  1. Congratulations that is a lovely little chickadee! I will be bringing home a yellow crowned amazon chick mid August - I can't wait! :silly: How old is this one and when will you be taking it home?<br><br>Post edited by: HappyinGreece, at: 2009/07/15 14:21
  2. Awwwwww poor thing. Lots of cuddles and the favorite foods needed here.... Praying for you that all is well, and it very likely will be. Doctors tend to be overzealous and often negative, just to prepare you for the worst "in case".
  3. Awwww thanks gals. Appreciate your advice and encouragement. I would also prefer a female for the same reasons you mentioned. The breeder has a female and a male which are both almost ready to go to homes. He really likes the female (his personal favorite), thinks she is very sweet. I told him I would like to take a bird home at the end of August so that my vacation will be over and I won't stress out the little birdie by having to take it on long car trips, etc. when I first get him home. (We have some property with a small trailer on it 4 1/2 hours drive.) (Of course he mentioned that the amazon won't have a problem - that they are not like the greys and won't stress out...) I asked him if he could keep the bird for me until the end of August but he said that since he's feeding and caring for a lot of babies, once it's fully weaned he won't have time to spend with it and it may suffer from lack of socialization. He said that in any case he will have more 3 YHAs ready at the end of August and I can choose from those, otherwise I should take the sweet female. Also I don't think my husband is too keen on complicating our short vacation time (due to my newish job) even more by having the baby bird AND the two kittens to take care of... What do you think? P.S. Sorry, that photo was just an Amazon pic I found - it's not one of the birds at the breeders. I should have taken photos but I forgot in my excitement...next time! 4. Well the news is unfortunate. The last chick didn't make it either. I guess it's not meant to be right now, because when I went back to the pet shop (not the one I bought Alex from) to visit a CAG I've been petting for the last 3 months, he was gone too... so even my wavering reserve about not buying another imported bird was squashed. I also spoke to another breeder in Athens who I had not contacted before and he told me that he had no eggs so far this year at all. Not a good year for reproduction it seems... This same breeder also gave me a good reference for the one I've been dealing with all along, so it only strengthened my resolve to purchase a bird from him, whatever it is... I will still get my TAG or CAG but later on it seems. For now, it looks like my next baby is going to be a yellow fronted amazon. He also has yellow naped and double yellow head but I will not get those because unfortunately you cannot get a CITES certificate in Greece right now if you want to export the bird (in case I relocate?). I don't want to take the chance. I went to visit him yesterday and confirmed my gut feelings about him. You can see that his birds adore him and he loves what he does. I think I'd rather get a great non-traumatized healthy baby amazon from him than to get a questionable CAG from a pet shop again... at least for now. He suggested I get a male bird. His experience has been that birds tend to prefer humans of the opposite sex more frequently. Do any of you have an opinion on this? P.S. Does anyone have a yellow fronted amazon??
  5. Yes, I agree. However they don't seem to be having any problem with it. They look really healthy and full feathered... Nice cage, huh? It's about the size of my bedroom LOL
  6. Onions and garlic well cooked in foods is a staple ingredient of the Mediterranean diet. I cannot digest raw onions properly, but I don't have any trouble with cooked ones. It seems that the cooking process breaks down the enzymes. Is cooked onion and garlic OK for birds? i.e If I share my garden vegetable stew with my bird?
  7. Does anyone have a pantagonian conure? They seem very mischievous and bold!
  8. I adore that photo, the name, and Star Trek! You should have named Salsa Captain Kirk. Live long and prosper.
  9. ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE!!!!! Maybe Adanna thinks it's a baby CAG cause it's grey too???? NA SOU ZISEE (Let it live for you) a Greek blessing when a new baby comes into the family!!! Here are my babies at 2 months old (now almost 3 1/2 months old)Selini on left (girl) and Simba on right (Boy) Can't wait to find out what you will name her! <br><br>Post edited by: HappyinGreece, at: 2009/07/07 13:22
  10. Reporting from Athens Greece where it's been an average of 31 Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) but it feels a lot warmer than that due to the humidity - we've been having passing thunderstorms for 10 days now, unusual for Greece. Must be the melting ice caps... Ceiling fans are on at home and I had to turn on the aircon at work which I dislike but I get sleepy in the heat.
  11. The breeder who I am supposed to be getting my TAG egg from (chances are dwindling, however) also raises hawkheads. The male is Euro 980 and the female is Euro 1200. Is it a difficult bird to own? Your birds are beautiful. How is the behavior of the amazon so different than the grey?
  12. Oh I'm really sorry about what happened. What a let down. Perhaps it was meant to be, though? Russian blues are beautiful cats. I have experience with siamese cats. They are wonderful but perhaps a little too tough to have around birds. We got a himalayan and a persian kitten 2 months ago. You can see the siamese in the himalayan - she's not afraid of anything. The persian is much more laid back, lazy (although he loves to play too) and he's also a real moosh. At three months old he's already climbing up my lap to rub his face against my head. I think he'll be less of a risk to my parrot (when I get him - I lost my CAG a few months ago) although he's twice the size of my himalayan! Good job waking the seller up like that!! :evil:
  13. OK if you ever feel inspired again - do with my profile what you will - Sir Dave, Poet Extraordinaire.... {Communicate-000200D5}
  14. wow me and my daughter really enjoyed that video. We LOVE the way she talks and sings to herself - such a soft sing song voice! I will certainly try to teach those cute little nonsense to my bird! Thanks for sharing.
