  1. Sorry guys, My eyes hurt after looking at all the succesful project pictures of playstands made from pvc on the forums here.Every now and then I see sopmeone is professing that pvc is detrmimental to Greys and that we are only to use CPVC ( the brown stuff right?) .. Id really like to use regular pvc if its ok, but if its going to pose a threat to Chloie ill def use the brown stuff. Thanks In advance.
  2. Rickster here, I was once the proud owner of a Congo african Grey named Chico, whom I lost during a nasty seperation. My Girl and I laid a deposit on a Tag about a month ago, and Brought her home Yesterday. Her Name , is Chloe, and something tells me, this little package is going to be a fireball....
  3. hello guys, Ive been a member for awhile but haent been on for a while as a i lost my grey in a nasty seperation about 2 years ago.Its too bad the chicocoldnt tell the judge who he wanted to live with,, as he had bonded with me. Im now looking at getting a timneh ( i had a congo) and have been reading but unable satisfy my questions, so id like to ask people who own both: 1. do they have the same talking ability/capacity and do they actually use it. 2.will it be more likely top take to everyone in the house ( kids, girlfriend etc) 3.are their voicing as clear or any different? 4. do they bond the same way .. regurgitate etc..with one person? thanks in advance.
  4. His previous owner was feeding all seeds.I bought him the 4 lb mixed bag of dr fosters and smiths (pellets, seeds , dried veggies, fruits, vitamins all inclusive.Well, he just picked the seeds out and left the rest, now hes eating a few pellets so i bought him a bag of zupreme pellets and this morning i tried a ratio of 4 to 1 pellets to seeds and he didint seem very happy with me but he ate some of the pellets and then started throwing them out of his bowl to get to the seeds :pinch: so .. to make a long story short ,, im working on it....at his pace ..LOL.I also got him a gallon jug of the aloe juice and a 1 lb jar of red palm oil yesterday...so im learnig a lot from this website. Its great. Thanks for your help love.<br><br>Post edited by: rickster, at: 2008/03/27 06:11
  5. Thanks for the thread love. Its just what I needed.I think Chico is pretty healthy then.
  6. Just got a digital scale today and was wondering if 460 grams is ok for a cag?
  7. Well, im not going to buy from him now.But you should know that if you google exotic birds , he is the first link you get.I talked to him on the phone to find out more and he says he sells thousands a year.He has just about everything you can think of.When i asked him about how safe it was he said the bird is in good shape when it leaves here and its guarnteed and insured through the airline...etc, etc etc..Anyways, I think your right. The bad thing is he sells a lot of birds this way just look at his website www.exoticbirds.com and the prices are ridicoulus. Can someone suggest a breeder within an hour or so of state college or altoona pa?
  8. My wife and I are considering buying a baby timneh. My question is, how young is too young? Is it too much risk to accept a bird that is only two weeks old? What special needs would he have besides formula? We went to http://www.exoticbirds.com/exoticbirdprices.html and were thinking of buying from him.
  9. thank you bmustee, i geuss im being a little anxious and i dont have a scale to weigh my bird on a daily basis yet but its the next thing on my list.
  10. When i put my cag on hius back he makes a popping noise.I think its coming form his tailbone but im not sure.is this normal.I know he is mad and dosent like being upside down but were working on that.
  11. Should i be able to feel my birds keel bone when i lay him on his back. Also, when he is mad he is able to make a clicking type noise when i have him upside down, it may be coming from his tailbone but im not sure, its more like a popping. Are these things Normal? Thanks
  12. but he will only step up after i get him out of his cage. Before he would come on top of his cage and hollar for me.Now he runs in his cage when he thinks im going to pick him up.After i remove him from the safety of the cage he does step up for me and will sit with me around the house.I was just wondering if this is enough to keep him from being as vocal as before?
  13. Ok, since my cag clipping (Last saturday) he has been pretty much cage bound. At first he came out a time or two but then he would run when he saw someone coming. Before his clipping he would boogie out of the cage as soon as you opened the door.In the last 3 days or so he just sits on his top most swing in his cage and is rarely vocal.I know that being non vocal can be a sign of sickness but Im watching him in hopes that hes just severly pissed. He has fallen a few times and he cant flutter very well since the bad clipping he received ( which I wont get into in this thread).I geuss I just want confirmation that he is really mad and not trusting his body anymore.Would that keep him from being vocal too though? He will only come out when i towel him. Then hell come down and sit and have a snack but the only thing he says too me me now is the fart noise whne i move to pet him or talk to him or when i leave the house hell say bye bye , I love you .. ( his usual).. should i just keep being persistant in getting him out and give him time to get use to his new sitauation or leave him alone and wait for him to come looking for attention? Thanks in advance
  14. Chico has been cage bound since the clip.He will come out if i get his favorite things. He will come on top of the cage and you can see he wants things to be the same but he runs when i try to pick him up now.I think he dosent trust me now.I geuss ill just give it some time.
