Chimay is a riot in the mornings.... He will let out a rogue screech here and there (fortunately we don't have a screamer...yet), will fly off of his playtop if I have to leave the living room while getting things together to go to work, and will just sit up on top of his cage flapping his wings and showing off for us. At night however when I get home he is ready to cuddle cuddle cuddle. The only time he's fussy at night is when cuddle-time is over and it's time to go to bed...he climbs down to the bottom of the cage and puts his beak against the bars and starts kicking his leg behind him like a little baby bull. Ha ha! I know it's frustrating for him because he doesn't want cuddle time to be over, but that baby-bull maneuver is just too cute to watch.

He is a very handsome boy...beautiful bright eyes! Thanks for sharing the photo!

I would agree that a vet wellness check would be a good idea regardless of any outward symptoms, since greys don't starts showing symptoms to US until they're already very ill. Plus like She said it's a good idea regardless since he is new to your home. Chimay is about 5 months old, and I would have to agree with SchrodersJen on the ratio of 90% sweet 10% twerp. Maybe even 80/20 sometimes. Ha ha! I would put my money on him testing his boundaries with you...like a testy little toddler. Please keep us posted on his progress!

New to Forum - and new Grey owner
chimaysmommy replied to dberes's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
She's beautiful! Welcome dberes!! I love the red feathers on her belly. I also have no experience with a re-homed grey...hopefully with time Gracie will come to accept your wife little by little. Maybe the previous owner's wife did/said/caused something that caused Gracie stress and she never forgave her. Best of luck and keep us posted on any progress! -
Those pics are really adorable....Ha ha! Did he put up much fuss when you rolled him over? I've thought about trying that out with Chimay to see if he would enjoy it...

Aaawwww!!!! That is so sweet!! Yay! Thank you!

Chimay's coming up on 5 months old, and just yesterday he started a new behavior that had me a little puzzled...not worried, just puzzled. I returned home from work and started our "basket time" where I put him on his basket and talk to him and let him play, and when I went in for a beak rub he kind of squatted down and started bobbing his head as if he was feeding. I know he wasn't regurgitating, nothing came up and I'm figuring he's too young for that anyway. And I know he wasn't hungry because he had just downed some birdie bread with broccoli. Any thoughts on why he would be doing this? He kind of squatted down with his head straight up, and his wings out just slightly. Other than this new feeding-bobbing maneuver, he isn't acting like he's sick...playing normally and his appetite is as strong as ever.

Hello everyone! African grey named Juice.
chimaysmommy replied to Oldcockatoo's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Welcome! I love the name you have for your grey! How long has he been plucking? I love the chandalier (sp?) photo... -
Aw how cute! She looks like she's having a blast... Let us know if she ever starts sleeping upside down too! Ha ha... Sorry bad joke B)

Chimay is so very affectionate, and he wants to go straight for my shoulder and snuggle against my face every time I pick him up...unfortunately that also meant that my glasses fell victim to him on a few occasions. Fortunately I was able to save them before they were bitten to pieces, but there have been close calls. So what do I do? Stop allowing him on my shoulder? No way...I go out and buy a year's worth of contact lenses instead so that I don't have to deprive him of shoulder-time! Ha ha! I couldn't help it tho...I enjoy the shoulder time just as much as he does, maybe moreso. Unfortunately my vision insurance doesn't cover the contacts AT ALL...but it's worth it!

Aaww!! He's getting so grown up!! Pretty soon he'll be wanting to stay out all night, tattoos, piercings...ha ha ha! He/she's beautiful!

We only had Chimay for about a week before we went out and got a handheld vacuum to help with cleanup. Of course the clean floor normally lasts about five minutes tops. Ha ha!!! He loves flinging food...almost as much as he likes watching mommy and daddy scramble to pick up bits of mashed yams and broccoli. I read on other posts that some people buy posters and hang them with the back facing out behind the cage...I love that idea! We will definitely have to employ that technique to try and save our walls!

