  1. Large & private, I would suggest talking to several breeders and rescue groups before breeding any parrots. There are many abandoned birds and those who have been confiscated to save them form some very bad situations if they are still alive. Are you still willing to breed birds knowing these things do happen once they have left your care. Do your research in depth.
  2. Natural unfiltered Sunlight is the best choice. If not able to provide such then do read this it may help, remeber the output on these expensive lights is not a peak for very long and need replacement more than you might think. Copy & paste to read. http://buffalobirdnerd.com/clients/8963/documents/UVB_Lighting_for_Companion_Birds_and_Reptiles.pdf http://www.holisticbird.org/pages/elighting.htm
  3. A voice of reason and a willing heart, good job!
  4. Try cooking some rice or couscous mixed with some lentils and beans do not add salt to the cooking process but you can add spices. Greys and most Parrots will enjoy a warm food and you can cut some fresh veggies very small and add to the mixture. No onions, Avacado or Garlic but any dark leafy greens, bright colorful peppers , carrots, beets, sweet potato and a little fruit like Mango, figs or Coconut shreds should be good.
  5. Amazons can be over the top when it comes to who they target. He may never change or it may get better as time goes by, hormones, possessiveness and what ever past experiences go into his personality.
  6. Plumeria or Frangipani (same plant ) is mildly toxic- Plumeria: This widespread plant is mildly poisonous, ingesting leaves or flowers can irritate the digestive tract. It's the sap that's irritating and can cause a rash. Any plant with a milky sap is not a good idea. There are dwarf Crape Myrtles available that will remain a small size. Roses are non toxic and the flowers are eatable, Nasturtiums also and they can climb the wire for shade. You might consider growing some veggies or grains where she can graze.
  7. Welcome, all the advice given above is excellent and it sounds like you have the right heart. While your patience gets a work out waiting for Peatree to make the first moves towards building a relationship you will gradually hear and see some of his history it can be enlightening. Will enjoy hearing the progress you and Peatree achieve moving forward in little Grey steps.
  8. it sounds like a molt but the itchy part may indicate a little dry skin or the new feathers emerging may be itchy. Giving more frequent baths or gentle soaking spraying should provide relief.
  9. Our Irish Wolfhound accidentally shut herself in our daughters bedroom while we were out. Came home to a mangled doorknob where she tried to let herself out a trashed bedroom and a well chewed and trampled Science Fair Project. She took the dirty chewed paw printed pieces in a got a 2 day reprieve.
  10. Vulture on the door and yes we also have carefully sculpted door jams and trim work, unique decor.
  11. Perhaps she has completed that on line engineering course?
  12. It sounds like he is trying to drive you away from the perceived threat-Pat. Weather for safety or personal reasons (claiming you) he wants you far away from your dear supportive hubby. I think Chacho/Albert is the possessive type. And yes=oww
  13. http://phys.org/news/2014-09-scientists-monk-parakeets-game.html The article is about outsmarting the Quakers nest building attempts to avoid exspensive repairs to the electricity distribution. I would think it would also prevent Quaker immolation. Clever idea and very simple so it is worth a read.
  14. Colour variability in Crimson Rosellas is linked to a virus Despite its name, the Crimson Rosella is perhaps Australia's most colour-variable bird and a cause of this striking and beautiful diversity seems to be a disease that's potentially deadly to many other parrots. Follow link in purple for the rest of the article.

    Parrot Mash

If you will look in the Bird Food room you will find many good recipes for mash and other ideas for presenting real food. You should not need to feed pellets or add any vitamins if you feed a balanced mix or dark leafy greens and brightly colored veggies along with other grains, legumes, beans and a little fruit.
  18. His form of stress control, Pookie does it when she feels to much is going on and I have read that is Gil birds way as well. as to the prior conversation I have often thought a large property with more than one abode kind of a Bird savvy compound would work for many of us. Some one to cover during illness or travel with out worry as the birds would know everyone and no strangers entering to provide care. Kind of like we interact on this site to boost each other up and share our joys and sorrows. A big organic garden and bulk purchasing could happen as well. Oh well I dream on.
  19. Scary time for you both I think, so happy she is back and intact. Harness-good idea.
  20. It is an unknown factor coming into play when they make that decision as what voice to speak this human language in. You can follow some history in voice and verbiage when they come from unknown backgrounds. Just one more fascinating portion on living "Grey".
  21. It will depend on how he handles the loss of his partner and is able to heal and move forward. My heart goes out to him and appreciate your willingness to step in and help. Wish we were close enough to help.
  22. Thankful you two are there to help provide support during such a difficult time.
  23. Our birds are all flighted even when they cam to us never having had the chance to do so weather due to clipping or cage bound life. Now why are you considering clipping? If for safety - it will not prevent loss due to escape flight. If for taming - I think it is a breach of trust rather than a way to build trust. If for limiting your birds access - then that won't work, they can walk climb and find a way around most any obstruction.
  24. Sounds like his bags are unpacked and he transitioned in like he was born there.
