Could always replace bast*rd with plastered

Yep, I'm actually buying a couple of really cheap but BIG rope/wood chew toys I've seen online, my father knows the owner of a sawmill so I think getting untreated wood will be no problem! As far as his training is going it's been good so far, he's not biting anymore and nearly always stepping off my arm into his cage when I want to put him back in. He's quietened down a lot as well which is great!

Fixed the original post, thanks again! Hopefully will get some more pics of him and my CAG Jake in the future, I really need to get a proper camera!

Thanks Jilly, I'll give that a go now...lets see if it works!

Post edited by: tommyn, at: 2009/10/13 21:15

I couldn't get them to display a thumbnail for some reason

Hey guys, yesterday Meiko's playstand arrived and thankfully it was in great condition despite being used. I got it off ebay for 85 euro, couriered from England to Ireland! Bargain! I gave it a good scrubbing all over with Safe4Pets disinfectant and boiling water before letting him on it...but when he got on it, I couldn't get him to get off it! He loves it  I attatched some pics just to give a general idea of it, however the pics arent of great quality and the blinding light didn't help either. Anyway here they are

Post edited by: tommyn, at: 2009/10/13 21:35

Hi guys, is it ok to house a macaw and a cockatiel in the same room? I know the dander/dust off of cockatoos and african greys can lead to respiratory problems in macaws, but was wondering do cockatiels have the same effect? Meikos playstand arrived this morning and the plan was to be able to wheel it into the living room in the evening and have it in the hallway during the day, unfortunately its so big it won't even fit out into the hallway..so it looks like I either have to get rid of it for something smaller, or move my cockatiels cage out of the living room. There's already a large cage for my CAG Jake and the cockatiels cage in there, so it's a bit much having a huge playstand in there too. My only other option is to rehome the cockatiel, however he's just starting to get tame and I hate the thought of rehoming him and someone being cruel to him. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Tom

Thanks for the link Casper, with the Harrison's food theres a certain type you put them on first for 6-9 months isn't there?

Meiko was very awkward when I first put toys into his cage and he broke 3 or 4 of the biggest ones, seems to have got the hang of it now though and his tail is fine.

My father always gave my CAG cooked chicken bones and usually said 'Here's a piece of your long lost cousin.' when handing it to him

Thanks for the reply Caitlin, I'm in Ireland. Pearllyn gave me a link to Northern Parrots and they deliver to Ireland and are fairly cheap with their toys I'm going to look into making my own too. Thanks again for your post. Tom

Thanks for the reply Jilly, I'll give them an e-mail now to see if they'll ship it here.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but when I was at the veterinary clinic with Meiko the vet suggested I try Harrison's for my macaw, I forgot to ask while up there but what's the general price for it?

Looks great, it's good for us men to have our own fortress of solitude.

Hi guys, not exactly 'Homemade' toys, but does anyone know of any websites or ebay shops that post internationally? After seeing some peoples cages and so many different types of toys I want to get some more for Meiko and Jake, but really and truly there are no worthwhile toys in the petshops in my area, they're all small and extremely expensive and will be destroyed in a matter of minutes. So if anyone has any suggestions, please post! :cheer: Tom

I have loads taken and on my phone but haven't got the cable to transfer them to the PC! I'll have to buy one this week. I've also managed to get my CAG Jake start coming out of his cage again. He's refused to come out of it the past few months no matter how hard I tried but today was the day. Unfortunately he's still lunging at my arm etc..but..One day at a time!
-
Well, unless it really is needed in the future I won't be getting anything more done to his wings, or any other birds for that matter! Thanks all for your advice etc. Tom

That's a great video  Out of interest, does anyone here have a Galah? (Or had one in the past) What are they like? I read they're more like a cockatiel than a cockatoo. I'm guessing they're noisy but not as noisy? I remember seeing one when I was younger at a market and wanting it so badly, this was before I had any big birds.

Shona, so sorry to hear this and you have my deepest sympathies. A few months ago I lost Zack, my 11 year old tiel. I had him since I was 10 years old and he was a friend and a part of the family, I sat holding him for an hour straight, leaning over him and by the time I brought him out to bury him he was soaked in my tears, our feathered companions are more than just pets and become part of our lives. Every day for 11 years Zack was there to greet me when I woke up in the morning, and going crazy chirping when he'd hear me open the front gate coming back from school every day without fail. Things do get easier but there's always a void there. Be happy in the knowledge that you gave him a great life in the time he had left and so much love and affection in the time the two of you shared together. Again you have my condolences Tom

I've decided not to get anything further done to his wings and leave it at that, he'll just have to be watched when he's out on his playstand and when I'm not here, be kept in his cage (Unless my sister gets over her fear of handling him) Obviously his flight has to be somehow limited now, so I suspect he won't be doing too much flying. I'll have to invest in a harness now and try to get him used to it. (Admittedly I felt bad coming home from the vets the other day thinking he couldn't fly anymore) Perhaps I've done a terrible thing in having his wings clipped (even though it hasn't grounded him completely. Well, Meiko just flew right across the living room and landed on my arm from a make-shit perch I put together, clearly the wing clipping hasn't had the desired effect! She did say he may possibly still be able to fly and I might need to bring him back, but I'm not sure what to do.

I have a feeling he's going to go through an amazing transformation now that he's in a new loving home, good luck to you and Fred.

I clean the papers out of the cage every second day, and wipe down the perches/surfaces with Safe4Pets disinfectant spray..I occasionally take my CAG Jake's cage outside and give it a good cleaning with a power washer, unfortunately I can't do this with Meikos large cage as it's upstairs but I give it a good scrub when it's needed!
-
You're right, it would be reduced to dust  I'm in contact with someone about a second hand playstand they have, just waiting on the price of postage! Unfortunately the man I bought Meiko off had none in stock as he sold the last one a couple of days before. Thanks all for your posts, I hope soon to have some more pics up etc!

Just got back from seeing the Vet, he was fine getting his wings done. He obviously didn't take too kindly to being wrapped in a towel and did let a few squawks which was expected but he's fine now, she did a health check as well and said he was in good health and just gave me some info on diet etc, his wings aren't totally clipped and he'll be able to glide to the floor/slow himself down is he falls. Overall it went very good and he's back to his normal self now playing with his toys!
