I feel for you - know exacttly what you mean and have same problem, although our Grey is with us since a couple months only. I wrote a post titled "screams when I leave room", actually now it screams when I'm around too and it really riles me. Anyway I got a lot of good aDVICE you can read it if you look on that post. good luck! ps What seems to work is putting him back in cage and closing a door between me and him, by that I mean closing his cage in a different room. He then seems to enter his own world and quietens down.

Does anyone know if there are any videos posted on here? And if so, how do we access them? I'm trying to find out if it will be possible for me to post some too. Thanks!

My Grey did that and so did my parakeets, it's to soften their food or maybe just to make it taste a little morte interesting, kind of like adding a litle olive oil and to a bowl of sauceless pasta! Anyway, as you say , the water soon got very grimy, which created bacteria for the birds and extra work for me. I found a good solution, I addded those drinking bottles that hamsters and rabbits use (different sizes according to the different birds) and let them have both the bottles AND the bowl for a few days...they quickly realized that the bottles were also a source of water, and a freh water too! So when I was sure they knew how the bottle worked, I took the bowls out and they've been on the bottle ever since. It's great! And the water is always clean.

ok I'll shut up then;)

mmmm. I wouldn't be so harsh on them. Yes, they're a business, but, if you watch their videos, they do seem to have a knack. And stick training is only a small part of it. The idea of "positive reinforcement" for instance, I think would definitely be worth exploring, if time allowed. The point is, their stuff works if you can devote to it about eight hours a day and total consistency. Most of us can't afford that kind of dedication, and so it doesn't work for us. It does for them because it's their job, 9 to 5. It has to work!

Seems to me that, to make their stuff work, you need many hours a day, and total consistency, which I don't think many of us can afford. They make it work because it's their job and they can dedicate to it their full-time attention.

Thankyou all for this your concern and sound advice, I am taking note of everything you say, and am putting it to good use... good to hear that it works, will try and grab that book about clicker training. Pablo is fine, seems to be taking things a little easier, so many thoughts come to mind, like how great it is that we can communicate like his about something as unique as the CAG - I mean at the end of the day, we are reaping the benefits, but the birds even more so. Technology seems to go hand-in-hand with parrot happiness... funny huh?!

Thanx Acapella, karma to you too! Loooked at your profile and how you got Dorian is really similar to how I got Pablo! ...years in a petshop, then they decide to give it to me as they rate me as a good match for him, he too was previously not for sale. They believe he'll be happier and will get more attention and intelligent stimulation (as opposed to the kind of demented stimulation he was getting from kids etc in the store!), so they sell it to me and I can pay in monthly rates. Luckily he's a gem and very happy to sit on shoulders etc. The only evidence of him being a he is his name! Next time he has a blood test I will also have him sexed... kind of wish he was a she... too many male pets around lately! And no, no papers whatsoever. this is Italy remember. Thanx for your advice, Matt & Pablo

Wow. many thanks to you all for your prompt and thorough responses. It'll take me a while to absorb all this information! Will keep you posted. mxx

SO SORRY FOR YOUR BABY, BIG HUG.

Dear all! this site is brilliant ..a whole bunch of people that love what I love..didn't think it was possible! I live in Rome with my fourteen year-old son, a black Labrador called Groovy and a little colony of 7 Kakarikis which are wonderful New Zealand parakeets. I'm Italian born but I spent half my life in London and my son was born there, but we've been in Italy for 10 years now. I'm now 42. We've just adopted a 5-6 yr-old supposedly male Grey called Pablo who is a delight - he was in a pet-shop for the last four-or-so years, and he learnt all related sounds, from answering the phone to barking like a puppy or whistling like a canary. When my dog goes near him Pablo barks at him!!! I will post photos and videos at some point, when I figure out how, and when I have some more time on my hands. Couple of problems: Pablo took a Chlamydia test (psittacosis: parrot fever) and resulted ONLY JUST negative, by that I mean he had traces of it, he is a healthy carrier. The vet prescribed specific antibiotics which I'm administering at the moment. He's also written a note for me to show my doctor in case I get a serious cough or breathing problem - the note tells the doctor to test me for Chlamydia... bit worrying, especially for my son. Could've taken him back to the shop, but couldn't face it. The other problem is that he's picked me as his "parent" and tends to want to bite my son...a one person parrot it seems...not ideal, but hey, I'm the one that does all the work anyway. Any suggestions or accounts of past experiences are very welcome, especially about the Chlamydia. Best regards to all of you, Matt

Dear Dave, thanks for taking the time to write. Just adopted means a month ago, and your advice is very reassuring: he has to settle, and so do I, new situations are strange for everybody: his shrieks are already beginning to sound less offensive to the ear-drum, just hope the neighbours feel the same! Anyway, the bird is amazing, look forward to seeing him every new day. will be posting more questions as time goes by and your help will always be very welcome. Matt

and I would introduce myself if I could find the welcome room, where is it??

Hi! Oh Yes, 7 years old ! unbelieeeeevable! I'm going insane trying to work out how this site works... I'm the kind of guy that quickly scooted out of facebook, and I guess this is similar, but I like it because it's to do with birds. Anyway, that's to say that I have no idea how these sites work. I have a question about my grey, I've posted it around the site in various places. He screams when I leave the room . AAAArgh!!!

Just adopted a Grey from a petshop, where he lived for about four years in a small cage and had very little play. He's now so happy about the freedom and attention he's getting with me that he has developed an incredibly piercing and unbearable scream whenever I'm out of sight. What do I do??????
