So I slave and slave being the best servant I can be for these darn birds. I sprout, I steam veggies, I shred raw veggies and put it all together in a very appetizing way. Do I get this reaction out of them? NO! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ku20MA48E9HDlQpkaXTgFzKOJSZW1w3lq_w1u1JM1HY=w380-h674-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/YO4bkKEqLLW4NntVlNhwVlk2b99KDfATLCaYvQ8mObw=w380-h674-no Today was my birthday so Ixta, who every morning for the last month has whistled Happy Birthday, decided today of all days, she was done with that song. Not a peep, nothing! Hubby came home early and he swept, mopped went and got dinner to bbq for us and gave me the night off cooking for the flock and putting them to bed. Okay so I am picky about what they eat so I had to put their bowls together. Sprouts with parrot spice, some brown rice with steamed carrots. He delivered them. I walked by and first saw Ixta's face covered in food, I looked around and Marley was also covered in what looked like spaghetti noodles, Chacho to. Somehow when my back was turned he heated up Chicken tetrazzini for them. lol He said it was a day to celebrate so they needed something really yummy also, oh and the dogs too. lol I feel so unwanted. Bongo wouldn't kiss me tonight and Chacho bit me on the wrist. I just feel the love all around me. Just wait, tomorrow they will need me again and I may have to ignore them! At least, for now anyway, I have Kane. :-)

I have to admit i am more afraid of those little beaks than i am the big macaw beaks. 90% of the time you get a warning from a macaw, they don't just reach out and bite like those little ones do who carry around the big bird syndrome! Kane is at 491 this morning.

Look at those butt feathers! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gdDn8MAxAxgwaKusbwBNaaVN0CgoQAGDUxV605fFvio=w380-h674-no Here is a not so great picture but it showed his little buddy that he started off with. Look at that size difference! 4 weeks old now. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ibnp3LZOkHbs9mHouYdPXXobxBP4V_sZmFJKXMjTIFk=w380-h674-no I love my greys but somehow these macaws have wormed their way into my heart. Marley is just a goofy ham who I wouldn't trade for the world. She sticks her tongue out at me and stands up very tall, eyes pinning and then crouches very low and yells hello to me. She has that on a repeat cycle. MaryAnn, the mean one who hates women haha, steps up for me and runs up my arm and refuses to step off unless I have the almond ready. She is the last bird that I get out because sometimes I am stuck with her on me until dad gets home. (then I become chop liver)

448g this morning! This picture was yesterday, you can really get a look at his foot in this. It isn't as bad as some I have seen, Ray-Ray comes to mind. He didn't even have the nubbins of toes and he did just fine! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9AI7S-sLg9kGHf2JhQEYZYNknTuf2huhtaqGAo6Z2TY=w380-h674-no Now for the hard part. Time for him to start to socialize but still to young to be around the other birds, not sure how we are going to do this. lol He is getting a lot of tail length now to so his tub will be to small soon also. Pat wants to build him a playpen so he needs to start working on that soon!

391 and what a cute bottom!! This was taken yesterday morning, but look at the butt feathers, lol. This morning they were doubled in length. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DSxLIx3Brdnd6tTlgXbJ6UClGuFK3OH42UFi5DLy5mk=w380-h674-no at about 50cc every 5 hours. He tries so hard to do it himself but gets over excited and falls on his face every time. This picture I just love. I was vacuuming the floor and noticed Pat just looking in the nursery watching Kane so I had to get a picture to show him his soft side! I asked him if was ever going to try and feed Kane and he said no way. It isn't that he doesn't want to but he fears that something will happen and after all my sleepless with him, doesn't want to chance it! But he is a great back seat feeder. I get a lot of isn't that that to much or what is the temp, it needs to be at 106 or my favorite, I think your under his tongue, stop your under his tongue! lol I am not under his tongue, he just can't see but I get that every time! lol https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/kFFbDUiiubz8lZTemitugxdEBSII9g4bYNSICOWz08c=w380-h674-no

Holy cow, 362 this morning !

