  1. Good way to put it. Thanks Dave.
  2. No, what I meant was that in the wild, if a parrot was born with this problem, it would obviously probably die due to not being able to find the proper food. For example, if a "pet" parrot was born colorblind, it would survive because we humans are doing the job of feeding it, caring for it, etc.
  3. Dave, I see your point and from what I've read about Grey's, I agree. But... could it be possible that this Grey is colorblind? Or any Grey for that matter. Very small percentage I'm sure, but when I think about it, sure parrots need that infrared vision that you speak of in the wild, and sure, any parrot born without it would most surely die in the wild, but our feathered friends that we keep are hand raised and therefore don't need this ability to search for food as we provide it all for them. I would think that there is the slight possibility that this could happen.
  4. My Grey is attached to me as well, and will not let anyone else pick her up. When we adopted Annie, she was a very picky eater as well. She still is, but I did a lot of reading on here and tried some of the techniques mentioned. The one that works for Annie and I is this: I eat said fruit or veggie, and make a big deal of it. I take a few more bites, again making a huge deal about how good it tastes. By the 3rd or 4th bite, she is so anxious to try it, and she does, and then realizes that she likes it. We have made good progress doing this. Maybe this will work with Betsy?
  5. Congrats! What a great story. Right when you think the worst, you found her and brought her back home. Heart warming! Glad to hear everything turned out ok.
  6. Thanks for the info. How should I introduce the two? I'm kind of weary of having one on the other's cage because I don't want one to get upset over that, but if I don't put them on the same playstand at least once together, how will I know if they will get along or not?
  7. So we have Annie our CAG, and just got a 5 month old Yellow Sided Green Cheeked Conure and I was just wondering how long I should wait until letting them on the same playstand together. Their cages are in the same room, about 5 feet from each other. I bring my CAG close to its cage just so she can see him, and she checks him out, but no reaction at all. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
  8. We adopted Annie 3 weeks ago, and she too was very much like you are describing. She will step up for me (the adult male in the family) but not for anyone else (she was owned by a male previously). As a matter of fact, she doesn't really care for anyone else at this time. Just as you were saying, Annie wouldn't touch any foods either besides carbs and her seed. Now that she sort of has my trust, if I eat something and make a big deal about it, she will at least try it now as well. Sometimes, she even goes as far as to pretend that she is eating it and then just chucks it. I think she is trying to make me happy. I have also noticed a regurgitation whenever I finish petting her. She likes to sit on my hand and likes me to scratch and pet. It did take a bit for all of this to happen (besides the scratching) but hang in there, Koko will come around. Time and patience is all that is needed. Everyday, I notice Annie advancing and her personality comes out more and more. I'm sure Koko will come around as well.
  9. Agreed. I tend to go with everything in moderation.

A tragedy indeed. My condolences to you and yours.
  11. Welcome Paige and Chipper. I too am new around here due to adopting a soon to be 9 year old female CAG (June 18th, woo hoo) and the reading I've been doing here is great. It's nice to hear you adopted him from the situation he was in. Although our family has only had the pleasure of having Annie for a very short time, (11 days thus far) she is coming around very nicely, and I am constantly noticing considerable advancement. I'm sure Chipper will show his real personality with time. That wall is slowing coming down, and you two will be good buddies in no time. Again, welcome, and we would love to see pics! -Javier-
  12. I purchased my cage from PetCo as well. Here is the one I purchased, and with a coupon code I found, it was going to be $225 with free shipping. I went to a local store, and they also had it there for $300, so I spoke to the manager to see if I could get a better deal, showed her that online it would be $225 and asked her to come down $50. She came down all the way to $225 so I took it home. Although I know others don't like cages from PetCo, I am very satisfied so far with it. It has the 3 no tip bowls inside so Annie can't pull them out, and 2 on the top. So far, so good. http://www.petco.com/product/114150/PETCO-Designer-Mink-Brown-Standing-Parrot-Cage.aspx?CoreCat=certona-_-ProductList_Bird_3-_-PETCO%20Designer%20Mink%20Brown%20Standing%20Parrot%20Cage-114150
  13. This is my first time reading this thread, and this is very fascinating to me. I can't wait to keep reading more updates to this continuing story. Thanks for posting!
  14. Thanks on the advice. Micro chipping sounds good. Do they have GPS chips?
  15. So I just adopted a 9 year old CAG, and she came with a hatching certificate with numbers, dates, DNA sex, etc. The problem is, that Annie is not banded. I know there is no 100% proof positive way of knowing that the certificate belongs to her, but why wouldn't she be banded?
  16. By the way, thank you very much!
  17. Her name is Annie. Here are a few of her pics when I attached a perch to the outside of her cage for her to relax on and have some room to stretch, until I can get down to Home Depot to buy parts to make her a DIY perch.
  18. Well, our family has been researching birds, (parrots in particular) and decided that we wanted an African Grey. The question was, do we get a baby, or do we adopt an older bird? We decided to adopt a 9 year old Grey, and brought her home last night. She is getting situated rather well, but takes better to men (me) than women (the wife). She let me pet/scratch her head from the very beginning, but would not "step up" for me at all last night or earlier today. We had a break through a bit ago and she is finally stepping up for me. She is quite the spoiled eater through, and so we will be working on that as time goes by. This forum seems to be a great place for info, and so you'll see me around from time to time. Thanks!