  15. Hi, I'd like to put my two cents in here. I raised 2 doberman pups, brother and sister. I spent a lot of time training them, I didn't have any other pets at the time except for a small-medium poodle mix. I found that the male was much quicker to react before thinking and was jealous of the female who considered her actions. In the end, on walks, I could keep the female off leash but not the male. They got along fine with the poodle, she was their surrogate mom actually, but they were both jealous of her when she used to go on trip with us in the car but they didn't. My poodle got picked up by the neck and shaken by the female once for having a big bitchie "leave me alone" attitude one day when she walked in the gate after coming back from a trip in the car. The female dobie was simply trying to kiss her and welcome her and felt betrayed. They are very emotional. They are excellent loving dogs but highly excitable. You have to know what pushes their buttons to avoid a confrontation with other animals. When they were puppies, a stray cat wandered in to our property (we had 1 acre and the dobermans lived outside) and walked right up to the food dish while the dogs were eating and ate with them. The dobies had no problem with that and welcomed her. I wanted to keep the cat but I was voted down by the other family members who I was living with at the time. I so wish we had kept the cat - had they grown up with it they would have been more tolerant with other animals, I'm sure. As it turned out, whenever a stray cat roamed into our property they chased it down and killed it. There was nothing I could do about it. They just got too excited. I totally agree with Dan that they are very visual and get excited with fast moving things. If something runs they will chase it and grab it, period. I loved the dogs very much and I would get another one if I had a big yard. I do believe that if they grow up around other animals they are fine, they are just very sensitive so you have to be aware. Sorry for going on and on... hope it helps.
  16. Hello all. Thanks so much for all the love coming this way - it gives me encouragement and certainly helps the cosmic consciousness!! No news yet, but as for reasons why, the breeder mentioned that he miscalculated the age of the eggs and tried to assist the first chick by helping to open the egg. He realized it was too soon and the chick was too weak. The second one he left alone and it couldn't get out (too dry?). It was a bad cell phone connection. He was on site feeding 50 babies and I could hardly hear him through all the background screeching LOL! He just reiterated that he doesn't have luck with greys (that belief doesn't help either). Anyhow I'm out of town for a few days and won't be on line much, but I wanted to thank you all for your support and will write when I get news.
  17. Ok I feel like I've been waiting forever, but soon we will find out. My chosen breeder, who specializes in Amazons, also has CAGs and TAGs but hasn't had any luck with them so far. This year, for the first time, his 2 TAG breeding pairs produced eggs. The eggs from the one pair were not fertile. The other pair produced 3 fertile eggs which he put into the incubator. One chick died shortly after it hatched, one died before it managed to hatch, and now we are waiting on number three. We should know in the next 4 days. I feel so sad for the other two, but I'm praying that this one will make it. Please send some positive life force vibes to this little egg in Greece - I so do want to raise it and give it a good home, and above all, if this egg doesn't make it, then I have a dilemma. Do I buy another grey from another pet shop and take my chances (my last grey baby died) or should I buy a different parrot from him?
  18. The sound on my PC is not so good. What's Alfie saying?
  19. My soon-to-be-nine year old daughter grabbed my camera and took a bunch of photos with the cats. I thought you might like to see a glimpse of life through her eyes.... These cats are saints - they put up with it all and purr the whole time... turn up your speakers LOL :woohoo:
  20. Welcome Virginia, I'm so glad you joined us!!! There are lots of different subjects of interest on this forum - enough to keep you from concentrating on your job hee hee... There are also lots of people with a lot of experience in owning and caring for Greys but also other birds. Looking forward to reading your posts. Cheers! Renate (and the eggs....) <br><br>Post edited by: HappyinGreece, at: 2009/06/24 13:48
  21. Congratulations to all of you talented folks!!! I got some great ideas from you guys. {Feel-good-0002006B}
  22. Wow sounds like a really beautiful bird. Next time take a picture! There is a feral community of indian ringneck parrots in my neighborhood - about 12 of them. It's fun to hear them calling to each other. You can hear them from 5 blocks away... Whenever they come around they scare the crap out of the pigeons LOL with their presence. (Not that they do anything to them.) I like to watch them fly by overhead. I've tried to leave food for them but they won't come near my apartment balcony...
  23. Thanks Joolesgreyuk. I think it has a lot to do with the species and the training and sensitivity of the owner, for sure. I am hoping to get 2 TAGs this fall, I'm waiting to see if my chosen breeder will be successful with the eggs his 2 pairs have produced. I don't know if they will be noisier because they will have each other's company, but everyone seems to agree that greys are relatively quiet birds. As for this news clip, some parrot owners on other lists are saying that the lady in the video who owns the lorikeet, Mira Tweti, is a supporter of some proposed legislation that would end ownership of pet birds in the U.S., HR 669 which is not only going after parrots and reptiles, it wants to outlaw aquarium fish, gerbils, ferrets and many more species which are kept as pets today in North America.
  24. Check out the news report via this link: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5101167n&tag=contentMain;contentBody Please share this with anyone you know considering a parrot.
  25. HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY from us too!!
