic Discussions
thanks I will give them a call. Webster is not to far from me but other breeders are. How do I trust them.Instinct over the phone? -
Hi, yes that it so to funny you want an Amazon. I love my Fig. He only yells Tam,Tam when he wants you -this was his other mothers name not mine. Other than that he nevers yells or screams. I do want to tell you that they definitely have a fruity smell to them. When we first got him we could smell it right away, now only at times. I am so torn on a grey, amazon or eclectus. I research all the time and ready to buy/adopt if I could just decide.UGH. Good Luck if you get a Amazon, mine is a yellow head. Sings, counts, talks, laughs he is great!

Hi everyone, I am considering all options. I adopted my grey -figaro and he was wonderful but he came from a friends friend and I am taking my time finding another if I adopt. I do have a lady calling me who say 2,female and male. The put them together 6 mos to try to breed them, no eggs so she is selling them. She said before 6 mos ago she could hold them. My husband and I are relucant as we don't want breeders we want one to hold and love. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I am also considering another zon, as I love mind - his name is Figaro. I adopted him about 8 yrs ago from a a friend. He lets me scratch and play with him and hold him if he gets on the floor but does not step up on his own nor does she want to. He enjoys being out and just being on his stand. I want another that is allittle more attentive to us and want us to hold him. Still love Fig as he is a joy.

Hi everyone, I have an amazon now and had african grey who died 3 years ago. I am thinking of getting another. There are no local breeders that I can find to buy or to adopt. I was thinking of buying a baby from a breeder. This would be my first baby. I adopted my amazon-figaro is his name and adopted My grey. There are many many breeders you can find online. How do I trust them? There are so many. I would have to ship to me. Have any of you done this? There is a pet store here locally but won't have any until Sping and I am not sure I want one from them. I checked local shelters, websites so I thought I would buy from a breeder. Any advice from anyone. I love the Solomon Electus also. Love my Amazon Fig too but figured I have a Amazon,I should get something else. Any advice about shipping from breeders is appreciated. Thanks so much
