  1. We got the aviator harness. I was more afraid of putting it on him than he was. I watched that dumb video a gazillion times, but it was a cinch to put on Moose. My biggest problem is that he likes to chew on it. Grrrrrrr
  2. Ugh! My 4 month old CAG is major picky! He loves eggs but his poop has got a lot of white in it so no more this week....I have tried soaking his pellets in a little bit of cranberry juice but he's not having any of that... any ideas on getting him to try new things? Right now he doesn't even eat seeds! I offer him a bunch of options--he loves mac and cheese and lasagna, but that can't be good every day....<br><br>Post edited by: vgladden40, at: 2009/04/08 07:06
  3. Ha! He is gutsty, smart, clumsy, brave to a fault. He eats like there is no tomorrow, he barks and coos and nibbles in between. Sometimes he just cocks his head at me and looks at me with one eye and expects me to read his mind. He's an adorable little monster. Any names that interest me have been picked. I had decided on moose. My dad wants goober. My mom wants rascal. I want his name to fit him. It will come to me.
  4. I know but why NOW after 2 weeks? He's doing something he's never done...the hunched over and aiming where he's going to go. He misses and then I have to rush over cuz he's staring down a dog on the floor. Lololol.
  5. My baby has always flopped aeound but today for the first time he has crouched down in the pre flight position and is actively trying to fly, which of course, fails. The breeder clipped the long feathers on both sides so he flaps on his way down. She said he flew before she clipped him. Does anyone have an idea of why NOW?
  6. He was dna tested by breeder. When I got him he was "beaking" food but not getting much in him. I have been lucky that he's eating on his own now. He was on the skinny side. I have to name him. I am at a loss. Lol. Good luck with yours as well!!!
  7. He weighs 425 grams already! He's really really come a long way in just a few weeks. No name for him yet but he is soooo easy going it's unreal. NOTHING phases him. He will be 4 months on the 7th and I will start potty training him. I already say the word potty when I see him go. I have an aviator harnass. I am worried that I will freak him out so I'm taking my time... he isn't afraid of it. Vicki G
  8. Hey LOOK! That's my baby up there! He's just the pertiest bird in my neighborhood. Of course he's the smartest too, which I'll be able to prove once he learns to perch... <<snort>>
  9. I know I know... sounds like I'm complaining after waiting so long, I'm not. It's just that my baby boy is barely weaned... I made him a birdy omelette with veggies and fruit and applesauce and he's eating it pretty good but I can tell he'd would rather be fed. I tried giving him some food on a spoon and he looked at the spoon like it begat aliens that would chew his head off. LOL. He is sweet and loving. I have to find an avian vet. I don't have a way to weigh him but I can feel his breastbone... is he supposed to be this thin? I am going to do some more research on training because it's time to start getting him to learn to step up. As soon as I'm able to make my pictures smaller I will upload them:) More later!!! Vicki G
  10. I got him! He was hatched on December 7,2008. He was sitting there waiting on me in Gulfport and was so unimpressed that he chewed on his apples as I carried his crate out to the car. I got him in the back with me, armed with my towel to protect me from all kinds of messes and the possibility of a beak attack from a scared youngster and darned if he didn't crawl right up to my face and cuddle. Would NOT let me put him back in his crate so I had to hold him TIGHT to get him into house.... his wings are clipped but he manages to float a little in the direction he falls... he has NO balance to speak up. Silly me... expecting him to know the UP command... DUH.... in fact... DOUBLE DUH... this poor little critter doesn't know how to feed himself properly. I put him on the perch on the top of his cage (which I moved into the bedroom because I was afraid he'd fall and hurt himself trying to show how tough he was to Maggie one of our dogs)and he promptly went for the pears I had cut up for him... he does not know that he can use a foot to hold his food. Either that or he's abundantly smart and knows that he can't balance worth a diddle and will fall flat on his beak and then Maggie will chuff in doggie laughter. It's gonna be an interesting ride. I'm excited to be on it. My other grey was older I guess... it's been so long and my brain has shrunk a lot in that time... Everyone has held him, everyone is talking to him and once I come up with a name I'll let ya'll know! I have to take some good pics and post them. Now...I will continue feeding him lots of fresh foods, talking to him and petting him but should I traumatize him and take him out by grabbing him? He wants to be held but doesn't want to stand on my finger/hand...or do I leave him in the cage until he's willing to come out on his own... And this is going to sound crazy but it's almost like he's crying when he cuddles... I have heard that on the boards but wow... melts the heart. I'm soooo truly blessed! Thank you all for being here to share it. Hugs, Vicki G
  11. I pick up my baby at 4:20 today! He turned 3 months old yesterday. Cage is ready. Gonna pick up food and one of those braided perch thingies otw to the airport. I THINK I MIGHT be getting EXCITED!!!!! I hope so. I have been really really depressed recently and I hope that this little critter can help me find who I am under the gloom. I will be bugging the heck out of ya! Vicki G
  12. Thanks so much. Its very confusing--so much so that the breeder isn't sure she should have charged me $72 in sales tax or not for an out of state online transaction. Ugh. What I have been able to gather from the confusing mess of info I have been able to find that because the breeder doesn't have a physical business in mississippi she isn't supposed to charge me tax--of course that doesn't mean I am right. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!!!
