  1. i've picked up a couple books and have gone on drs foster and smith website and downloaded a bunch of stuff there. that is all well and good but i do like and really need the hands on experience that a good forum offers. i know GSD.com really saved my sanity after fraulein inga came home. lots of good info on there and helpful people (well mostly; as with any public forum you will have those who bite and snap but you learn to take the bad with the good and discern what is useful)so i expect no less from here!
  2. yes ma'am my first birdy ever! so i have been grateful for the extra preparation/research time.
  3. oh yes i did read that one over. thanks for the heads-up!
  4. oh yes miss judygram i have already requested snaps! but i will wait patiently until the surrender takes place so as to not jinx anything. and it is easy to wait until the right little birdy finds us. it's not about me getting the birdy it's more about the birdy getting its home. i'm told he's a happy little talker and has had the one mamma these years. i hope i am that good match for him so he transitions smoothly. but my buddy knows me so well and knows birdys also so she will be an appropriate judge in the matter. yes indeedy i'll be needing you guys every step of the way!
  5. hey folks, new development in my rescue grey. originally i was awaiting a fine young CAG to go into foster and then to me. well as time has gone by it seems he will be staying in his home (which of course is fine) BUT i just got a call from my fostering friend who has a line on a little TAG whose mamma got a new job requiring more travel than would be fair to her birdy. so now it looks as though i will be getting a fine TAG from a good home, healthy and happy. and i will also have not only my foster friend as a resource (and you fine board members) but his original mamma so i won't be flying blind as a first time mamma. i'm pretty excited needless to say and my foster friend will receive our little fellow soon. i did tell her that should she fall head over heels i would understand which is what her rescue lady said too! she assured me she is at capacity with 3 but hey what's one more, right? so he won't be mine til i see the gold of his eyes ha ha ha hope i got that right. back to the drawing board and time to read up on timnehs more fully. hooray!
  6. we're just a coupla old gray haired softies here at the monkey house. and big daddy the biggest softy of them all (don't believe him if he denies it either) oh i guess i should clarify. we have no monkeys. i am a bad housekeeper is all. my bird friends are very confident that bringing a CAG into the monkey house will not at all adversely affect the current surroundings ha ha ha. they all told me "my birds are messy" then caught themselves and said "sandra you'll do just fine"
  7. aw shucks guys thanks for the warm welcome! inga knows she is to be sweet to katz, children and birds. i do allow the guilty pleasure of keeping the back yard squirrel-free however (she just rushes them and watches them scramble up the trees). but with the mulberry tree which gives an abundant feed to all the neighborhood birdies and the seed feeders outside, she knows "no no birdy" and so does not chase them. they are even getting a little used to her and do not immediately fly off when the back door opens. early on, at an office i used to work at, there were geese at the retention pond. she, at the time thought it was great fun to rush them and see them fly off in a flapping honking display. but then one day a big crane was standing in the water so she could not see how tall it was. she thought it was a goose and when she rushed it, the crane held his ground and extended his wings to which inga did a cartoon-style full stop, turned around and returned to mamma quite taken aback. she didn't think it was quite as funny as i did. but she truly is a sweet soul and very caring to the smaller creatures (except squirrels ha ha ha) so i am eager to see how she and CAG will take to each other. as long as he accepts her all will be well as there will be no trouble at all in her accepting him. and it is so easy to help animal rescue, can't take a lot of credit there really. we do what we can and feel good about it. just small things here and there. i know i could not take the heartbreaking parts of rescue but i can do the fun stuff! sounds a bit selfish i guess...
  8. our reigning queen kat, fluffy, ruled the monkey house with a iron paw for 25 years. next up miss cozy for about 18. the grand old man, scratch, is nearing 20 with plenty of zip in his scrawny orange frame. our old english sheepdog was a hooligan for 14 years. the vet asked what was our secret. the only thing i could come up with was her love of the neighbors' trash. not a very PC answer but i suspect it was truthful. she was the happiest lawless canine i ever met!
  9. so far so good i like your forum, people seem very friendly and helpful here. i am awaiting my CAG from foster/rescue so i am working on learning all i can before he comes home. big daddy and i are somewhat active in animal rescue, our fraulein inga (german shepherd dog) is our beloved rescue and all our katzen were foundlings. so we are pretty excited to open a new chapter in the rescue book at the monkey house! full story when our birdy comes home. don't want to jinx anything you know. oh here is one little question for discussion. do we change our birdy's name when he comes home? i know it is customary in dog rescue to do so but wonder what is the opinion in birdy rescue?
