  1. We brought our grey, Buckeye, home in November and he was 12 weeks old and totally weaned. He had been very socialized while he was at the store and we had no problem with him settling in. It did take him a few days to get used to the size of the cage but all went well. I took him out right away and he goes in a sleep cage at night. He is not allowed out to have run of the house as I have other pets and don't want to take the chance of him getting hurt...he does have his own room I let him out in but not unattended....he is now seven months old and talking up a storm....
  2. I totally agree with emlee about putting the dogs away...I have five and don't trust anyone for an instant....things can happen soooo fast even if it would not be mean spirited.....good luck
  3. Golden Chicken also...lol I remember when pepsi came in a carton of glass bottles and we would take them back to the store to get the deposit money back.....
  4. I live in Ohio and bought my CAG, Buckeye, from a local bird store that gets all there birds from breeders they have a long standing relationship with. Buckeye came in when he was five weeks old and I bought him that very day and they have been handfeeding him and he will come home with me when he is fully weaned. He is now 13 weeks old and I go and visit him three times a week for a couple hours. I have visited a lot of "bird stores" in our area and the one Buckeye is at is for sure the best, cleanest, most knowledgeable, friendliest one I have found.
  5. I don't know where you are located but I myself would not buy a bird I have not seen or interacted with. Call around to the different vets in your area and see if they know of any breeders. Do not buy from a bird fair, we just went to one in our area this past Sunday and it was my first experience and the birds were in mighty sad conditions. Filthy cages, large birds in too small cages. Not to say that all that go to these places keep their birds like this but it is very sad. If you can find a store that specializes in birds and has a good reputation that would be a good place also. Just check things out first very carefully and good luck in your search.
  6. I so agree with what brianlinkles says, as I am also very new to this species, really my first bigger bird, and was just curious....good luck with your new baby, I know I can't wait to get Buckeye home. Like you going to see him is the higlight of my week......
  7. Welcome Rubiamala, I am new also and will be bringing my baby home in the next few weeks, this is a great forum....enjoy!!!!
  8. $1200 for fully weaned baby and very socialized...worth every penny
  9. I agree with Dave007 as I think that is what we are wondering about and maybe you could tell us something we don't know. I had my baby sexed by a simple blood test and results we back in one week. It really didn't matter if it was a boy or girl we just wanted to know and it was just a simple matter of quicking the nail and sending in blood smear. Please don't be offended by our curiosity....
  10. I am not much help here as it was so easy for us to pick a name. Since we live in Ohio and greys are the same color as our Ohio State teams we named him Buckeye.....lol
  11. Merlin welcome to the forum and have fun with your search...getting the right breeder is so important, you are off to a great start. I am in the process of waiting for my baby to come home...it's just like being pregnant...let's get this over with...lol
  12. Hi Wingy and welcome.....I also wanted a parrot and went in to specialized pet store that does mainly birds to investigate a small parrot. I have always wanted a grey but wasn't sure about spending the bucks for one. Well needless to say I am well on my way to bringing my CAG home in a few weeks. He is not weaned yet so I am waiting for that. Greys are one of the smartest, with the largest talking ability of the birds and also one of the quietest. There are some very cute Quaker babies in the store also and they are very noisy. I wanted something a little quieter, not that greys can't get noisy also, but I am finding out it is all in how they are raised and then handled once they come home. Definitely get one from a breeder or store that specializes in birds and has a lot of experience with them. I get to go and visit with Buckeye three times a week and he is now 11 weeks old. I think that this week he started really reconizing me when I came in. Visit when you can and you will for sure bond when he gets home. Good Luck with your search, that in itself is fun......
  13. Hi everyone, I was visiting my baby ten week old gray, Buckeye, today at the bird store and meet the nicest man there that is a moderator for this forum and he told me about it. I am very excited and nervous to bring my new baby home when he is weaned. I am always looking for information so thanks in advance for any help I get here.