At 326 now (yesterday morning). Took to the syringe pretty good, found some 10cc's brand new at home so until the others get here they will do. That takes some practice to use. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dZjBH9x-GqjaFupQ7Z31St3U5KxAMuqzCv6uErujM00=w380-h674-no

Couldn't have said it better! Protective horn-dog! -
I think Kane already thinks my contact call sounds like a too scream! Lol 2 weeks i will be getting dna done! Fingers crossed he is a he. Othetwise i will be moving the s from the she to the end and calling Kanes gender a hes. Also found out today we should be off the pipettes and on to the syringes now. She laughed at me saying i must be tired of standing there feeding him so many pipettes (8-9) when if i used the syringe it would be 2- 35ccs. AND that if i am feeding at 11 or 12 pm, i can wait until 5 or 6am and sleep through the night! I should have asked her about that a week ago! Live and learn!

Made it to 299g yesterday, lol. Just wouldn't break 300 darn it. I am only getting up once a night now, this morning's feeding was at 3am. He is growing like a weed in size and unless it is because I see him all the time, his features are not changing much now. Before I could see little things with each feeding, he has however started the stop drop roll. It is cute but it means he is scared. I can't turn the big over head light on during the night because the light leaks out and wakes the Toos up so I have a lamp and I am sure it is casting shadows when I am in there moving around and he isn't sure what it is.

Happy belated Hatchday!

The ugly part comes when the feathers are coming in and sticking up all over! Cute but still icky. lol That was a great video.

Here is yesterdays picture, weighing 224. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dcVFtCflmYUfOxKigiWMrJisLtoA3MYCYLk_hJOg_ZY=w380-h674-no He is out of the brooder and in his larger tote. I come home from work now to feed him since it is now every 5 hours and my amazing hubby built him his own baby room this weekend. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/MZsYDy0UVCmqEy10EBCjFbLz69wr_u63crkoHM054xI=w380-h674-no It isn't finished but it is finished enough her could move in. The door was too heavy for the hinges I picked up so it has dropped a lot and we decided to wait until we could get steel ones that won't bend before finishing it out. So back to Kane, he is a changed bird today, the blue is coming in now on his cheeks and his feathers are really starting to show, not just fluff and black dots. Today he weighed 248, his picture hasn't uploaded yet so I will post it as soon as it does so you can see what a day did for him. (this is going to be really hard when I find out the sex ya know, he will always be a he in my head!)

That is just wonderful news!

Edible Arrangements = Yummmmm! As I was removing the fruit on the sticks, Bongo decided he needed to get his share while he could, stick and all. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/g2MR_PXqO6WHnMqlMG8nGVPLynBpt-4xSrBP6zWNMfo=w380-h674-no So today we start the build on the nursery, I found a perfect door on Craigslist, made an offer and they accepted it! Pat will be going to our friends house this morning to clean his cages and do some basic cleaning then go and pick it up along with some 2x4's for the walls. Since I am still feeding I can't be away that long, darn the luck, :-). Decided to make the room a bit bigger as a sick room after Kane gets to his cage. Or even a play room for Lily away from the two she hates. Sterling, let me know when you are ready for a cockatoo, she is a wonderful little girl who needs to be an only Too! She is yours, cage, toys and all. She is the one I can wrap in a towel and carry around like a baby, she loves getting under your neck and snuggling. She will even sit on your potatoes until they hatch if you let her! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ceDbtafwVcHcirRk-LZ2dwp5zwdn7SKTLPWi8fuKkeU=w380-h674-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/HQvKMn64HzumUb8_W44egq1OeaR43drq9ykMMdOJz5E=w380-h674-no

