1. They do play together. The mastiffs are VERY gentle kind of dogs so I cannot take all of the credit. When they are begging for my food, the little ones will sit on their backs to just get that much closer to my plate. Bad habits I know, but cute nonetheless. I had some concerns originally but they all seem to know their place!
2. See, they all help eachother!!! We say that the little one is training to be a dentist!
3. They give back so much more than I could ever give them. We do our best to give our animals the best life possible. I am only 23 years old and have tons of responsibility but will never complain. I have chosen them and it is my duty to give them the best life I can! For the love of animals.
4. I do adore them, they mean the world to me. However, I most likely will not get more. Being a rare breed, there is a lot of inbreeding in their lines which has caused a lot of health problems. On top of their initial expensive $1,800 purchase price, I have spent about $10,000 on surgeries for various conditions. They both have bad hips as well so I don't think I will be getting more. I hope they just live forever! I do believe that once the dogs are gone (the rott is 7 and the dobie 6) we will just keep the little dogs and the birds. They are enough work!
5. The wall wiping is constant. He drools mostly when people are over as he gets excited so I will hook a towel in his collar for easy drool wiping access. They aren't a long lived breed. The mother is 6 1/2 and the male is 5. 8 years is a long life for them. The only thing that i won't miss will be the drool! This is the funniest picture of the mother.
6. About a 40 lb. bag every 6 days for the big dogs. When my boyfriend and I met, he had the rottie and the doberman and I had the mastiffs. Then there was 4. Then we thought we needed a little dog: Chihuahua 1. Then we felt bad that it was too small to play with the big dogs: Chihuahua 2! I have a sign in my house that says "Welcome to the Zoo" I used to show hunter jumpers competitively and hurt my back so up until recently we also had 2 miniature horses in our back yard
7. I have a rottie as well but don't have any pictures of her at work with me. She is german bred that we got from a show kennel in MI. All are advanced obedienced trained (except the Chi's they don't listen to anything!
8. The male does but the mother only when she drinks. He will actually sling the drool up and catch it in his mouth (disgusting, I know)
9. They do all get along as the large dogs know better (they have been taught). The little ones are actually the bad ones. They nip the big one and won't let them near the couch
10. The red ones are called Dogue De Bordeaux's (aka French Mastiff) I don't know if you ever saw the movie Turner and Hooch with Tom Hanks or "The Italian Job" but they are in both of those movies. They are a rare breed and there are only about 3,000 registered in the US. They are mother and son. Dozer and Kibbles. The fawn is a Doberman and the others obviously chihuahuas.
11. I will start a new topic in the "off topics" room!

Post edited by: ClaireBear, at: 2008/03/14 18:46
12. I am so excited! I hope I get to go see them this weekend! I will let you all know!
13. Ok, I had planned on 6 weeks, just wanted to be sure! I will post pics as soon as I can get some!!!!
14. Well, the baby was hatched!!! The oldest was hatched 1 week ago! The breeder called me last night! Said there are three to choose from as I have first dibs. He said once he pulls them, I can come out and see and choose which one I want! I am so excited. Here's my question. I know you need to quarantine the new bird and I intend to make the vet appt. for the day I pick him up from the breeder. If all is well at the vet, do I need to quarantine him still?
15. This is Cash and myself when he was just a little guy!
16. I'd like to know if anyone travels with their grey. He would be taking a 1/2 hr each way car ride to work 5 days a week. I'm assuming if we start right away that he would probably adjust pretty well? Also, my ekkie needs a very specific diet. What do you all feed your grey's. And I have a 36" X 23" (approx) cage with a playtop that I kept my ekkie in for about 6 mos (before I bought him a huge corner cage), is that sufficient??
17. I am 20 minutes east of Cleveland. Beautiful sunny Ohio! yeah right!
18. My eclectus' name is Cash, the goffin's is Boo, and the conure is Pedro. I have been in contact with a local breeder who has Congo's on eggs. I am trying to absorb as much info as possible as I wasn't properly informed before purchasing my ekkie (wouldn't trade him for the world NOW). It was just a huge learning experience as he was not handled enough as a hatchling and it has taken a good year for him to get used to us. I am the main caretaker of all of the animals and my boyfriend and I have owned our own home for 2 years now!
19. Hello All! I am new here trying to educate myself on grey's while deciding if one would be a good fit for my family. I am currently owned by a Vos Eclectus, a goffin's cockatoo, and a sun conure (as well as 6 dogs ranging from 4 - 140 lbs). Trying to learn as much as I can so please teach me!! Claire
20. Hello! I just found this forum while doing some research. I am considering adding a grey to our current flock and would like some input. I currently am owned by a Vos Eclectus, a goffin's, and a sun conure. I would ideally like to be able to bring the grey to work with me daily. I also have 6 dogs. The birds are kept in my family room where the dogs are not allowed. I have heard that some greys tend to be neurotic and would like some opinions. I want to educate myself to their needs before taking the plunge! Thanks! Claire
