Reading all you can is a great start... my first..and only...grey was about 2 or 3 when I got her... she was a rehome... I feel that as long as the parrot has not been severely abused or has become seriously narotic..you should be fine really... just give he/she time to get to know you and the new routine... :cheer:

We really do want to know how it went and which one came home with you....{Emotions-000200C1}

Hello and welcome to our Grey world...Rustina has owned me for 13 years now and she continues to amaze me with her cognitive abilities and her sensitivity to my emotions...so if I am in a total state of panic and anxiety...I know she is not going to co-operate and that I must take a serious chill pill if I want her to...there is much to learn from your Grey...it has only begun....{Feel-good-000200A2}

A real sweet baby..you've got a whole lot of years to share with him...:laugh: -
At one time...a few years back, she had a roomate by the name of Zena...Zena is a Blue Front Amazon...Rustina tortured that bird..but in her own way was fond of her. Circumstances changed so drastically that poor Zena was given up...she would let out horrible jungle sqwaucks...all day...and not let my boyfriend sleep...(he works graveyard)....something had to give...so Zena was sold..she now owns another woman and they get along famously...it was painful of course...now Rustina is an only bird..except for the finches ... she barely acknowlegdes them......but she 'did' keep something of little Zena......that ear piercing sqwauck....so when she REALLY wants your attention...oh yeh..you guessed it....AAAAAAUUUUUUUCKKKK!!!...Fortunately..for her..she doesn't do it during the time he's asleep...phew...Cause I'd have to move out.....

To take in a rescue is both rewarding and challanging but do not dispare .. a grey is a giant personality in a small feathered body.. slow is the key word here..Is your home a super busy place? Do you have a quiet room this Grey can stay in while he/she adjusts? what sort of issues? how old?

This one shows the red and the pattern it makes..like wings or something...wings on the wing..ah .. the red comes and goes as she molts. Or pulls her feathers...She's quirky

Hi thathamo...you have certainly been most wonderful to take your fathers parrot and care for her after his passing...did you ever watch them interact?..Greys don't much care for change but adjust nicely if there are some things that stay relatively consistant...changing cages is a big deal and I would suggest putting the cage in the room with her at a distance..moving it closer and closer over a couple of days...putting familiar objects in the new cage when it is close enough she can step onto it by herself.. putting her favorite food in the new cage only...and gradually...over the course of a week or so...changing all perches ect. to the new one and when she is actually spending the nights in it...out with the old...poof! Gone..as for the nails...take her in..it's going to be a while before she is cozy letting you file them down....if a stranger is doing it..she won't get miffed at you...:laugh:

I Didn't See That Coming (You Provide the Story)
likajetta replied to Quickdood's topic in The GREY Lounge
May I just say that when it comes to 'trim or not to trim' it is a decision based completely on the safety of the Grey in question..my semi-sweet girl is trimmed back every spring when her flights are fully in and she's discovered them to be..I always trim back three or four...give her a test flight and if need be..trim off one or two more but NEVER more than six..usually only five...once she is just smoothly gliding to the floor with no LIFT..that's good enough... -
Thankyou summerc...I don't know about having a whole lot of knowledge because just when I believe that I'm totally 'in the know' about what makes Rust tic...she throws me a curve ball and I'm scratching my head wondering 'now why didn't I see that coming?'...I firmly believe that she knows me much better than I know her..

Hello to all slaves of the GREY QUEENS out there...yes, I too am a slave to a very demanding and opinionated Grey by the name of Rustina...I had named her Rusty when I originally brought her home because I was told she, was a he, ..but after her first vet visit and had been sexed was informed I had a she, not a he, it became Rustina...anyhow...she has owned me for going into our thirteenth year together and I continue to learn new things about her all the time... she has certain character quirks...but don't we all...I plan to post lots of pictures and develope my profile as we go along into this new and always adventurous future...so from Rusters and myself....Happy New Year!
