1. Hey Everyone - I was searching on this site and couldn't find anything on this topic. I am pretty handy and would like to make a play structure for Meko...any suggestions or Ideas would really help. Thanks
2. Yes my quaker is very, very sweet but also very jelous of Meko since we brought him home. They are both clipped so no one gets hurt and we keep their perches in the same room with supervision and their cages are upstairs. Meko seems to quiver daily - I will continue to monitor that... I'm glad to know that talking "alone" is normal, I was worried that he felt insecure around my husband since they both spend most of the day with just me. But they are well socialized with the entire family so I guess they are progressing normally. Thanks again for the feedback and have a great day!

4. Oh - it's just belly feathers... I read somewhere that that meant he was scared. That didn't seem to make sense because he doesn't seem scared. Thanks so much for the reply. I will be more chatty in front of him (he lives in a house with Me, My husband and our two teen daughters)lots of chatter around lol.
5. Hello Everyone, My 3 year old "Meko" seems to be doing well. He has been with us now for about a month. He started talking and making sound effects on the first day of arrival in our home. He is till scared to death of the little Quaker "Bella"...I wonder if they will ever be friends? A few things he does that seem odd: 1. He seems to be talking a little less when we are in the room - but He will chatter on when I an in my office and he is in the living room / kitchen. He also seems to talk more when my husband is not around. Some of the new things he has picked up are my husbands laugh, clearing of his throat (allergy season), "Hello" in his voice, "come here" in his voice and I think "good boy" all in his voice - but he Meko seems shy around him... 2. He still seems like he is "shivering" or his feathers are "quivering" almost like he is scared - is this common and how long before he feels more comfortable? I am laid off right now so I am home with him a lot...any thoughts? You have all been so nice and helpful - I'm glad I found this site. {Feel-good-00020114}
6. I am new to this site...and to African Grey Parenthood. We have recently (10 days ago) adopted a 3 year old African Grey named Meko. We are his third (and final) home. He seemed to take to our family right away, stepping up, speaking, etc... (few words) He started testing me with his beak - but I got some great tips from this site, so no more biting. He seems to like my husband but talks more when he's not around (not sure what that is about). We also are the proud parents of a 7 month old quaker parrot, a black lab, yellow lab, cat, 100 gallon saltwater fish tank, 12 gallon nano reef, two Japanese water dragons, and 2 budgies. Oh yeah - and two teenage daughters lol. Other interest include cooking,entertaining and photography. We have done a lot of research, however - any advice, tips, etc... is GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks, Jessi

Post edited by: Jgo1973, at: 2009/04/21 17:21

8. Yea-I'm working on that...his new t-stand is coming today or tomorrow, then I can move his cage upstairs and have a place for him to hang with the human flock downstairs. I think that will help.

However I LOVE reefs and saltwater fish ( I have a 100 gallon tank too) so I overcame my fears and "dove it" so to speak. I must say I'm pretty proud of myself too ;P Snorkeling is awesome and when I did it in Maui I had a "water weenie" under my arms so don't feel bad lol!

11. That is what I did with my Quaker and it worked really well. But Meko just bites my other hand Bella (my quaker) has been with us since January and is about the sweetest thing ever now. No more biting at all. I also think he isn't getting enough sleep.We have adjusted his schedule to in bed by 10 and up at 8...the problem is he is making all kinds of noise under there this morning - he knows I'm up...
12. Thank You so much! I am a newly certified Scuba diver We just got back from Cabo and that was my first dive at 70'.
13. Thanks for the tips - they both sound perfect! I hadn't heard of the earthquake roll before... Meko is our first "big bird" we have many exotic pets and a quaker named Bella. Here are some pics of them...the picture of Meko is on his first day home
14. Hello, I am new to this site - We just adopted Meko, he is 3 years old and took to the family right away. He seems to be well socialized, he is speaking and steps up on command. We got one week ago today, and he just started biting yesterday. It's not a "beaking" its a "biting". Once he steps up then he will cock his head and bite down on my thumb or fingers. I am trying just not to respond...can I get some opinions of the best method to end the behavior and or possible causes? Thanks so much, Jessi
