Luna gets so excited when she sees me come in the room with her bowl that she flies off the top of her cage but doesn't know where to go so usually crash lands into a wall or the bathroom. She's almost 6 months old and is clipped from store owner but those wings are coming in! She just learned how to mimic kissing noises and does it ALL day <3

Sorry if this is in the wrong place...I tried to post in "other birds" section but didn't know which subcategory. I am currently looking for more information and perhaps a breeder for the Greater Vasa parrot. Apparently these awesome birds are cousins to the African Greys, great speakers and extremely intelligent. They are quite rare but a spectacle to look upon. If anyone has any information or can point me in the right direction let me know!

Treasure your grey for its personality. Just because it doesn't necessarily "fit in" with the other greys does not mean it will make a bad pet. When I went to see my grey I visited the store about 4-5 days a week. Luna was very apprehensive of me for the longest time and she is an extremely independent bird. She is not cuddly in the least but I absolutely love her to death. The most amazing thing about greys is their intelligence. Treasure them for their amazing personalities and quirks and be ready to literally add an addition to your family. Even though at face value, this particular grey doesn't seem to want much to do with you, that will change, but in its own particular way. It is still way too young to assess anything particular. While that particular grey may be more independent and different it will not be any better or worse than another grey. Naturally these birds are very demanding and independent. He/she will have her own individual personality quirks that you will grow to love. Just give it the chance to do so

I love when they're face gets all fluffy...Sometimes I want to just grab Luna and cuddle her to death...its so hard not to haha

I highly suggest sprouting. It's easy and fun. The nutritional value from sprouts is ridiculously high and is such a fantastic part of my grey's diet. The seeds become very healthy and packed with vitamins and proteins and Luna loves to eat the little white sprouts. I highly recommend http://sproutpeople.org/ as they have all organic sprouts and mixes created just for birds. If you get into sprouting though make sure you purchase some grapefruit seed extract. Its a natural way to kill bacteria and completely harmless to birds. I rinse my sprouts with about 7-8 drops of this and it leaves the seeds smelling fresh and clean with no threat to bacteria that could harm the bird.

Just curious...I've had Luna about 3 weeks now and while she does chew on one particular small thing in her cage she will not really play or attempt to destroy anything else. Is this because she doesn't realize it's a toy or know how to play with it? Or could it just be her personality. She is generally more quiet and independent. She gets lots of out of cage time but generally prefers to just sit and watch things from the top of her cage rather than engage in activity. I was under the impression that the younglings would be more playful. It's no big deal..just making sure she's happy

Mulberries have a decent amount of calcium and a lot of vitamin C. I give at least 1 to Luna every day and she gobbles it up

I wouldn't worry to much about them wasting pellets. They eat what they want and try to make a mess Just keep a fresh supply available and I'm sure your grey will chomp down what he/she wants. On a side note...my vet who is quite reputable was telling me that Dr. Harrison created the "high potency" Harrisons foods specifically for African Grey's who tend to be a bit more deficient on things like vitamin A and calcium than other birds. He highly reccomended to me to get the high potency course instead of the regular adult course. To each his own of course, but I thought I'd share

Hi Brooke, I am in a similar scenario as you. Being also from SC and finishing college I spent months researching greys and talking to people on this forum before finally deciding to go ahead and purchase Luna. I too, do not have my whole life planned out yet and am sure there will be rough patches along the way and did now make my decision lightly. I've had Luna for almost 2 weeks now and between balancing classes, social life, and working is a real challenge. However, to me it is completely worth it. I've made a commitment that I plan to stick to and would not give Luna away for the world. I suggest you think long and hard before potentially jumping into this. It's certainly not impossible but it IS time consuming and a lot of work and effort. You have to truly WANT and have the ABILITY to own a grey and be ready to make sacrifices such as cutting down on travels/social life etc. Also, I highly suggest to think about it further when you get your own place and have space for a bigger cage. Jumping into this would not be a good idea. If you do have the time and truly want to own a grey, take your time before committing. A grey will be there for a lifetime so there is no rush!

