Wow, I did not know that. My birds will be sad about that. Does Scarlet like pine nuts? My greys love them too.

Welcome Newbie....I too was anti social for a while but now I'm hooked.
-
Thanks Nychsa. I'm excited about making a good foraging environment for them. I made a mini one tonight using a 13 x 9 dish filled with shredded newspaper, feet toys, and little bits of treats (food) that will not go bad. I sat it on the bottom of the cage so they cannot get hurt.

Bird's Exotic - Todd Marcus

No, my birds are not breeders. We have a devil dog in the family...(my husband). It was very important to him to teach them the tune. It is funny to hear you say Bella jabbers away. A great way to get away from those pesty callers.
-
That is so funny Nychsa. My greys still just whistle a lot of tunes (like the Marine Corps tune) and such. They mumble too but because I am hearing impaired I cannot tell if they are trying to form words. I look forward to the day they start talking and I'm in trouble because then I'll realize all the words I say that I don't realize I'm saying around them. My husband says I am a drama queen around the birds. I talk to them in an excited voice most times and I always tell them where I'm going when I leave. It will crack me up to hear them reply like another grey did to another owner on this thread.

jump over the river to Cinnaminson and/or Delran...cedar nuts for the pickings.
-
I can get the cedar nuts here in Cinnaminson NJ at Birds Exotic - Todd Marcus. This store has pine nuts too. Both my greys love them.

The advise given in this thread is awesome and rest assured you are not a bad parent or as another has said a bad parront (LOL). Hang in there. Your baby needs you. I'm faced with the same plucking issues and I'm looking for a way to get dollars up for the vet. In the meantime I'm going to get that hay and stuff so the birds can forage like the suggestions made in this thread. Maybe your baby would like that too.
-
Nychsa that is absolutely hallarious! Goes to show we must be very careful as to what we say around our grays.

I have pictures of them on my cell phone but do not know how to upload them to the computer. Once I figure that out I will post pictures to share.

Thanks everyone. Their names are Messiah and Delilah. Delilah came home to us in June when my grandmother was already here. Messiah came home offically in March and did not have anyone home during the day. Yes, I feel Delilah misses my grandmother and was quite attached to someone always being home. I contributed the plucking to the multiple changes. In every other way she is perfectly fine. She looks pitiful in all her peach fuzz but otherwise playful, healthy, vocal, and loving. I am hoping she stops the plucking because she looks pitiful. I do not draw attention to her plucking but it does bother me. Messiah is perfectly fine. They share a big cage together and I do seperate them when they are outside the cage but they always fly back to each other no matter how many times I seperate them. I guess I will have to consider a vet call but would like to specify what exactly to check for because the last time I took Messiah to the vet it cost me $500.00 with the extensive checks they did on him. I sadly do not have $500.00 to spend this time around. Her stools are fine, she is eating fine, she looks fine (except for the fuzz), she acts fine, and she sleeps fine. Any suggestions on what tests would be appropriate so I don't get banged another $500.00?

Hello, I'm in need of some guidence regarding plucking. I have two African Grey's (male 13 months old and female 10 months old. They get along well together. My female began plucking her feathers around Christmas and I chalked it up to the cage being moved and it being Christmas but my grandmother also moved out to her own place on Jan 5 now my little girl is all peach fuzz except for her wings and her head. My male is fine. She is friendly, loving, playful and noisy as is my male. I have introduced new toys, I spend time with her and him and I spray her and him with aloe vera juice. I do not know what else to do. She does not pluck when I hold her. She plucks any other time though.

I had to chuckle about the feet biting thing. The first time one of my grays went after my toes I was in the kitchen working and I let out a loud yelp. It hurts when they attack the toes. When I'm sitting with them they like to run down to my feet and pick at the socks or shoes to get to the toes. I often wonder why they do that. If they are not doing the toe biting then they are preening my hair. It is funny to see them eagerly preening away at my long hair. My female can get quite flambouent in her preening habits. They love to give mama kisses too. If I get near their cage to bring them out they will promptly give me kissing sounds or if they are on my shoulder they will wrap around to my lips and make the kissing sounds. Its the cutest thing.

Congrats! It will be awesome once you get to hear Klaus yourself. My grays' mumble stuff that I cannot hear. My male gray whistles the Marine Corps Song...almost the whole song. I think he stops so we will pick up and finish the whistle. He loves when we interact with him like that. I look forward to the day I can actually hear their first words...Congrats again on this milestone.
