  1. Thats the problem, I just got him a few months back, so I am not sure.
  2. My new TAG talks alot!!! He also makes lots of impressive noises, however, his "voice" sounds very scratchy. You really have to pay attention to understand what he is saying and of course, once you walk into the room, he gets quiet. Will his voice ever clear up? Is this his "baby" voice because he is only 2 years old? My CAG says just a handful of things, but they are crystal clear and he is 4 yrs old. Just curious as to what you guys have experienced with your birds.
  3. Ok, so I never thought this would ever happen, but I adopted a Timneh!!! I came across an ad of a person who needed to re-home their bird. I had played with the idea of getting another bird before, but wasn't in any rush. Well, once I read the ad I couldn't resist myself. He is 2 years old and is going through his teenage rebellion. He was hand raised but now hardly lets you touch him. I know with love and patience he will come around again. Anyhow, the previous owner seemed very knowledgable and gave me some great tips. She also said I really didn't need to quaranteen because she is not a breeder and the birds should be fine. She sold him to me with cage and all accessories. Well, Bently and Beeper were barking at one another! It was so cute! They reminded me of kids sleeping over because even though all lights were out, they kept chirping away, just like kids! Anyhow, today, I decided to let them both out of the cages. Bently usually spends half the day out of his cage and gets back in when he is tired. All was well until Beeper decided to fly over and visit Bently. At first, Bently didn't mind, but then Beeper wanted to scratch Bentlys head or clean his feathers and Bently freaked! They started pecking at one another and screaming. I was right there and would tell them firmly to stop it! They actually listened! They went to opposite sides of the perch, but eventually Beeper was over by Bently and it would happen all over again. I don't know if Beeper wanted to mate or if he was just being friendly. They were both "dancing" for one another. So my question is, can Bently hurt Beeper? I know they are virtually the same kind of bird, but since Bently is a CAG, he is much bigger. Is it best to never let them socialize like that? I can take turns and let them out one at a time, but I have often seen other people show pics of their birds out and they never visit or if they do, they are ok. Is what they were doing normal behavior? was I over-reacting? Please let me know what you think! The last thing I want to do is let them hurt one another.(sorry so long! )
  4. Thanks so much! I love the oven method! We feel like pig pen from Charlie Brown, but replace the dirt that hoveded over him with these darn flies! lol
  5. I swear I do my best to clean out my birds cages and keep the kitchen as clean as possible, but the other day, we noticed an invasion of fruit flies (knats)all over the kitchen. After some research, we noticed an orange had fallen behind a counter and had spoiled. The orange has long since been removed and the area cleaned, yet these buggers wont leave me home. Now they are all over the house...bathrooms, kitchen, bird cages, even my computer monitor as I sit here and type even though there is absolutly NO FOOD HERE!!! What can I do? I cant even give my poor baby a piece of fruit because they all swarm to him. I wait till he is done and immediatly cleam up the mess he made, change the paper and clean the cage (to remove any fruit juice or rinds- whatever!) and they still linger. What is the gestation of these pests and anyone have any idea how to safely remove them? This is getting REALLY annoying!!!
  6. You guys are not going to believe this, but it was reported on the news that there was a tiny earthquake her, in Texas yesterday at around 4:50-5:00am! That is the exact time my Bently went crazy! I truly believe he felt or at least sensed the tremor even though we didn't. Tremors don't happen here in texas and only do so about once every 10 years! Isn't that crazy???:woohoo:
  7. A night light is such a cute idea! I just hope it doesnt keep him up. After about 45min, he finally snapped out of it! I went and sat n ext to him and kept talking and talking to him until he slowly got out of his "trance". He is all chirpy now! Thank GOD, I was so scared! I am sure it was just a bad dream, he has never has an issue with balance. Thank you all for the info.
  8. Ok, this has been the scariest morning ever. Instead of waking up to the buzz of an alarm clock, I woke up startled as my Grey was flapping loudly in his cage. My husband and I jumped out of bed at the same time and pulled back his "night sheet" to see my baby flapping on the floor of his cage. After we turnd on the light he slowly climbed up the side of the cage, but he seemed frozen. I know they say that this is normal when a grey is fearful. It just seemed odd because we were touching his legs and head and he NEVER lest us do that! everynow and then he would turn and face us and at one point he got mad at my husband and bite his finger hard (not enough to draw blood, but still hurts!) I kept talking to him and he climbed on to a perch. I thought maybe a snack would help calm him down. So I gave him a piece of orange. He took it from me but continues the "frozen" stand. He eventually dropped the orange (didnt eben take a bite) and just stood there. It is way too early for him to be up, he usually wakes up around 8:30 am. I call him by name, but its scary to just see him standing there, eyes fixed and then after a few min, he will glance at you. Its been 30 minutes already, could he have had a nightmare? Did he just fall off his stick? Its happened one before, but it was daylight and he just got back up, never acted like this . (loss of balance) Has this ever happened to you?
  9. How is he now? Any better? If he has pain from a crash, it may just take a few days to heal.
  10. Ok i put him in the shower, and upon closer inspection, looks like he has a small fiber in his eye. looks like the water might have flushed it out. i will keep you posted.
  11. My grey is acting funny. He still has his appetite and whistles and all, but he keeps squinting with one eye. It keeps closing on him.He scratches his cheek and yawns alot, but he cant seem to keep his one eye open. Do you think he might have poked it? It doesnt look injured or runny. I was thinking of giving him a bath to see if maybe that will flush out something if thats what is the problem. Now I am a bit paranoid because yesterday my daughter decided to help around the house and she used carpet freshner before she vaccumed. I didnt realize it until it was too late. Could that be the problem and if it is, what can I do to help him? How long before he can come back into the room if I need to have him moved???
