what a fantastic day, every time I leave the room he makes a new sound such as a laugh, water drop, or random words, I was afraid he wouldn't speak at all but he is sure showing me a thing or two. I was also told that he didn't like to be touched, tonight when I went to take him down from his perch he dipped his head for a scratch and continued to do so even on the portable perch and then when he sat on my shoulder. He is a cuddler too! Yahooooooo!

wow, I learn so much from this forum! I was so excited tonight, we were told by previous owner that Beau did not like to be touched but tonight when I went to take him from his perch to sit by me on a portable perch her put his head down for a scratch and that went on for five min and then he continued that even on the portable perch and later while sitting on my shoulder! I was even petting his back but will no longer do that now.

hi all, well we had our first shower today, and I do mean "our" I bought a shower perch and carried him into the bathroom, put him on the towel holder until I was ready and started the shower, I was watching him the whole time to see if he had any fear as previous owner said he didn't like it. I put him on the perch and blocked the main flow of water and he tolerated it well with a few loud chirps, then I carried him to the shower and while he hated it on his head and even fluttered to the floor he seem to like it on his back and even lifted his wings. All in all a pretty good experience I think. We will try it daily and see how it works out. Oh tried the oatmeal and squash and he turned his beak up at it!

hmmm, not sure how to describe mine, they have a metal cage that fits into the little feed doors and they have pins that they fit down into, the heavy cups fit into these little cages and the only way to get them out is to open the doors from the outside. Again, its all part of how the cage is made and why I might stick to this cage. Even the playgym has these cage type holders for the cups. But.......... then again, the "toilet cup" is one of those you fit onto the outside of the cage and he hasn't torn it off.........YET.
-
he is three or four years old I bought him some fresh spinach for lunch and at first he threw it on the floor, I put it in another cup and tada he ate most of it. For some reason he doesn't like this cup, the previous owners warned me he empties it and then uses it as a toilet.......so I washed it out and put in the fresh fruit and thought it was working but think I have learned a lesson! He is busy grooming right now which leads up to this question, I bought the aloe vera juice today, can I also spray my baby conure with this?
-
well for now I am leaving both cages in the living room until I can decide......... what are locking cups? the perches in the new cage are more like dowel rods but the old cage has plenty of ones I can exchange them for. Some are more like a stone, some are like drift wood, some are like cactus root. I figure I will give myself a week to figure this out. Oh, he does say something but its when I leave the room, hmmm is he talking behind my back? lol I am now just repeating the word hello to him. Any tips on teaching him to talk? Oh, also singing you are my sunshine to him. I think he will probably learn "No! Gracie and put that back Gracie as right now that is all I seem to say to a toddler! rofl

Hi all Beau is doing great. I am learning from him every minute! This morning I made breakfast for him, apples, bananas, watermelon, strawberris and oranges, well he ate and then threw everything on the floor. I had a blanket over my carpet thanks to the previous owners warning! lol Well, I left the mess since he was still on the perch by the food when I ran to the store. Forgetting that when I let my two smaller dogs into the house they are snoopy and rambunctious! Yep, you guessed it, the blanket was flipped over and ,strawberries ground into my light brown carpet........sigh, I had just cleaned the carpet yesterday! I had to rewash that area immediately and Beau was making a high pitched sound but didn't really seem to be upset so I finished cleaning the mess and now, I have a little portable perch that I put on the end table and he is sitting beside me. He is watching me and the dogs and snacking on some pellets. I didn't even know until now that he too has the same cinnamon color on his tail feathers as my conure! He is so beautiful! Pictures do not show all the variations of color on this bird with the greys and white and cinnamon and freckles(just like me)lol!

my new tag came with a fairly good size cage but my new cage is bigger. old cage has regular heavy duty bowl holder clipped on the cage, new one just has door for you to clip on a bowl. old cage has play yard on top with built in ladders and two cup holders attached and a heavy duty rope attached for play with clips for other toys. new one just has a cool wood perch fit in between two fan shaped metal pieces on either end. old one has a tray for cleaning under play yard, new one does not. old cage has bird seed catcher thing around cage, new one does not. So, my question is, since the larger cage is so much larger should I wean him to that cage or keep him in the smaller one? He spends most of his time on top of the cage according to the other owners.

