Hey from Alaska DebT: I just dropped a suggestion to birdmom which may help some. It wasn't until a year after having my second bird in the house did my 13 yr. old Mazy got jealous. I have had to be very conscience to pay equal attention to both birds. One on one and together. Good luck and glad you found us. Bruce & Mazy

Hey birdmom: A big Alaskan welcome. Just a couple of thoughts here. I have a 13 yr.old CAG and last year got a med. sulpher crested cockatoo. My grey thought it was a great novelty for a while then after being in side by side cages for a year she has been getting jealous. I have found that just like kids I have to pay equal attention to both of them. One on one and when I have them together. It seems to be working great. I assume your birds are in separate cages? If not, that is probably a big part of the jealousy. If you have an old pair of glasses you don't need , give them to your bird to have. She might accept yours if she has her own. Mine did. Good luck and glad you've joined us. Bruce & Mazy

Welcome Zeusowner; Hi from Alaska. Mazy and I are glad you joined this fine group of bird lovers. As was said above you won't find a better group of birds and their owners. There seems to be no questions that can't be answered by somebody, and as you can see just about every part of the globe is present Later Mazy & Bruce

Hey coff73ee & Katie: Glad you joined the neighborhood a great group of people here. Later from Alaska

Hey Dan: That's great you have made these great friends in the bird world. Breeders can be so helpful. That's one reason I'm grateful for this site. There are virtually no resources in Alaska. There is a bird club in Anchorage but 900 miles away. If there is an bird vet that's the only place there would be one. There is a vet that flies from Seattle to Juneau every so often, but then we have to fly from Haines or take the ferry. One of the drawbacks to living in the bush. I know it's a off subject but can you play golf all year round?

Joe: That is quite the bird palace toy! You are so creative. Do you or anybody know where I can get that thick rope that holds it's shape when bent. I want to find it in bulk? Bruce

I assume Tulare isn't in Alaska, and I assume you were writing for the "Water Party in Ice Water" thread. By the way,,,,,, Where is Tulare? Bruce

Welcome Sean & Cleo: I'm still a very new member and have learned so much in my short time on this site. These people really know so don't hesitate to ask questions. Most of my questions have been answered by looking up the threads. Look forward to seeing you out there. Bruce & Mazy

Hey KatB: Where I live in the upper most part of South East Alaska in Haines, it is a dry cold. Just 100 miles south is the Tongass Rain forest which is a very wet cold and generally not quite as cold .I think we are more like your Iceland experience. I'm hoping our snap is over for the winter , however January usually has a snap also. My birds don't notice it but the other day Mazy got a wide eyed look when I opened the door with her there. (She isn't very helpful bringing firewood in)

I think we're in a heat wave it's finally above 13 degrees. I'd enjoy knowing if anybody knows of any other bird owners in Alaska. Come to find out there are 5 Greys in our small borough of Haines, and one Macaw.

Cookie: welcome to the grey family. My CAG Mazy is a shoulder rider except when I know she is getting excited or when she's just trying to be the boss. She does have several sweatshirts she likes me to wear but my bird clothes are special for that ( you know poop, holes chewed in them, etc)a thick collared shirt or hooded sweatshirt will save your shoulder and neck. If I'm just wearing a tee shirt and Mazy wants to step on the shoulder she will go part way and then back off realizing I don't have a heavy sweatshirt on. Then she just sits there and gives me the look, like, "Well,,,, are you going to get the bird shirt on for me or what?"<br><br>Post edited by: MazyAK, at: 2007/12/07 06:59

It makes sense, so tomorrow Mazy will get a cold shower instead of a warm one. With warm when I put her on the bottom of the tub and the shower on slightly she just stands there. When I have her on my hand and put her under the warm she crouches and just seems to tolerate it. I'll see if I get a more favorable reaction with a bit colder. She definitely likes to get blow dried afterwards though.

Welcome Roo My grey is 13 years old and went through a little biting phase at 7 when she found her sexuality. No eggs though. I don't let her get too cuddly when she gets in that mood. Sometimes she just wants to be on her own and lets me know with a darting move. Then later she's all friendly, like she's saying "OK I want some attention now. See you out there Bruce & Mazy

DanMcq: Our radiant heat has several zones throughout the house, and two ceiling fans circulate the wood stove heat. I was worried about the fans , but the birds don't seem to want to go that high. They just like to go to the upper balcony rail and look down. I'm finding out through you folks that the parrots are a little more resilient to colder temps than I thought. (thank goodness it's warmed up here, if you call 9 degrees above warm) Bruce & Mazy

so now I have to ask should I shower Mazy in a hot, warm, or cold shower.I've always used just a tad bit more than warm.???? Oh yes, she does the dish thing but likes to shower and then get blow dried. maybe she has been wanting me to turn the cold on???

Now for the other extreme, Alaska. Today it was -8 F outside and our grey and cockatoo were a comfortable 69. I always thought for indoor parrots should be kept in 68 F or above. It's really cool to hear chapala and how their birds are acclimated to the fluctuations. Our birds don't have down vests but what a great idea, what better place. We have a wood stove and in floor heating. We pay close attention to make sure they aren't getting any drafts. There's a picture of my birds in front of the stove on my greeting in the welcome room. See you out there

Here in Alaska my birds are experts on wood stoves & fireplaces. If you have an open fireplace you should have a front grating or glass panel. Especially if your bird flies. My birds are flighted in the house and they learned HOT! Just like a kid. Only once the 1 yr.old cockatoo went onto the wood stove top for a landing, just barely touched it's toe, and took out of there yelling his anger at the thing. The grey just sat there and laughed. Never again. My birds also like to be near the heat but know it can be dangerous. Birds have an uncanny sense of danger, and fire would be a natural.
