  1. No idea what to call him, he was Christian in his previous home, I LOVE the name Joaquin but this morning when he climbed down off his cage & came strolling into the kitchen looking for me, I said 'What are ya doin' driftin' around unsupervised!" I know all Greys look alike, but I feel like this boy actually has his very own look... I tried to get a close up of his funny eye.. not sure if you'll be able to see it... 1st pic.. Movin' on up, to a delux apartment in the sky! "Hey watch it wit that thing, I've got wings & I KNOW how to use 'em!" "Don't u wish ur boyfriend had a beak like me!" Very blurry because he decided to start dancing at the moment the shutter clicked "No more flashy thing PLEASE!"
  2. I drink A LOT of this stuff, he seems to like it as much as I do... is this a safe treat for him?? Real Coconut Water Our coconut water is a product that varies from crop to crop because it is ALL NATURAL. We use the best young coconuts to give you the flavor you have come to love. Our young coconuts are truly tender and sometimes may yield water that contain fine traces of pulp that naturally tend to clump & jell. 3. I heeded none of the warnings and bought an "old bird." Yes all the babies were available and adorable and probably would've bonded to me... but I made the mistake of "just going to look" at an 8 year old male  He let me scritch his head and neck, then he bit me He was in a small cage (that he was sharing w/ anotherCAG), in a tiny room with one tiny window.. he seemed perfectly happy but somehow I thought "I could give him a better life." He was sold pretty cheap to me because he "can't talk & nobody wants a mute parrot." One the car ride home, he whistled a bit, did a few "boops" & "beeps." I stopped to get myself something to eat & drink and when I was sitting there taking the cap off my coconut water, he came up to the carrier door and looked very interested. I poured a bit of coconut water into the cap and opened the door.. he lapped it up like a little puppy:) But then I gasped, CAN THEY EVEN HAVE COCONUT WATER??? There are no coconuts in Africa! Then I stared at him waiting for him to start sputtering & stumbling like a dying Bugs Bunny.. but he just kept staring back at me like "take a picture you weirdo!" He also ate a cashew, some beans & spinach wrap from my burrito, some banana, some fruit roll up and the seeds his owner put in the carrier. We're home now... he's in his deluxe apartment.. he wants out of the cage... how long do I wait before letting him out? And does anyone know if having two different colored eyes means he's sick? His left eye is a normal pale grey/white but his other eye is orange/amber... I gotta find a vet asap. OH MY GOD! There's a Grey in my dining room and I think I love him!
  4. THANK YOU everyone for your responses, I'm really glad this place exists! I really don't want to fail as a "parront" and because I'm also a dog trainer I'm a little obsessive about getting results. I pride myself in being able to read canine body language and modify their behaviors to suit us "2 leggers," but I realize I'm going to have to come to grips with the facts... parrots can be very persnickity! And there is NO guarantee you are going to have a great relationship w/ your bird regardless of how hard you try. I'm just too much of a perfectionist/control freak.. I find myself without a FID but already obsessing over minute details of their care. Today I spent close to 30 minutes wondering what would be the best channel to leave the TV on when the bird will be home alone... Animal Planet? But I better check the guide and be sure there are no "Raptor programs" scheduled to be aired otherwise I'll come home to bird who is traumatized! How about a music channel? What if too much music gives him/her a headache? Do birds get headaches?! Am I NUTS or what!
  5. I just finished reading ALEX & ME & the only thing that won't stop flashing like a billboard in my head is when Pepperberg stated (several times) that to keep a Grey as an only bird, when you are going to leave it alone to go to work, is cruel and will lead to the poor thing having severe anxiety and anger issues. I've always wanted a parrot and the Greys have always been my favorite. I really thought I was in a place in my life now where I could properly care for one but maybe not. I do work 4 days a week from 9-5 in an animal hospital (steady job thankfully, been there 8 yrs now), there is not an avian vet there but I would be allowed to bring my pet with me one of those days each week. But this could potentially be too stressful for the bird as well, right? I wish there was a way to temperamnet test birds like we can wth dogs, then I might have a chance at selecting the bird who might best fit into my life. Boy did I put the cage before the bird, literally!
  6. Looks like it may not be meant to be.. The owner has kids & other parrots & said my home would be too lonely/quiet for her. Seems like a sincere & thoughtful concern but when I asked why she was selling the bird her response was.. "We really need the money & these are easier to sell than the Eclectus or Amazons." (other parrots in house) She also is selling to whoever gets there first and I couldnt get to her till tomorrow, someone is going to see the bird tonight. Sidenote ~ owner told me a story that this Grey got out during a snowstorm last year, they only got her back becase she froze & fell out of the tree she was perched in. They "defrosted" her over several hours and she obviously made it! Pretty tough lil bird!
  7. Good Mornin FLockers! I'm going to meet an adult Grey this weekend that is being re-homed. I'm told that she is "friendly w. no issues" and I'm certainly hoping that is the case. My questions are.. 1) Are there any rules or tips for this"bind date?" Any "How to impress & win the affection of an African Grey" stickys here?! 2) If she is completely ambivalent to me, is this a good or bad sign? 3) If she growls & snaps at me is this an automatic "not the bird for you?" 4) Could she pretend to like me and then pull a Sybil on me when brought home? Pretty sure the answer to this is YES! Any suggestions to how to properly introduce myself to a Grey on their turf would be grealy appreciated. Thank you!
  8. They look so proud of themselves!
  9. Does anyone have a bird from this breeder?
  10. I found this cage used but in excellent condition for a great price & close to home... Does anyone here have this cage & if so care to review it here? Is it too small, too tall for a Grey? http://birdcages4less.com/page/B/PROD/Large_Bird_Cages/PA5743 Thanks Flockers!
  11. I don't have a Grey yet, just want to try to be as prepared as possible! I guess I feel like I need to take a parenting class!
  12. I am considering doing a phone consult w/ someone who has studied parrots (primarily Greys) for quite a long time... for a by-the-hour fee she will go over any and all topics. I was wondering has anyone done this and found it helpful or I am just CUCKOO!
  13. Hello Fellow Flockers! Long time bird admirer, finally deciding to make it a reality! Been doing A LOT of research and have decided on either a CAG or a DYH Amazon. Still have many questions to which I get conflicting answers.. 1) Does the sex of the bird matter in relation to the sex of its primary caretaker? 2) Rescue or buy a baby? 3) If buying a baby, private breeder or pet store (having a very hard time finding breeders in my area) Looking forward to soaking up as much info here as possible, thanks!
