  1. I would agree with Dave, there is a lady in my neighborhood that has a scarlet that she takes for walks all the time even in the cooler weather.
  2. As far as cooking Stainless or cast iron work personally I prefer Stainless, the problem with teflon is when it gets overheated it can give toxic fumes and also if you use metal spatulas and spoons it will scrape off the coating so if you cook for your FID don't use teflon coated pans so as long as you don't over heat them, they are safe where you need to watch is baking dishes but if you FID is far enough away from the kitchen you should be OK too, smoke from cooking can also be hazardous I have had Fergie for 4 months and she is almost 3 yrs old and doesn't really show any interest in any foraging toys either Kino should be Ok just make sure you let him out when get home and once you start winding down give him some birdie time, another suggestion is to leave a radio or TV on. Beets boil them like a potato and peel them like one too slice and enjoy.
  3. I haven't been on here for a few weeks due to my wife being laid up with a broken leg, but anyway yesterday I was walking by her cage Fergie: What's up? What are you doing? Me: Not much you? Fergie: Nothing just standing here Took me a second then laughted my butt off!!
  4. I use a little dog carrier with a perch in it for Fergie, the Bird store I frequent suggested I stay away from the softsided ones as she could chew it up. Even though they sell them.
  5. Idk about the treat part but generally frozen is better than canned as canned tend to have a lot of sodium in it. I have heard some people use the low sodium canned veggies I just choose not to.
  6. Make sure know the difference between Konnie and wahini, the climate is great but I'm sure you know everything is expensive and you will grow to like spam if you already don't. Have fun!!!
  7. Also don't forget to consider temperature extremes a tent can get extemely hot quick, and keep her out of the direct sun as either one can over heat her as being in a cage offers little escape room, a rock and a piece of cardboard on top of the cage can give her a spot to cool off in if she is in her cage, and also beware of the smoke from the camp fire and what is put in in sometimes people put trash and plastic in the fire and that can be harmful to her, Lastly look out for other animals wild and domestic, raccoons and squirrels, as long as you stay on your toes to potential dangers you will have a great time.
  8. I agree as I posted earlier Fergie like shrimp and pork ramen noodle but not chicken they all are the same just different flavor, I only give a noodle or two not the pack
  9. Is it a liquid or a pill? Can the medicine be mixed with food or not?
  10. Steve, great link, its very interesting, one of the things I have learned is Turkey birds do prefer fresh over rotting, if given the choice they prefer fresh killed over rotting, who wouldn't right, but if food is scarce they will eat rotting meat, I see them all the time on the rails, I have always wondered if birds can smell or not too, as I have always found it hard to believe that birds couldn't smell, but Like in my previous post have always gone by what more educated people have told me.
  11. I never realized that birds get jealous and they do when I brought Fergie Home our tiel, Marcellus Wallis was very Jealous, Fergie she could care less, But I agree with the others let you husband find himself a bird, you never know maybe maybe he will come home with a grey.
  12. Acappella, I really admire the fact you did what you did, most people could have cared less, I am kinda callous to killing of animals as I work for the railroad and I hit wild animals daily at first it bothered me but there is nothing I can do, I on occasion hit a dog or a cat and that still bothers me, as that was someones pet and it will be missed, I can't stop the train just hafta keep on goin. Don't let it get you down you did more than most people would, and you did your best to do what's right, that's what counts.
  13. Hi and welcome to the forum!
  14. Hello, Christi and Drew Welcome to the Forum!!
  15. When I worked as a zookeeper our orninthologist?? sorry I don't know the spelling, said that the only species of bird that can smell are vultures, but he said all birds can taste, I thought taste and smell went hand in hand but what do I know. I do agree with the OP, this is what I have been told ducks and geese I think its all by repetition or conditioning, the reason why I say this when I used to go to the park for lunch I would watch the other people feeding the the ducks and geese they always parked in the same spot, when I parked there they came up to me begging for food, but if I parked in a different spot they left me alone Hummingbirds been told its by eyesight something in the sugar they can see in the UV spectrum Again this I what I have been told I do know Greys can taste as Fergie Likes some foods and not others, for example she likes pork and shrimp ramen noodles but not chicken
  16. I agree if it didn't feel right, better to wait, we looked at several greys before I found Fergie. I guess I am lucky Fergie and I connected after a few days .
  17. LOL my former father-in-law has a quaker, there was a death in the family so we had some family from out of town staying at their house, one of them was a VERY VERY devout Pentecostal Aunt, I had to sleep on the couch in the living room, as she would be deeply offended if I was sleeping in the same room as my Fiance, anyway the quaker was covered in the kitchen, I could hear him, wanting to be uncovered but the Aunt was busy making breakfast for the family, and I was laying there waiting till the others got up as that's what they instructed me to do, anyway the bird was getting ticked, she finally uncovered the bird and he said A-hole, she became so upset she left and went a hotel, wouldn't step foot back in the house as she claimed the bird "had the devil in him". she has been invited over numerous times but she always asks if the bird is still there and says no thanks this had been over 10 yrs ago.
  18. I totally agree with you I didn't want to scare her from traveling, yeah Union station is BAD, I am a Rough and Tough Railroader and I get nervous, my employer has put out a memo stating when we Deadhead on Amtrak, we have to have let them know we are coming and have either a RR police officer or Management be there waiting for us so we don't have to wait, due to all the riff-raff and you hit it on the head people in Chicago drive like total morons. and I am being nice, I have seen a few people with birds on the lakefront parks, but I personally wouldn't do it, I think she should find a park in Skokie.
  19. LOL I mentioned that I wanted to look at a handheld steamer while shopping last night and the wife informed me we had one in the closet and Low and behold we did I cleaned Fergies cage and WOW that thing works like a champ, cleaned everything right I highly suggest it!!!
  20. Yeah, our FIDs are waaaaayyy smarter than most people realize, I just hope it doesn't become a regular thing, LOL. I have heard the rumor bout the grey who told on the cheating spouse always wondered if it was true or just a wives tale, no pun intended,.
  21. Good question, either the previous owner which I would suspect, but it could be my two stepdaughters IDK, they have been fighting terribly in the last 3 weeks.
  22. Fergie never stops amazing me. This morning I got up at 9:30a let her out, talked to her, the usual good morning, and went in to make coffee, she had gone back into her cage to get a bit of food, the wife not knowing I just let her out, thinking she was out all night walks up closes the door, Fergie says B**ch, now I haven't cussed around her, so apparently someone has cussed around her, But its just amazing how she knew what word to say. I had to contain my laughter, so as not to make the wife more ticked off, but she really took it well.
  23. We have a shark steam mop the wife has already worn out two of them(in 8 yrs 7 on the first) they are awesome the nice thing about it is you pull the pad off and throw it in the wash. doesn't leave the floor damp just moist and really cleans the poop off the floor, I think I will invest in a handheld for the cage and its safe for the birds