What is YOUR cags favorite shreddable?
chimaysmommy replied to littlehawk's topic in Homemade Toys & Playstands
Chimay loves loves loves wicker...my mom bought him an unfinished wicker basket with a toy hanging from the handle so that he can sit by the window. Our apartment just doesn't have the space for a seperate playstand, so the basket is like a cheap portable one. Apparantly it's also very fun and easy to destroy! Lol! He's stripped all of the little wicker pieces from the handle and is now moving on to the basket itself. We've tried to buy little wicker-like foot toys for him to see if we can make the basket last a little longer but none are as much fun as tearing up grandma's basket! -
Thank you for all of the great advice everyone! I'll probably get a harness in the next week or two and see how it goes. Whenever we take his first walk outside I'll have to survey the area pretty well...our apartment complex has a lot of dog owners that are outside a lot, and one guy at the end of our street who seems to always be out playing with remote control cars at every weather-permissible opportunity  I'd hate for him to get freaked out by a dog or a remote control car on his first day outside

Ha ha ha!!! Awesome! I can't wait...

Aw!! I'll be sure to post plenty of pics of the exhibit. I spoke with my mom about it and she said that she's seen it before....it's a huge outdoor aviary with greys flying around everywhere. Too bad we can't take our Chimay to go see it too! Ha ha...

So my boyfriend said that a girl he works with who LOVES greys told him that here at the Columbus, OH zoo there's an aviary with about 50 greys on display!! :woohoo: When he told me that I got all giddy like a little kid again "I wanna go to the zoo! I wanna go to the zoo!" We probably won't be able to go until next weekend, with this weekend being a holiday and all. When we go I'll be sure to take my camera along and take some pics of it and post them here!

Aw what a cutie pie! He is really beautiful...I'm sorry to hear about the less-than wonderful results from his vet visit. Please keep us posted on further results!!

OMG I JUST GOT MY BABY CONGO!!
chimaysmommy replied to MrLourdes's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Congratulations on your new baby!!! Do you know that she's a girl or are you having a DNA test done? Our Chimay loves my shoulder as well...he's just recently discovered it. We still try and make sure that he gets plenty of time to himself in/on the cage and his window basket, but any time I pick him up he wants to go straight to the shoulder. Just makes ur heart melt! Lol! We definately keep him inside the cage whenever we're not in the room or out of the house. If he doesn't know where we are his first instinct is to jump off of the cage and go find us. Please keep us posted on your baby's progress and hope to see some pictures soon!

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/04/07 22:19 -
Oh I guess I know where I'm shopping this weekend! Lol!!

I've been toying with the idea of getting a flight harness for Chimay, but I haven't completely decided. I think he would absolutely love the outdoors, he already loves being on his unfinished wicker basket by our window during some of his out-of-cage time. My question is, what are the pros/cons? Dangers? I would be horrified if either the harness failed or I somehow didn't do it right and he flew off. Any thoughts?

I agree....there's such a huge population of "non-native" animal breeders, it seems like that would be a tough thing to enforce/begin enforcing. And I don't buy the line about dogs/cats being excluded because they're "barnyard" animals. I think it's simply because eliminating such a common household pet would be impossible and would put many animal shelters and pet stores COMPLETELY out of business.

I just started a subscription to a birdie magazine today, and came across this article that made my jaw drop. Being new to the birdie world, I'm not sure if this has been a hot topic for a while but apparantly there is a hearing to take place on April 23 to discuss the possible banning of various non-native animal species in the USA (most bird species, hamsters, gerbils, etc). Before anyone feels the same wave of panic that I did when I read it, the article states at the very end that any pet owners that began their ownership prior to the "risk assessment" will get to keep their animals should the ban pass. How awful would that be? http://www.birdchannel.com/bird-news/2009/04/02/nonnative-species-ban.aspx

Wow! Love the article...very informative. Our Chimay is only 4 months old right now but that I plan to keep that article bookmarked to reference when he starts his first molt. Karma to you!
