Murphy has been doing some funny things over this past few weeks but being a new grey owner I'm not sure what it all means. I have a video here of some strange behaviour, it's funny the way he goes on but not sure what it means. It's quite random & so far he only does it on top of his cage, he just runs over to me & starts doing it for as long as I'll hang around & entertain it. Doesn't seem to be any pattern to it, not every day just the odd time, this time I happened to have the camcorder handy.

Well he hasn't actually regurgitated any food as yet, Kate normally walks away at that point. She has been telling him that she loves him so he must have been listening I'm glad he is bonding to her as I don't want him to just be my bird but a family bird. Kate is going back to work in a week after being off on maternity leave for 8 months so don't know what Murphy will think of that  I've just got her to read what you guys have said, she then went & got him out for a love & he pooped on her :)

Murphy is now 17 weeks old & doing great. He has been showing some different behaviour to my Fiancee Kate, one thing is every time he sees her he flies on top of her head much to her annoyance. Another thing we have noticed is when she pays him attention he starts to regurgitate his food for her, none of these things he does to me.

Made me laugh, she sound so sweet!

For some reason my post has repeated!

I never got the chance to meet Murphy while he was weaning as the breeder I chose was a four hour drive away, just had a weekly update with pictures. The day I went to pick him up at 12 weeks I walked in the room & he was sat on a table top stand lower than me. He fluffed up & gave me a sign he was unsure but after a few gentle words he stepped up & has never looked back. The breeder said " wow he took to you quick" So I guess that was the first sign of trust he showed me. He has now started to run over to me on top of his cage to give me kisses & even put his head in my mouth the other day to try & nibble my teeth  I would say he is getting more trusting as the days go on after all I could have bit his head off for all he knew so he must be very trusting.

I had an Amazon for 10 years, an orange winged but not much of a talker I'm afraid or singer, he was more of a hands on parrot. He used to hold his own spoon & eat off it that sort of thing. I Know that yellow napes etc are meant to be better talkers than orange winged & have seen some great singers on youtube, always got the impression that Amazons are the best singers & African greys are the best talkers.

I'm not too sure what Murphy's favorite toy is just yet (only had him 5 weeks). I bought him 10 new toys from ebay & he mainly plays with an old toy I had which is a hanging sign saying "caution attack bird" on the outside of his cage. I even put a key on the end of the chain to make it more interesting but he's only interested in the actual sign. I've seen him beating up a few toys on the odd occasion & attacking his bell, also some wooden ones are chewed but not much when I'm around.

Thanks guys for the nice comments, It wasn't too hard to do just some time & patience. I seem to be quite good at making things if I put my mind to it. luvparrots, the sauna wasn't to much work either although finding it was tough. Got it on ebay as second hand but it needed to be a log sauna & a certain size as it's in my garden & then a roof had to fitted. It was freezing cold here in Winter with temps down to -17c the one night & I was out in my sauna & then ran out for a quick roll in the snow.......lol

I'm still trying to figure out to have a larger pic in the post, do I have to use photobucket? -
I made this for Murphy just before we got him as I didn't like the look of the ones you could buy & couldn't afford a Java stand. I wanted it to be as natural as could be with some different places to perch. I have since added some toys for him & he is still learning to get about on it (he's only 16 weeks old). The base is an old Xmas tree stand with an old round top table as a kinda tray to catch the poops. I painted the tray in a washable emulsion that I used on my walls so I can wipe it clean, I also cover it with newspaper. The branch was from the sycamore tree just outside my garden gate. After I finished making it I washed/scrubbed it with a bleach solution, rinsed well & dried it in my sauna.

I have also bought a cage off ebay in the past & was very happy with it, I will be on there soon to get Murphy a new cage as he is in my old spare one at the moment ( I grew out of it....lol ). I also recently bought him 10 toys off ebay & they were great value & looked even better when they arrived.

what does everyone line their bird cages with?

I use newspaper too, have been stockpiling it for ages as I have all my parents old newspapers. -
I have pictures of Murphy while he was a couple of weeks old, the breeder would take photos every week & email them to me. I have also took vids & pics since. My Fiancee's parents got us a nice small HD Camcorder for Xmas so have been videoing all that I can of both Murphy & my baby Daughter.

I'm not expecting too much from the little guy, will be great though when I can teach him some words. My 6 month old Daughter Ella-Rose is also starting to baby babble so my house has two babies trying to speak. Soon they will both be chatting & I won't be able to shut them up.....lol

Just changed my avatar pic to a more recent one of Murphy, the day we bought him 10 new toys off ebay. We put them all on top of his cage & he wasted no time going up to investigate! -
We only had him a week & he was already mumbling away in his own little language.
-
Wow.......that's a lot of words! Clever little guy.

Thanks guys, were can I add photos? Are they easy enough to attach to posts? My avatar pic was when he was about 9 weeks old at the breeders house but I have some more recent ones that I'll share. -
Hi guys, Can't remember if I posted here or not, I know I added a photo to the other post in the grey lounge of what do you look like. Anyway I'm Paul head of my flock, there is Kate my Fiancee, our 6 month old baby daughter Ella-Rose, our German Shepherd Zeus, two cats Scratch & Binks & our newest member of the flock, Murphy our 16 week old baby CAG. Oh I nearly forgot the fish....lol Regards Paul

Very useful info indeed, glad I found it THANKS!!
-
Yes something like that for parrots would be great, would probably need a longer range considering how fast they can fly & cover distance.
-
Thanks for the info, I will keep trying as I love bringing him outside. We have had quite a few nice days for relaxing in the garden & feel guilty leaving him inside while I'm enjoying the sunshine so I always go get him.

We do exactly the same thing with Murphy when he's in a chatty mood "Hello" and "I love you". Another we say is alright & think he is trying to say it. Also while giving him tickles we say tickle etc so he learns.
