1. The DNA sex test results will be available this evening or during the weekend. Soon we will know if they are a Boy and a Girl, Two Boys or Two Girls let´s hope for the first, so that we don´t have to change their names The Web cam is still available: http://pfcarquejo.camstreams.com/
2. Blue Front Amazon have several colours . Our Amazon ("Amazona Aestiva xanthopteryx"), have the flollowing coulours on their wings: Green (of course), yellow, Dark Blue and Red. We are also having a behavioral problem with one of our Babies. As soon as I have the time I wil open a Thread here to discuss it ans get your opinion.
3. This was Lolita's cage, and now it's the amazon's. I guess we will have to get a bigger cage, since they are two. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brqq_nx2TWA
4. And now broadcasting online: http://pfcarquejo.camstreams.com/
5. Hi, We collected today some feathers from our “two stooges” and we are mailling them today to the UK for DNA Sexing. We wish they are a male and a female, but only God knows what they are…LOL!!!
6. Our ‘Bad temper’ Laptop technician! This is one of our young Sicalis Flaveola Brasiliensis , or Saffron Finch (it´s a male). You can see how it will look like as an adult if you search the web. This one is tamed, because it was hand raised since it was a little chick. We also have Serinus Canaria (Canary) and Serinus Mozambicus (Green singing Finch).
7. A site with many pictures and Species names: http://amazonaonline.com/TAS/modules/content/index.php?id=12
8. My Amazons, are Blue headed. However there are two sub-species that are Blue headed: Amazonas Aestiva Aestiva and Amazona Aestiva Xanthopteryx. Mine are the latest, the Xanthopteryx. The more obvious difference between the two species is in the colour of the shoulders, that in the Amazona A. Aestiva is red, and in the Amazona A. Xanthopteryx is yellow. They sometimes also have more yelow in the head and body.
9. Hello Everybody Our new Amazon parrots have arrived. We don’t really know for sure if they are a couple, since the Laboratories where the breeder send the samples suddenly closed, after waitind for almost 3 weeks (Have you ever hear of Exon Biotecnologia in Brazil?). The breeder was sending new samples to another laboratory, also in Brazil, but we didn’t wanted to wait another 3 weeks and we brought home this two babies. According to the breeder’s “feeling”, they are a couple….but Lolita’s breeder also said she was a male, and then she turned out to be a female..LOL! I am now in contact with a British Laboratorie, and I am sending them feather samples as soon as I get the collecting Kits. Here you have the first photos, taken last Monday, the day they arrived: Wish us luck! Best regards Paulo C.
10. Yes, it was very sad. Our living room is still very empty without her callings. Thank you for all your support. I will give you news about the 2 amazons ( 'Caco' and 'Lilica Repelica') as soon as I get them.
11. Hi, I haven´t been around here, since my Grey Parrot ”Caco”, which turned out to be a female and we renamed “Lolita”, died a few weeks ago. All happened very fast.......... we noticed She was a little quiet one morning and immediately toke her to the Vet to check on her. The vet examined her, and said she had to much bacteria in her “Papo” (sorry I don´t know what it is called in English, but is the place where the food stays in some birds before going to the stomach). The vet gave her some shots of antibiotics and other stuff, re-hidrated her, and prescribed oral medication for the treatment at home. He said since we went there very early in the process, she was going to be fine. The next morning she was still very quiet and she was hungry and thirsty, but she vomited everything we gave her, including the medication. So, we toke her again to the vet. He did more exams, and x-rays, Blood tests, etc., re-hidrated her again, and gave us the medication in shots, so we could continue the treatment at home in spite the vomiting. Unfortunately, she died late that day. The vet wanted to perform an autopsy , but we were so sad and hungry with all this, that all we wanted was to get all this behind our back and forget. We are still with the idea that the vet gave her to much anesthesia the second day we took her there. He said it will take 10 to 15 minutes to take the X-ray and collecting blood, and it took almost an hour. At the time he said it took to much time to put her to sleep, since she was very active. I must say that until then she was quiet, but still interactive with us. When we toke her home, after the second trip to the vet and the anesthesia, she just became “numb” in the cage floor and never got back on her feet again. We decided not to have any more parrots, but a few days after Lolita’s death the “emptiness” in our house made us decide to make a reservation for a couple of baby greys in a breeder. However, we went to the breeder aviary last Saturday and we fall in love with the colours and the friendly mood of the “amazona aestiva xanthopteryx”. So, we changed our mind and in 3 or 4 weeks we are going to get a couple of this species instead. Who knows, if one day we get back to the greys…..just now, we find it better to get different parrots, because a new grey will now seem as a ‘Lolita’ replacement, and that’s not fair.