  13. I know this varies from state to state but does anyone know if I have to pay state sales tax for my cag born and raised in md and sold online to me in ms?
  14. I am so sorry. I'm new and have missed most of this but my condolences.
  15. :woohoo: WHOOPEE!!!!!:woohoo: I am supposed to get my bird NEXT WEEK!!!!! I was expecting middle to late March but he is flying and eating on his own so breeder says he's ready. He was born on 12/7 or 12/8 so right at 3 months old! I got a cage. It's pretty good I think. Haven't gotten ONE toy OR food because I had been expecting him to be ready later on, so I have to choose a few toys quick.... Wish me luck!!!!! I am sooo confused. Should I put him in my bedroom so that I can close the door and dogs and cats cant stare at him while he adjusts or should I put him in the spot in living room that I have planned for him so he is involved in all the action of family...there is little action in bedroom and none that I want him repeating.... <<snort>> HALP ME!!!! LOLOLOLOL Newbie from Mississippi Vicki G
  16. Thank you all for such nice posts. I know for a fact that I did what I HAD to do but I deeply regret it. My 2 youngest are off school for Mardi Gras so I haven't had time to really play at the computer and read the overabundance of information that this site has to offer but I most certainly will!!! Friday is the last day of February. That does mean that in the SATURDAY is the first day of the month in which I get my new baby!!!!! Happy happy dance!!!! More later and I look forward to finding my way around and becoming part of this family! What is Karma? How do I give or get it? Cuz I got 2 Karma points that appeared out of nowhere.... Hmmmmm.... :silly: Vicki G :silly:
  17. Oh GOSH, thanks for all of the replies! I SOOO appreciate them. I will get little toys to see what types he likes and then go from there. My plans are to keep him out of his cage as much as he is comfortable and as much as the other pets will allow...I have 3 cats, 3 dogs and a rat. That's not including my 2 kids still at home as well as older ones and grandbabies running around as well...while I know they tend to have favorites I want him to be as well adjusted around others as he can possibly be. I HAVE had a parrot. A grey. I got him in Berkely CA about 16 years ago. He was named smooch and I was able to bring him home on one hand feed.... he was precious and I loved him sooo much. Unfortunately, when my husband retired from the USMC, we ended up selling our home at a loss in North Carolina and packing up 5 kids, dogs and Smooch and coming to Mississippi so he could start an apprenticeship at the local shipyard. There was a strike right after he started and, after pawning everything I had of value and with nowhere else to turn I had to sell my baby, with cage and all toys for rent money. I refused to charge more than the $ owed on rent, I wasn't trying to make a profit on him... he was FAMILY! I know that makes me sound like an awful person. I missed him so much and the guilt was ovwewhelming. I have waited all this time before I would even CONSIDER hoping for another grey to love. I'm scared to death to be honest with you all. I want so much to do everything right for him. The timing is perfect. If I had gotten another bird sooner it would have been so hard. We, like so many others, lost everything to hurricane Katrina and breathing in the mold and death odors would have been so hard for a parrot....we are blessed with safe home that we (and the bank) own and have rebuilt our lives even better and now have the kind of appreciation that unfortunately comes after going through a life changing event that leaves you with the knowledge of how quickly it can all be gone... I strive each and every day to remember to smell the roses NOW and enjoy the little moments that make up our lives NOW before it's too late... So... anyhoo...yes, I'm a previous parrot owner. I'm blessed and oh so grateful that I have the chance to be owned by another one. It's been so long in coming that it really doesn't even seem real most of the time. When it was decided which breeder we were going to choose my husband and I walked out to the mailbox to put the deposit check in together... it's a huge deal! I will be picking up little toys that will give me an idea of what category my little one will favor... no name ideas yet because he and I don't know each other yet so I have no personality to factor into the the name. He was born on December 7, 2008 and I'm hoping that he will be ready to be sent to me middle of next month but he will come when he's ready. I have been reading about the harnasses with interest. I would love to be able to use one that would allow me to take him with me on walks without endangering him. Potty training is another thing I'm trying to find information on... must to my husbands dismay I play on letting him perch (if he wants) on my husbands very dusty and very expensive bowflex that is sitting all nice and pretty in my livingroom... I'll get some use out of that sucker yet.... LOLOLOL.... So, now that you know WAY MORE THAN YOU WANTED, I once again want to thank you for all of your answers and hope that I am allowed to participate fully even though I feel like such an awful person because I sold my grey. Sincerely, Vicki G
  18. Hi! I am new here. I have a baby grey that will be here sometime next month (I hope) and I have picked out a cage and am reading up all I can to refresh my memory on having a grey...there are boingy perchy thingies (LOL) that I have seen at many sites and was hoping for feedback on those...I really need to know what is the most agreed upon toys that I need to have ready and in the cage when my boy is ready to come home. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! :silly: :woohoo: Vicki G :woohoo: Gautier Mississippi
