1. Hello Forkeeps, I live in VA as well. Did you rescue your bird from Project Perry? My 3-yr old CAG plucks herself as well. The thing that seems to be working for Wilma is the "sock buddy". It is a sweater made from a sock. Here is a link. http://www.thesockbuddy.com/ The sock buddy gets pretty tattered since she plucks at it, but it is better than plucking at herself. It seems to "scratch the plucking itch" with her. Dave
2. My 3-yr old CAG is a plucker. She started shortly after she became two. I have tried everything that has been suggested. I have been using the "sock buddy" and it is working. Wilma's feathers are returning and she actually seems happier. She does tend to destroy one sock buddy a week but it is better than plucking herself. I also give her read palm oil. I mix three days dose with a scrambled egg and give it to her over a three day period. She loves scrambled eggs. I also have a humidifier running near her cage during the winter and a UV light. Just to warn you, Wilma destroyed her first two sock buddys within a day but now they last about a week. Just my two cents worth.
3. I don't know if this applies to Greys or not but my Grey, Wilma, always holds her food in her left claw (foot, hand). I first noticed it when only her left foot gets stained with stawberry juice (her favorite fruit). Has anyone else noticed this.
4. I feed my CAG, Wilma, pellets as her primary staple food. When she eats, she drops broken pellets and pellet "dust" back into her food cup. I have been dumping the cup out when I refill her cup with pellets. This seems to me to be somewhat wasteful because I end up dumping a lot of whole and half pellets with the "waste" when I do this. Should I be sifting out the small bits and "dust" and keeping the whole and half pellets in the cup or is that not good for Wilma?

Post edited by: davek85, at: 2009/03/31 20:15

Ok, fine. More for me then!
6. I just had Wilma rechecked today and she got an all clear from the Vet.
7. My CAG, Wilma, talks more to my wife than me. I think it has to do with the fact that she has a higher pitched voice.

Wilma doesn't seem to know what to do with almonds in the shell. She takes it from me and then just drops it. I tried oening them a little but she still does nothing with them. Does she just not like them?
9. I just watched a video called "Captive Foraging" by Dr. Scott Echols. My vet loaned the video to me suggesting that I build a "foraging tree" for my CAG, Wilma. It looks real easy to do. I'm going to build one. It looks like fun for both Wilma and me. Has anyone else seen this video or built a foraging tree?
10. There were no symptoms. I took her to the vet within two days of getting her from the breeder. My vet didn't seem too concerned. She gave me two medications to feed Wilma and told me to bring a fresh fecal sample by for testing in two weeks. The medications were cheap ($25 total). I let the breeder know about the problem.
11. I just took my new CAG Wilma to the vet on Friday. The vet said she was in great health except for some intestial parasites. The vet said she had Coccidia and round worms. The vet said that this is common and gave use medicne to treat her. Has anyone else had this problem?
12. Ok here is the picture of Wilma and me. It took me three tries to get it posted....Four tries..

Post edited by: davek85, at: 2009/02/13 12:41
13. Wilma is home! I picked her up on Wednesday. She has settled in very well. Boy, what a sweet bird! MJ (the breeder) sure raised a very sociable bird. She loves to be with everyone in the family. Boy I tell you I am so glad I got her. I had debated long and hard about whether to get her or an Amazon. I made the right choice! Here is a picture of her on my shoulder. Post edited by: davek85, at: 2009/02/13 12:32

Post edited by: davek85, at: 2009/02/13 12:34

So far the candidate names are: Yoshabel (Yoshi) Peppermint Patty Priscilla Faustina I hope that once I get her home I will know what to call her. 15. This is Murphy. He is a TAG at the sanctuary. He is up for adoption. Matt, the owner of the sanctuary, told me that he is a sad case. He was rescued from a bad situation and may have been abused and/or neglected. He is very shy. Matt tried to get him to join the other grays in his huge grey aviary but Murphy was afraid of the other birds and hid in the bushes all the time. So, Matt now keeps him in a cage (that is open) in the house. I hope to be able to get him to warm up to me so that I can adopt him. I just need to find the time to voluteer so that I can spend some time with Murphy. I feel so bad for Murphy.
16. Project Perry is located in Louisa just south of Lake Anna. Matt started it about 3 years ago on 15 acres that he owns.
17. Wow! I visited this sancuary last Saturday. What a great sanctuary. Matt, the owner, is a great guy and really cares for the birds. I have never seen so many parrot in one place. He has many birds up for adoption. He even has one Grey named Murpy. He is very particular about who he adopts out birds to. HE requires all adoptors to spend time with the bird at the sanctuary to make sure that the bird and you get along. I hope to be able to spend some time voluteering there.
18. I am in contact with Matt at Project Perry (a parrot sanctuart near me). I plan on paying him a visit at the sanctuary next month. He tells that he is contacted by many people looking for to rehome their birds. I may end up adopting a bird through him. As far as other birds go I do not have any at this time. I have three Boston Terriers and 11 Koi right now. I have had a budgie, zebra finches (4 that bred into 24), a Nanday Conure, and two lovebirds that bred into 7. Dave
19. I found a parrot sanctuary near my home. It is called Project Perry (www.projectperry.com). I am considering visiting the place. Is anyone familiar with it?
20. I have been looking at birdbreeders.com. It looks pretty legimate. There are many breeders listing available birds. It even has feedback info about the breeders. Does anyone have any experience/opinions about this site?
21. Ok, how do I find the bird that is right for me? Since I will most likely be getting a weaned baby, how will I know which baby is right for me?

Birdtricks

Thanks everyone. I suspected that it was a way to separate me from my money with little pay back. I am glad I didn't give him any.
23. Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. I will be spending a lot of time reading this website. I have already found many excellent posts.
