Aloha Lu, I used to live in Kauai, left after Hurricane Iniki. I had cockatiels at the time whom lived in an outdoor aviary that was attached to the house. The main concern I would have is that with the large population of wild chickens in Hawaii, that your Baby could be exposed to something that would make him sick. Also, rats are very resourceful (not to mention BIG) over there. If you have a sleep cage inside the aviary that your bir will go into that should be OK...How about leaving the bird on your Lanai (is it screened in?) Janine (Lanibird)

Hello Kristel and WELCOME to you and General! You poor things, it sounds like you are going through a rough patch right now. That has never happened with my grey, whom is now 15 years old. BUT,it has occasionally happened with my Moluccan Cockatoo. He sometimes will freak out and try to get away from me for no apparent reason. When this happens, I calmly put him back in his cage and talk softly to him for a little while to reassure him. Then I give him some time to himself, while coming to check on him every 30 minutes or so. He always comes around and becomes my sweet boy again. I still don't really understand what sets him off but I understand your concerns! Stay patient and loving. Make sure there are not cats or other predators staring through a window, and it's good too, to have a little private area for a shy bird to feel like he can hide. I know this isn't much help, but I really just wanted to reach out to let you know there are lots of us that care!!! Hang in there! Janine (Lanibird)

Hi Goody, It does sound as though your little one is quite possibly asking to be fed. Have you noticed him eating anything on his own yet? Even though, babies with "mouth" things while not yet really eating them. They still need some hand feeding while learning to eat or they get hungry. Let us all know how things are going, otherwise, it may be a good idea to contact your veterinarian, just to be safe. Another thought, maybe something is scary and he feels vulnerable and/or frightened? :-D Lanibird

Hi Jason, Isn't this forum wonderful!?! What a great way to meet interesting people whom share our love of Greys and all things feathered!! Ernie sounds adorable! I remember bringing my Lani home, she was a little clumsy too, she was 2 months old then and will be 15 this month! Being so smart, they do learn quickly how to navigate. Is this your first bird? Be careful of open doors, windows, cats and dogs....! Look forward to hearing more from you and Ernie! :-D Janine (Lanibird)

I feel sick at heart every time I hear a story like this. You must feel awful! I have had my CAG for 15 years and have always been careful to an extreme degree but if I lost her I would surely die from the guilt. Don't give up hope on Max! Keep going out to search, because he must be missing you terribly as well! Many people will learn a valuable lesson from your misfortune. I hope he makes his way home...... Lanibird

Hi Everyone, I know alot of you were following the saga with Tui having flown away. I have kept in touch with Andrew to get updates, and 2 weeks ago he moved to Las Vegas. He still hopes to get his baby girl back though and has friends on the lookout in Kansas. That's all the news about Tui for now. Hopefully there will be happy news soon! Lanibird

Hey Amanda, Welcome!!!! I am also new but wanted to say HI. In addition to my grey, I also have a spectacled amazon and a moluccan cockatoo (talk about loud). When Rocky, my moluccan screams, I ignore him or will go and whisper to him. He has to stop screaming to hear me and will come over and whisper back. When he is quiet and being good boy is when he gets to come out to play. Screaming gets him the cold shoulder and I do think he is getting it! Give it a shot..... Also maybe try some new toys that require "solving" with movable parts and bright colors. Another idea is getting some "Foraging" toys in which to hide food. That satisfies their need to forage like they do in the wild...worth a try! Lanibird :-D

Hello Everyone, I have been visiting this site for quite a while and have been charmed by the many "love stories" of people and their greys. I too am owned and loved by a grey, named "Lani" which is Hawaiian for "Heavenly" which she is! My Lani bird came into my life as a 2 month old and is now 15 and the light of my life. She talks, sings, and dances and is so sweet and charming to almost everyone she meets. We also have a 5 year old moluccan cockatoo named Rocky. He is our performer, singer, dancer and overall a lovable clown. Also, there is Xena (the warrior princess) she does live up to the warrior part.....has plenty of attitude but is adorable anyways. She is a spectacled amazon and is 6 years old. We have, also, about 20 lady gouldian finches in aviaries, and yes, they each have a name! Other household members include 2 rescued german shepherds and 2 horses and hundreds of hummingbirds and other backyard visitors! Looking forward to becoming part of the Greyforums family!! :-D