  12. Ok, then thats what I will do. Thanks so much. Its always best to be safe than sorry!
  13. Ok, I need an answer here FAST. My husband will be purchasing some Java Rice Fince from a lady who has many birds. I(being as paranoid as I am) am afraid they may be carrying a sickness that can harm my Bently. what is the best thing to do? Is keeping them in seperate rooms for a awhile best? When can they be in the same room? Its not like they will be side by side- they will be across the room from one another. My husband thinks I am being silly and the birds will be just fine, but I am not so sure. My husband offered to keep them in the garage, but I feel bad. He has always loved the Java Rice and they are hard to come by here in San Antonio. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Oh and as an update, Bently still wont step up (we are working on that!), poops on command and saya a variety of different words and phrases when HE feels like it. Did you guys ever see the cartoon with the singing frog? He sang beautifully but only did it in front of one guy and when he would try and show people, the frog just sat there.Well, thats my Bently! lol- Thats ok, I love my baby, the stinker!
  14. Thanks for the suggestions! I will give some of them a try later.
  15. Ok, I am not saying I was a hippy or anything like that, but I did find myself burning incense and candles and using all the great smelling household products when I cleaned and vacuumed. Now that I have my Bently, I knew all that had to stop. What I wanted to ask, is there ANYTHING I can use to freshen up the house that will not harm by baby? I find myself washing the floors with just hot soapy water, but that doesnt give you that great "clean" smell I use to love so much. How about potpouri? ( the dried up flower kind)
  16. I guess life would be a little easyer if he would only step up. I will give him all the time he needs but thought I had read once that someone said that their bird never allowed himself to be touched. I was just wondering if that was a possibility as well. As for the shower, yes I am talking about the actual cage- not a travel cage! I remove all bowls, toys and only leave one perch. Like I said he loved it and I was hoping to do this once a week. I really dont mind, it makes him happy. As for the towel around the hand, that scares him too. He is actually very easily frightened. I mean like the toys I bought him, he never plays with them. I also bought a perch that attatches to the top of the cage and when I placed it up there, he refused to climb on top of the cage and only hanged around the sides. He doesnt like change at all.
  17. Hello everyone. Its me again! As you can see, I took a pic of my baby eating his favorite food in the whold world. Boy does he love corn! I don't give it to him all the time, but when I do, he eats every bit of it! Anyhow, the reason for my post is because I wanted to ask...is it possible he will never step up? I know I have had him a little under a month, but he has really came along in every other department. He now repeats and talks quite a bit (never on command of course!) He lights up when I talk to him but refuses to "step up". I try everyday, offering him treats and toys- still no luck. He raises one foot at me, then decides to bite my finger instead. (not hard, juts a nibble) but if i continue, he starts biting harder. I will keep trying everyday and see if one day he forgets he is afraid of my hand. Also, how often should they take a bath? I saw him trying despertly to bathe in his water dish on Monday, so I put a large bowl in his cage. He refused to use his bowl (I swear my CAG was a chicken in a past life! lol) and continued to struggle to "fit" in his water dish. I felt bad for the little guy and took all food and toys out of the cage and took him (cage and all) to the shower. HE LOVED IT! So he was satisfied for 2 days and yesterday he was back to his water dish trick again. I dont want to be mean, but it was alot to work hauling his jumbo cage into the shower and hoped to do this once a week. Is that not enough? I wouldnt have a problem if I could take him out of the cage and place him on a perch in the shower, but as you know, he refuses to be held. Any suggestions????
  18. I just took it out of the cage and now he is eating! (spoiled brat!) lol
  19. Ok, so I am still buying my Bently things for his cage, and I came across a "Fruit Cocktail Beak Conditioner". Its a large stone like thing that ties to the cage to help sharpen beak. Well, as soon as I put it in, he went at it. Problem is that he wont stop chewing it! Its already about 1/4 gone. He scrapes it and powder residue is all over his face and my chair. It said that its a "treat" because it has banana, cherry, strawberry and orange flavoring added. Should I take it out or just leave it in? At this rate, he will be done with it by tomorrow if not sooner. It states that it has "20% calcium minimun and 24% calcium maximun" I know calcium is something he needs anyway, but what if he isnt eating because this thing is addictive? I honestly havnt seen him eat since I put it in last night. What do you think??
  20. Bently just said his first word..."Hi!"....of course he waited till I left the room, but I heard it loud and clear 3 times so far in the last 5 min!
  21. Thanks guys! I appreciate all the info. Bently is doing great, he now throws "kisses" and like to repeat sounds I make, not words yet, but its close! He still refuses to step up and even though he knows how to climb in his cage when I ask, the other day he just decided to start flying all over the house! He only did that the first time I let him out. As much as I tried to get him to calm down, he eventually few into my kitchen trash can! I think he was either happy or scared because my kids were home. I usually let himm out during the day when its nice and quiet. My kids were no where near the cage when he decided to fly off and find them. Oh another thing, he LOVES corn on the cob. My question, is it best to give it to him ram or boil it as we eat it? He loves it both ways, but don't want to make him sick.

  23. I thought once a breeder removed the baby, the parents would no longer accept it back, even if only for warming purposes.
  24. Thanks everyone! I had no idea this was a common issue. I guess I just jumped to conclusions. Just out of curiosity, why would the parents chew the toes off?