12. We have a little apartment by the Sea and the last weekend ‘Caco’ went with us there for His first ‘hollydays’. We bought him a new cage, just to be at the apartment and be His ‘room’ when we stay there on hollydays . The film was made when he made His first contacts with the new cage : P.S.1. – The Cage behind me at the begining of the movi eis the one we use as the ‘Transport Cage”. P.S.2. – For the ones Who don´t remember, the his cage at home is the one that appeared at this movie:
13. Hi Dave, Thank you very much for you advise. If it isn’t to much to ask, could you please develop a little more the meaning of this sentence: “If you're getting a bird of the opposite sex and making that bird into a pet, neither bird should be allowed to mate with each other. Pet birds develop bonds with their owners and that's the way it should remain.” Why is that? Do you mean that if two Greys of the opposite sex bond with each other, they can no longer be pet birds? That was exactly what I wanted to know, because we intend to keep our birds as pets. I don´t mind if they bond with each other, as long as they will continue to be no-aggressive, and alow me to take them out of the cage and pet them. But if you are meaning by that, they will no longer alow me ti do this if they bond with each other, I have to reconsider the decision of buying a new bird. Just for your information, because I think this is important, our Caco is only 6 months old. Best regards Paulo C. P.S - African Greys live in "flocks", of many birds (many of them related). Do they reaaly don´t like other parrots of their own species?

Post edited by: pfcarquejo, at: 2010/04/07 13:46
14. Well…..here we go again. As I was afraid, at our house we never stop at ONE animal of a certain species. Call us ‘Soft’, but we don´t like to get out of the house in the mornings and leave our ‘Caco’ alone in his big cage. So….we are sexing “him”, to be sure if he is really a ‘boy’ (or a ‘girl’), and we are going to get him a companion. What I want to know is if the people here with more experience with more than one Grey, has some advice to give us to this new step of our relation with Greys. Thank you in advance Paulo C.
15. Hello People, Here´s a little film of our 5 month old African Grey “Caco”, doing a few indoor flights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi_dMVyXdPA Best regards Paulo C.
16. Where is the Top10 List?? I can't see it!
17. I’m afraid there is not too much action…LOL ! The web cam is only for the purpose ok keeping an eye on him, while I am at work (which I am now). Especially to See if he is feeding himself. He is more and more refusing to eat the “baby food”, but I can see he has the stomach (how do you call the place where birds keep the food?) with food he ate for himself.
18. The webcam is on-line for the moment. You can see it at http://pfcarquejo.camstreams.com/
19. Hi, As you know I am new here, and also new in the 'parrot world'. I would like to know your opinion about free flight our Parrots. We have a Club here where some parrot owners meet every saturday to let their parrots fly for free. Of course this means training. I you want to see some images of what I am talking about, you may go to http://clubedospapagaios.wordpress.com/voo-livre/ I am sorry it is in portuguese, but i think you can find the films.
20. Thank you for the warm welcome. I have pictures, I have films, and sometimes I have a live cam, to see Caco while I am at work You may see a short film at http://www.youtube.com/user/pfcarquejo#p/a/u/0/qHj7nbTXlaA The live Cam is off line righ now, because 'Caco is sleeping'. Tomorrow if the Cam is on, i will let you know Dave and Jill, Obrigado pelas boas vindas Post edited by: pfcarquejo, at: 2010/01/12 23:04

Post edited by: pfcarquejo, at: 2010/01/12 23:05
21. Hi All, My name is Paulo and I live in Portugal (Europe ). I have recently bought an African Grey Parrot, and he/she is 3,5 months old. I am still feeding him/her twice a day, but he/She is already managing very well on his/her own. As you can see, I stil don't know if we have a 'Boy' or a 'Girl', because we haven't made the DNA tests yet. Although we suspect "He" is a 'male'. We named Him 'Caco', but if it turns out to be a Female, we will change the name to 'Coca' I Hope I can learn a lot of things from all of your experience and knowledge, and eventually share my own. Best Regards Paulo C.