what are the pine nuts or red palm oil for?
btdaycare replied to btdaycare's topic in The GREY Lounge
ok going to check out if my pet store has any of the red palm oil this morning. If not I will order it online. for breakfast I gave him apples, oranges, watermelon and he ate for awhile and then threw the rest on the floor. Whew, thankfully the former owner warned my son to put something under the cage door so my old blanket caught it all. Thanks for the info everyone! -

yep I have a daycare........... so far so good, only two kids ages 3 and 4 right now and they love the new bird. I already let a daycare parent hold my new bird and she just can't believe how nice he is. She has never held birds till she came to my house. She always goes back to her work and tells what she held today, she said she feels like she is in preschool/daycare learning new things everytime she comes here! rofl -
He arrived last night around 10:30. I was online in the forum of course and up pulled my son in my van. I was trying to shut down the computer and looked out and his girlfriend was walking around with the bird on her arm! I was freaking out having read all the threads about one gust of wind and they could still fly even though clipped. By the time I got outside my son had the bird and was in the middle of the front yard showing me how to "throw" the bird! Yep, again, in that freaky mode! I was so relieved when he finally handed me my bird! Now, I have to tell you, it was just plain weird holding him. I was so used to my baby conure that the weight of this bird threw me off! lol Well, we got to sit and get to know each other while my son put his cage together, he stepped up great from hand to hand and gave kisses and climbed up to my shoulder and yep, christianed me there too. Is that bonding or what? lol I put him up on his play area on top of the cage and filled his food bowls and water dishes and then finally about 11:30 put him to bed. I was leary of taking him down from his high perch at this time so walked over and said "ready to go to bed"(like his previous owners told me, and he put his head down and I scratched it, then he kinda bobbed and stepped down to my hand and went into the cage just like a real gentleman should! All in all it was a wonderful experience! Today I cut up bananas, apples, oranges and watermelon and put in one of his bowls and he has been eating ever since!

I am so excited, I joined this forum just yesterday in hopes of learning all about the grey before getting one. I have always wanted one and have been looking up online all about them and then came across this forum. I have learned so much from the articles on here and from a quick chat last night. My news is............I turned on my computer and on a Nebraska websight(which is where I am from) an ad was there for a grey and after a long talk with a gentleman I am making arrangements for my son to pick up my new bird tonight! It comes with a cage and everything! I am so excited and plan to be on here a lot today to learn as much as I can before my 3 or 4 year old bird comes here late tonight. He will have to travel about an hour and half to pick it up. Here is what I know about my new bird. The current owners wife works at a vetrinarians hospital so I am sure it is a healthy bird. My question is, will the bird still learn new words at my house? He talks, but not much. He is not a screamer. He tolerates the shower but does not care for it. He loves to go outside and they hang perches in their trees for him to sit in while they do yard work. He is very hand friendly and will sit on shoulders but will get a little tempermental, he has bitten but never drawn blood. The current owner has three children and said a hundred kids go through the house so the bird is used to children. He prefers the husband but is more female oriented? He likes peanuts and other treats. Oh, he used to belong to an elderly person and then when she passed away, her son, a currater of a zoo offered the bird to the current owner and now they don't feel the bird is getting enough attention. That is about all I know. I have daycare in my home and do daycare 24/7 pretty much every day. I currently have one baby conure who is such a sweetie, she loves to cuddle and is great with the daycare kids. I also have a cat, fish, crested gecko lizards and five dogs. Three of those dogs are outside dogs, Irish Setter, black lab, and boxer, except at night where they all go into their owners rooms. The two that stay inside are a cocker and a yorky. Yes, I have a zoo in my home and love each and every animal. Oh, two of my sons live with me and two of the the larger dogs are theirs and the cocker is one of their girlfriends,(she frequently takes him home when she doesn't have school or work). Tada, my crazy life in a nutshell!
