  1. very sorry to hear this. curious if there is any liability involved. do you sign a waiver in the event of? any legal recourse? I had a neighbors dog die on my watch....a newfoundland at that (BIG dog!) the cause turned out to be heartworms (and not me) .
  2. I went through the same thing.....the arch over the swing (or connection to ceiling in cage) needs to be rigid or it will be a "shake" and not a "swing"....
  3. I concur with Shameless. We got Goofball at the show here just north of Atlanta...paid $850 (CAG) and with tax, etc was right at $900. The kicker here is that (and I must pass on this advice) is if you do get your bird at a show, take it to a vet for a complete physical especially blood work as they could be carrying any number of deseases, etc. That was an additional $300 and did not include sexing which was $65 at our now current vet. We "found" Lucy ironically enough on craigslist in Jacksonville the day before we were going there for daughters b-day. We also "stole" her for $500 with one big A$$ cage included. She's a great bird too
  4. lol....yeah my Lucy "burped" for the first time this morning..... (I'm so proud!) been working on that one for MONTHS
  5. well I've been "feeding" our CAG's cedar perches to chew, which they love. couldn't find it either way on that website posted above which I did find pretty thorough. I also wrap their perches with Jute (Macrame') which they attempt to tear up. Otherwise... it's alot of non-winning lottery tickets.....:pinch:
  6. Thanks Dan, yeah we'll try to pin her down and get a better look. One thing we have noticed is a few of those flight feathers were a bit painfull once they started to come out as she'd wrestle and squak till it gave in (or out?). She did pull a blood feather as well (actually splattered the bathroom mirror!) which I assume is natural. Growing pains perhaps?
  7. I wonder how many hips he's had replaced....and the dentures! probably blind as a bat....can't remember a thing.... forgets where he is and where he was going (good for a smaller cage)
  8. Thanks Judy but my point is....she was clipped over a year ago. That pic was taken tonight. How long does it take them to go through a body of feathers ya think?
  9. ok, forgot how to post a pic. any help?
  10. ok, fist I want to thank Judy for helping find my way back to this thread! ok here are 2 pics....as asked they both fall out and she pull's em while preening. She is not "plucking" I assure you. She looks a little ragged out near the rear but it because of #1 the new tail feathers (finally dropped remaining grey) and #2 her flight feathers are in dissarray) Amazes me to see the pic as it's been well over a year since she was clipped (more like mowed down!) any opinions? thanks again Judy, you rock!
  11. I will try for a pic tonight. She is losing feathers now all of a sudden...pulling them out one by one (flight feathers). She is 18 months old so I suspect it's normal as she is a well cared for bird with no issues to speak of. It was an avian vet "center". Not real sure of the doc that we saw. I'm not impressed somehow. I mean Goofball flies lik a rock. Suprised she hasn't split her breast bone the way she lands sometimes. Can anyone tell me what their "molting schedule" is? from birth?

  13. ok I have a question. How long should a grey go between clips? The reason I ask is our (first) grey was clipped at about 5 months (never learned to fly).....that was over a year ago and I see no indicatiion at all of new feathers. Tail feathers have grown out but she still fly's like a rock! I've been wondering this for a long time now. I think the vet clipped her WAY to much and way too early but we were noobs then (well, not so much anymore). Any thoughts?
  14. hmm...Lucy and Goofball LOVE home made garlic bread, I've never given it a thought. I'm on the "garlic chunk caused the blockage thus death" side...read it whichever way  awful thing to happen regardless....
  15. at our local pet store they had a cockatoo (umbrella I think) stolen right under their noses...seems they had a young pair that were very friendly to say the least and someone put one under their coat and just walked out of the store! It was during the holidays last year.
  16. well when I said "starve" I didn't mean it that literally. By "bumped" I meant increased btw. I think changing her cage would be far more upsetting than pulling her water bowl for half a day till she figures it out. Like I said she has more fruit to compensate in the mean time.
  17. oh I have showed her over and over....she just ignores it. I think when it comes to survival we're all pretty savy by nature. Please don't think I'm mean or insensitive, I aquired her a month ago and not sure if she ever had one in her past (apparently not?). Her cage is the type where the water bowl is actually on the outside and doesn't serve for bathing or anything but beak access. I'll let you know how long it takes her. thanks,
  18. not sure where this belongs but I have a quick question, can AG's smell water? the reason I ask is I'm trying to get my 4 yr old to switch to a water bottle from a bowl. She won't go near it no matter what I do for an introduction. Figure I'll just 'starve' her till she figures it out? I've bumped her diet with juicy fruits (grapes, watermelon, etc) in the mean time but not sure that will help the cause. Anyone with experience on this? thanks
  19. as I sit in my cube staring at this half eaten poptart.... I can't help but understand *exactly* what it's like for a bird in captivity. Perhaps I should find them treadmill as well?
  20. I agree with what Judy said, we got our first bird @ 4 months old over a year ago, I left the country for 3 months and lost the "bond" with goofball as my wife became primery caregiver (no shock there). We just aquired another female grey that is 4 yrs old and fortunatly came from a home she shared with another (male) bird. She has bonded with me which makes things all good. they live in seperate cages (next to each other). The younger bird (goofball) has taken some issue with the new addition, things I have noticed are diminished diet, and she no longer sleeps in her tent. We're working thru thos issues but other than that, the birds seem to get along as well as you can expect. I think we got really lucky with 2 different aged birds getting 'thrown' together like this (but we're always learning right?)
  21. our youngest was raised on a "soak and simmer" mix much like Denise's and *love's* it. She won't get near pellets....our other bird is just the opposite! (nuthin is easy I swear)
  22. she doesn't use heat so I think we're ok no? Sorry for leaving that out...and your comments are always appreciated Dan thanks