The first picture was taken July 28th. The second was taken August 6th. Wow, that has got to hurt growing that up that fast! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eCNKqLDUqqS-CRRA9GnczzStJplE6basXq826sITmeA=w380-h674-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/zaR1ri_ZsUwJuFK782a0IzpvW7CJUfS_t5JEhPDstjE=w380-h674-no 5am his weight was 189g. Dang, at 200g he gets to come out of the brooder, I fully expected him to be closer this morning. Although I am kinda glad also because we are not ready to set him up in his room yet and by that I mean, I am not sure where we will be putting him until he is cage ready. He will need privacy, warmth and room to grow and learn to fly. Umm, I am out of rooms, lol. We will be creating a temporary room for him in the cockatoo area I guess. Will start building tomorrow. This poor room has had walls built, removed, built again removed again and now put up again. We just can't seem to leave well enough alone. Good news is I have built so many walls that I can do it in my sleep now so I am pretty fast at it. lol Which is good because I am not getting to much sleep, lol.

Weighing in at 164 yesterday! This picture also shows his wing damage. The one propped on his friend, is what is left of his wing. Not to bad and if he lives up to the meaning of his name, he could just fly. Not a lot of toe left but enough that he will be able to get a little grip and perch. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pQ5UsKlpHVB-QghnuKEZ4appUblyoaoN6XCkHmaV6Tw=w380-h674-no Here is a pretty good one that shows his feathers coming in. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/b2VQVi1mb4vei04uO9PAMm3i4AnuItZIxfkdwRY1-A0=w380-h674-no I weighed him at 4am because, well I don't know why I was still asleep I guess, but he was at 178. Not sure how he is gaining so much if that feeding was any indication of my skills, he had more on his crop than in it! So yesterday, I had heated up his formula but by the time I got ready to feed ( yeah, we played too much) it wasn't hot enough so I asked Pat for a hand. I guess my getting up and down all night is causing him to not get enough sleep because he took the formula, the pipette and the thermometer and put it all in the microwave. Not once but twice, he checked the temperature and said it wasn't hot enough so he put it all back in. The second time is when the thermometer said okay, I gave you a chance but now you just being silly, I will start making popping sounds and you better take me out of here! LOL

I think we are 15 days old now, they are running into each other now and the only time I know anything for sure is during our morning weigh ins. Yesterday he topped 141g. By his second feeding today, his head took shape into a macaw and when you look at him you can actually see macaw now, not half baby rat/ plucked chicken. I had a little panic too until my head cleared and I had a big duh moment. His feet have started getting darker, when I first noticed my first thought was, oh my God, he is cold, nope, not cold okay then, he isn't getting good circulation. I sent a message to my friend and asked about it, I got a smiley face with a note, they are just darkening up, it is normal, macaws have black feet... Doh, I only have 7 macaws, didn't put that together. Pat and I would have been horrible parents, panic first is our motto! :-) I tried to take a picture a day but I get so wrapped up in him while he is out, I forget and hate bothering him to bring him out and take one. All his little feathers are really starting to show up now too. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/GI9XPo7KF7cMTTa2EL27pcEndiOjepDu9OfQROnC5Do=w380-h674-no This picture was from the 2nd, not sure if I had shared this one so sorry if it is a duplicate. I will take some this morning.

LOL, true to the wine, coffee, beer, etc. I came in to find Gabby with a beer can holding the it like a pro. (it was empty and didn't make it to the trash) Most of my guys like Harrisons, but mama can't afford it for this many birds, half of who like to throw their pellets around. Vincent will put it in his foot, hold his foot over his head as he puts his head under his wing and rolls the food down his back trying to catch from underneath, he never has either but keeps trying! I will sometimes use Hagens tropican, they do like that but it is not easy to find locally and by the time I get on line to order it, I need it and can't wait for delivery. I should plan better, I will make a plan to plan that!

75% of my guys diet is fresh food. They have pellets (Zupreem Veggie Blend and the fruit blend, sorry Sterling but my guys love the stuff, lol) Seed is very sparingly given but daily, maybe a tablespoon amount give or take. They love sprouts so they get that 2x's a day also. If all your bird has eaten is seed, it will take some time to break them of it but don't starve him trying to do it. Meaning don't stop giving seeds all together at once, cut back a little at a time. It can be done but will take time.
