  1. Good to meet you both and welcome! Do you have any background on Darwin? In the picture he looks like he might be molting or has had some plucking issues to work through. He has a lovely face and that is a very artful picture.
  2. Poor baby no fun to have a fracture and wear a big old clunky cast. This is when we find out how well they can take things in stride and keep moving forward. I loved seeing her asleep and so trusting , something good can come out of something bad after all.
  3. Found this review did not want to post it on your thread, what do you think about these concerns?

  4. Enjoy look forward to pics, having those rear wheels may come in handy as well.
  5. One of my friends bought a walker from a resale shop, wrapped the bars with vet wrap, hung toys from it. Extra benefit is that it folds up when not in use as her portable perch for any size birds.
  6. At home I use bowls at the Sanctuary many of the birds have water bottles we disinfect them frequently. The bigger birds Macaws and some times a Grey will get the brilliant idea of either pulling the tube out or shoving something up the tube so the water runs freely out onto the ground which kind of offsets having a water bottle, but fun for the bird. This activity is very frustrating when attempting to make certain they have plenty of water in the Summer, or you hear the water pouring out as soon as you turn your back. Many of them will also chew the rubber stopper if they can reach it then they leak slowly. No matter what you use safely cleaning and refilling is required.
  7. Good work Katana those guys need a little shove sometimes.
  8. A Triton is a huge step in a different direction but it is wonderful to have that friendly interaction and aceptance between Nyteri and hubby.
  9. So true in caring for these colorful Parrot versions of couch potato's.
  10. That "come here" command can turn into a nagging Grey, I have two that make the demand "Come here!" and they mean it. So funny when they turn the tables.
  11. You can do it! Poor Sophie I know she will appreciate the end of semester as much as you do.
  12. Darn daylight legnth is just right to trigger those cursed hormones, I live with two male Too's and the U2 can be a real handful. this time of year I let him spend so much more cage time than out time for every ones safety. giving him a good sized card board box and a pretend egg so he can sit in there and play with his foot toys gives us some quiet time. Early to bed for both Too's giving them a good 12 hrs night time helps. A tired Too is a grumpy Too.
  13. Some great responses here and should help Jasper feel more comfortable.
  14. Yes their appetite can vary with the seasons and molting, you may wish to add a little more protein to the diet during the molt. Keep an eye on intake and activity levels and remember Greys are sight feeders they eat what they are used to seeing.
  15. I find they enjoy many toys you can make at home. We have some threads that give you some good ideas since you know your bird best you can make things that will interest him. My flock loves to take apart paperback books, cardboard boxes, treats wrapped in coffee filters and paper bags are fun toys too. Float some cleaned cranberries or shreds of Kale in a shallow pan of water, wet fun!
  16. My birds often hang out on their cage tops with no issues. Some folks believe that the bird gets too aggressive when elevated (dominance issue), but in the wild the birds that remain up high while the others are ground feeding or roosting are the look outs who signal danger for the flock-not the aggressors. In my view that cage top issue is a not right assumption, aggression with Greys can be a form of communication(nothing else worked) or can be an expression of fear. Do remember that each bird is as different as you and I so what are issues in one home may not happen in mine or yours. The best I can offer is try to keep interactions positive, be consistent in what you allow, watch your bird and learn his body language to avoid problems rather than having to "fix" them.

    Traveling

It wasn't just the travel, but new location, new surroundings and you left while at the concert. that could be a bit disturbing as well. I think that CLB is correct with that observation and add a little new things stress to that as well. Perhaps a little chamomile tea in the water bowl or a favorite treat given only inside the cage to get her more familiar with good things happening there.
  18. Exciting wait to find out the Vet report today. You can ask the Vet to leave the toenails longer and tell them why.
  19. They have to test their environment and their limits, glass windows, mirrors and ceiling fans are a challenge to birds safety. Great advice above, mine have all gotten to tap on windows and mirrors to feel what they are, it helps. Ceiling fans off when the birds are loose to avoid injuries. Most likely not sad and trying to escape just wanting see what is out there ,touch it all and test those limits.
  20. We have a history of rescues here, our current dog keep jumping into the car when I went to pick up the kids from school. She stunk, no one admitted she was theirs so daughter gave her a good bath we all thought that would discourage her but all it did was confirm she was ours now. This one is not staying we will get his little bare backside a new home when healthy and neutered. Sophie in the bath http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa264/Firefly_mom/SophieBath.jpg
  21. Yes it is, Pookie came to us unflighted after 21 years with her first family who kept her clipped. That flying like a rock describes her perfectly. It took a while for her to gain those primary feathers and all she could do was flap furiously. We started taking her into the bedroom and gently launching her toward the bed from about 18 inches away gradually working the distance further as she gained strength. For the first few months of this "flight school" she could only fly downwards now she can fly and land precisely when ever and where ever she wishes. She has been with us for about 5 years now and it has taken the first two years to get this good a flying and landing improved after that. More caution with cooking, electric wires and open doors and windows is required. I do believe it gives them more confidence when they can fly and definitely more healthy exercise.
  22. Welcome to our Grey world. Do let him have time to adjust on his own schedule, the window sounds like a hit for his happy place. Wally is a fun name and he sounds like he is doing very well so far. It shouldn't be too long before he has those dogs coming to his call and running to the door for outside time, hopefully the new will wear off after a while as dogs can be a danger, even little dogs.
  23. Palm nuts resource, very nice lady. thecozynestbox@gmail.com Different viewpoints, different homes no one way is universal but I think Jay is right, disciplining with food not something I support in caring for birds. Bed time at our house varies with daylight length. Too's have to get their 10 hrs or more of beauty sleep or no one else is happy, the Greys don't seem to require quite as much sleep.
  24. That is a familiar story , ditto here. Right now we also have a little mangy dog in our upstairs bathroom, he climbed into the car while I locked the Sanctuary gate. Couldn't kick him out into the cold all naked, scabby & hungry. He looks like a toy size Chupacabra (google that if you don't know).
  25. That behavior can be called Heart Wings, kind of translates the behavior into our language.
