1. Hello, I got my CAG Lily last Sunday. Lily is about 4 months old. The first day she was quiet as a mouse no real noises what so ever. Over the last couple of days she has started to warm up to me and my wife but she is still very quiet. When I walk over to her she will make a clucking noise, when she gets angry she will make a grumbling noise, when she wants my attention she will make a noise that sounds like "tee-doo" and sometimes she will make a really weird noise while moving her lower beak from side to side I can't really describe. Most of the time though she is very quiet. I don't expect her to talk anytime soon and I understand she may not talk at all but I was wondering if there are any tactics for increasing vocalization. At this point I talk to her a lot and my wife likes to whistle to her. She seems like she is paying attention but she remains very quiet. Thanks, Greg
2. I was just reading a few forum topics about wing clipping. I am considering letting Lily's wings grow out, she is 4 months and when I bought her, her wings were already clipped.
3. Sameera, would you recommend not clipping the bird's wings?

Post edited by: Quickdood, at: 2008/08/20 04:22
4. Thanks for the kind welcoming words! I am happy to be part of such a great community.
5. Thank You, I will give it a shot.
6. Hello, My 4 month old CAG Lily can't stand to be on the floor. Whenever I sit down on the floor and place here on it she tries to get back to me. She will first offer me her leg to step up and then if that doesn't work she starts trying to climb on my legs. It seems like she is only happy when she is on a perch and doesn't like her feet flat on any surface. Has anyone else had this problem and is there anyway I can change this? Thanks, Greg
7. Hello, Just got Lily today after a month of research and I am very excited. So far it is a very sweet bird, I am very surprised that we are getting along so well on our first day. She is a little bit on the quiet side but both my wife and I love her. She is sleeping now but wow that bird has some energy, she is like spiderman in her cage. Anyway HELLO TO EVERYONE! Greg
8. Thanks for the cute stories! I'd like to hear more if anyone wants to share!
9. Hello, As some of you might have noticed I am new to the forum and as part of my research I have been asking you kind people a few questions about owning Greys. I think this question may be fun for others and informative for me: When you first got your Grey I am pretty sure there were moments where you said, "I didn't see that coming." What I mean by that is your bird completely surprised you and in a nice or not so nice way. I would love to hear these stories and also any advice you would give a potential parrot owner so they don't get taken completely off guard. Thanks, Greg
10. Thanks for all the responses, I am just making sure I can afford one. One thing I have going in my favor is I have a sister in law who can get me 20% off at the pet store she works at. Thanks again for all your responses. PS: If after reading Tycos_mom's last and you started to wonder like me what trees are bird safe i'll save you the search http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml (found this on another post) also this will probably lead to the follow up question what plants are toxic and here is a link for that http://www.birdsnways.com/articles/plntstox.htm (also found on another forum post).
11. Thank You both for your detailed information. Just one follow up question, I notice a lot of people say they spend a lot of money on toys. Do the parrots destroy the old toys or do they just get board of them? Do you ever rotate toys in and out so if they get board of one you can re-introduce it in a couple of months? Thanks
12. Hello, I was wondering, could anyone write up a quick monthly cost break down for owning an African Grey. I specifically mean the cost of food and anything else required to keep a grey healthy in both body and mind. Thanks, Greg

Post edited by: Quickdood, at: 2008/08/16 05:00

14. Thanks, for the info. I was reading a few other post on sleeping and many people have birds who sleep less than 12 hours.
15. Oh, real quick question, do those 12 hours of sleep tend to be done in one sitting or is there a chance it may take an afternoon nap?
16. Yeah, I have an hour commute each way and 9 hours typically in the office. My weekends are free though and I would definitely spend a ton of time with it then. Thanks for the response.
17. Thank you for responding so quickly. I am very happy to hear that a grey can adapt to the owner's schedule, and the TV idea is great, I am sure they will learn a lot of interesting sounds from watching TV all day. Thanks again for responding.
18. Hello, I am thinking of getting an African Grey soon, I have done lots of research and I am very excited about getting one. There is only one thing I am worried about and that is giving my Grey enough time. I usually leave my house for work around 7:30 AM and I don't get back to about 6:30pm. This means that my Grey will be alone for about 11 hours a day during the week days. When I get home I plan to spend a lot of time with it but will my hours working be too much time away from my Grey? I would appreciate any input because I want to be a good parrot owner and raise a well balanced bird. Thanks, Greg