  15. After careful consideration I chose to have my cag clippied today.I read several didnt articales on clipping and then took him back to the person I bought him from to have him clipped today. She did a horribble job despite her best intentions. He cant flutter to the floor as she cut all of his primary flight feathers.I think I could have done a better job but wanted to see it done once.I feel so bad now because he drops like a rock. How long will it take his feathers to grow back in? Anything I can do for him to meanwhile?Ill pad his cage bottom, and be extra careful in his handling.the only good thing that came from this clipping is he seems a little more dependent on me and I was able to stick train him a little bit today. He usually just flys away from it.I thought it was a good idea in case another family member had to handle him in my absence. Thanks for looking.
  16. Update: Ive been working with with chico and a babies fleece blanket for his towel. He pitched an awful fit the first few times but i keot using the towel to rub his tummy and eventually m,y fingers and now he will lay there even after i partially remove the towel and close his eyes.Ive also got him where I can hold his feet with my thumbs now so now i just need to out these motions togther
  17. Thanks for the advice, I think I will slow down a bit with him.I just really wanted to be able to take him outside because as warmer weather approaches I am likely to be on the move and not spen as much time in the house. If he is able to go wiht me then we can have out time together much easier. Thanks,
  18. Update : Chico and I are doing fine I cant imagine life without him now. Hes like one of our children.Hes not bit me to hurt me as of yet , though if something startles him he will latch on.He takes my finger in his mouth and chews it ever so gently.I may be pushing the boundries now though and a nasty bite may be iminent as I have began toweling him ( wich he is terrified of) to get him into his carrier ( which he is also terrified of) but its a chance im willing to take as I want him to be able to go places with us.i took him to my grandfathers the other day and although he hated the twoeling and getting into the carrier, he was good as gold once we got there and was very vocal as he set at the table and ate with us.Ill let you know how many fingers I lose towards the end of the week.. lol.
  19. Ok , so ive had my 12 year old grey for about a month and a half now and we have a faboulous relationship.he bonded to me and allows me to pick him up touch his wings, rub his head and back and even just leave my hand on his back as long as im watching his body launguage.( when hes destracted with a foot-toy i can be really touchy) Now,I wnt him to be able to go outside with me and I dont want to clip him so I bought this feather tether. How do i get him to allow me to handle him ( like pick him up by his body )etc without freaking out.id like to be able to put him on h is back etc but grabbing him is like violating him.Help !~
  20. I was given a beautiful tree philodendron and researched to see if it would be safe to have in the house with my bird and some articles say yes and some say no.Does anyone have this plant coexsisting with their bird and is it toxic to a PARRot or not? Thanks for the help.
  21. My parrot Loves me.Ive had Chico (12 year old cag) for 2 and a half weeks now and things couldnt be better. He steps up for me anytime i want him to and steps down the same.He has not bitten me to hurt me as of yet and has only beaked me to remove my hand from his wings a few times. He regurgitates nearly everytime i talk to him and starts with the headbobbing and wimpering bit ( now the regurgitating is getting kinda old...) He will go anywhere in the house with me and gets off his cage and walks across the floor to get to me when im in the room.In short Im no longer afraid of him ripping a finger off. Thanks for the horror stories guys!
  22. I would like to build my bird a jungle gym out of yard sticks.are oak/pine/chestnut and such limbs ok for our birds? I would really like to build him a nice playground and few nuts bolts and washers would be inexpensive. Thanks
  23. My biggest concern for now is that the only way to get him off his cage is to get him to fly off.Im afraid he's not going to like me much or get hurt flying into things if i keep doing this. How do you make a stubborn grey go to bed that dosent want to go in the cage at the end of the night?<br><br>Post edited by: rickster, at: 2008/02/07 02:44
  24. Can i get a diagnosis please? I brought my 12 year old Cag chico home about a week ago.His previos owner was his 2nd home and he did not like her at all.He has taken to me and allows me to pet him when HE wants petted, ..(i.e. scratch, his head, pet his whole neck and back, touch his wings and even his breast). He has regurigitated for me several times and absoulutly loves to see me coming. He wont do much for my wife but she is patient.Heres the problem. He sacred to death of sticks and when one is presented he flies off the cage to avoid it.Once hes on the ground he will willing step up for me but you can tell he just wants to go back to his cage.He wont step from teh cage to my hand he just starts his reguritatting and wimpering and lisfts one foot and then the other. If i push against his breast he backs up.The only way i can get hime in teh cage is to present the stick have him flutter down and then have hime step up on my hand.I dont like scaring him down but I dont know what else to do.Im scared i will ruin what we have built or he will get hurt flying around. Please Help. Thanks