Luna won't eat veggies, seed, or fruit. Granted, I've only had her about a week but she literally won't touch peanuts or any kind of seed or fruits or any type of veggy...she munches on carrots a bit. She is obsessed with eating Harrison's High Potency Pellets. Which is a good thing lol but..I'm now in the processof showing her how yummy foods are...taking time each day to eat veggies in front of her in the hopes she'll want to try it to.
-
Thanks Jayd! Yeah I made a mash today with a ton of dark leafy greens including kayle so will be giving her that
-
She eats Harrisons/Zupreem natural pellets and I'll give her some steamed carrots/beans and lotsa sprouts but nothing more than that except a grape or something here and there
-
okay if it's nothing to worry about then that's good...it's just that she does it when I talk to her or if she hears something in a higher voice her head does this convulsing movement
-
Really? It doesn't look like a boogie. It's looks involuntary sort of like spasms that she can't control
-
I noticed that when I play the piano or sing Luna begins twitching her head about and some of her wings too...when I stop, the twitching stops but for as long as I'm doing it she continues to twitch. What is this

Hey all, got another question. She doesn't want to eat out of bowl when she's inside cage. I made her some fresh carrots and sprouts this morning but she didn't touch any for a couple hours until I put her on top of cage and put bowl next to her at which point she chomped down. She was just making noise all morning long until she was on her cage top eating the food I had prepared hours earlier. Any thoughts?
-
Ah, I was just ignoring her since I thought responding would reinforce the behavior but I'll definitely start responding with my sound! Thanks

Thanks all...she is quite the chirper. She has been chipring all day long without stopping even once. First night was epic..she was asleep by 730 pm...I made the mistake of staying up till 2am watching Netflix. Little did I know about 545 AM wakeup. 4 cups of coffee and I'm still rearing to go! Breakfast consisted of peas, carrots, corn, green beans and a ton of sprouts. I think she eats a lot healthier than I do maybe I can learn something haha
-
I do a little earthquake when Luna nibbles on my fingers. I just got her today too and she sometimes chomps down. Just shake your hand a little so she has to catch her balance and she'll let go. Also, you can do positive reinforcment with small seed during stetup practice. This way she'll learn to associate your hand with positive things! Grats on your new baby
-
Yup, so hard to take things slow haha...I have so many things to introduce her to such as her various play areas and shower perch but all in good time. Question though...she is holding 1 foot up sometimes when she gets sleepy. Is that normal or could the perch be to big or something?
-
Went up to the store today and was able to bring Luna home! She's now sitting in her big cage not moving much so I'm just hoping she'll find her water/food and that no begging occurs tonight. She's been good for a few days without any hand feeding so hopefully all goes well. 16 weeks old...put some newly sprouted seeds with some zupreem natural and harrisons high potency in her bowls to start.

Recently purchased http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=CE87C281-802D-F658-015D7C75B0499468&killnav=1 to make some delicious recipes i've read on here. Couldn't find any information on if it uses teflon or if it's bird safe...any ideas?

Not trying to hijack your thread candismalli but I too have been giving considerations for clipping. I'm taking my baby home in about 2 days and she has already been clipped by the store owned (I didn't know any better) I REALLY want to stay away from having her clipped but I am a bit worried. First and foremost I am renting property. I do not want to run into major issues if the bird starts destroying the wall or other parts of the house since this the property is not owned by me. 2nd, we have some pretty big clear windows, 3rd, I have LOTS of electrical wires (build computers as hobby) and it would be really difficult to cover each and every one of them. But, after reading posts from multiple people and learning consequences of clipping a grey I am really inclined to just let her wings grow and never have them clipped again. Is this advisable considering my living issues? Thanks for the post candi it's inspiring

YES!!!!! I've shown so many people Biscotti he's hilarious

Questions from a newbie & prospective grey owner
cheebamaster replied to Amit Gomes's topic in The GREY Lounge
Ah, I see what youre saying and completely agree. If he has the time after work it could probably work but it would be a lot to juggle if he has other commitments. My bad for misinterprating!
