Hey guys. Since rocky has returned, hes been refusing his baby food sometimes(hes 3months old). Another thing i have noticed, before he poops, it looks as if he is forcing, he crouches on his perch, and i hear what comes out. Today when i came home i checked his cage, and he pooped, really big, and it was like the baby food wasn't digested. I'm guessing maybe its throw up? He eats his harrison pellets, but i think he crunches them up more than actually eat them. Is there any solid type of food i can give him to get his poop solid?

Thanks for all your support and advice. He didn't take the bait for his cage/toys set outside. I woke up at 9:30am and went to my car to get my work schedule i heard birds chirping and the neighbors parakeets. But then i heard a distinct sound that rocky made. So i yelled, and the sound kept coming. I follow it to my front neighbors tree which was very very high. I kept calling it, and i saw him flying around the tree. I thought he would come down to me, but he flew to my next door neighbors roof, so i ran to my house, hoped on my gate and jumped on my roof to call him over, he then flew to the next door neighbors tree. So i ran over there. I called and he slowly came down the tree and onto my hand, and i ran inside with him. My neighbors thought i was on crack or something running around saying Rocky, I love you, Come down. But ya, to whoever has a bird fly away, listen for their call/chirp, it is way different from outside birds, try going around and yell the words you say the most. I'm guessing looking for them towards the morning after they get lost is a good idea, because rocky didn't sleep at night, and he was starving, so I'm guessing when light came, he was frantic to find home. He went to sleep in his cage 30min after i fed him. The funny thing is, he was sooo scared when he got back, and he started making noise he never made, like a grunty pigeon type of noise. I hope he didn't hang around with pigeons and get a disease or something. Should i be worried about that?

This picture was taken today, you guys know what that means!!!

No sign of him tonight. My jaw dropped when i saw him fly that high, he can barely fly in the house. I wish i had a bucket of water so i could've thrown at him {Feel-bad-0002006A}

Post edited by: paullywalnuts, at: 2007/07/30 08:35

After having rocky for 3 weeks, he flew away today. He was in front of a window with a screen, he was put out of his cage unattended by my mother, and pushed the screen off, i heard the racket and ran to see whats going on, and saw him flying, i jumped my neighbors walls, trying to chase after him, he landed on a electric wire, and then flew off again. This sucks, he wasn't even fully weaned, he was feeding twice a day. Any tips to get him back? I put his cage outside with his favorite toys.

I bought some toys for him a ball, and connecting shapes. I came home from work, and he had messed his whole cage up. I'm guessing he was hanging from the connectors, and he fell, his perch was flat on the ground and his food was spilled around with some left in the bowl. He has learned to step up, and he is Tweeting like a bird when we talk. One thing i do like and don't at the same time is him being obsessed with me, he will not get off of me after being with me for an hour, when i put him on his cage, or somewhere to go get a napkin to clean up his poopy he tries to go after me. I think its cute but i don't want him to get so attached that i cant sit in the living room with guests and him going crazy. About the cage thing, is it safe for him to be in a big cage now? I mean he is young and still climbing around, I've seen him fall, what if he falls from the top and hurts himself?

So this is the third night that i have brought home my CAG. I decided naming it "rocky" before i get the results. So far for the third day knowing my family, he has adjusted well, when he is on the ground, he always goes up to me and tries to climb me. He makes bird noises and likes to cuddle. As usual in all my posts i have a question. I had him in my room Monday, and Tuesday just so i can keep an eye on him at night. Since i saw he was doing well, i moved him to the living room tonight so i can get my desk space back. and also since thats where i plan on putting his big cage, i want him to get used to it. Is it okay for the sudden change? I mean he seems like a happy bird overall, and i bought him a few toys and he seems like he can handle it. Is this a good idea, or should i bring him back to my room.

Sounds like a good idea. I think he hasn't gotten the chewing and swallowing concept down. He just nibbles on most things and leaves it in his mouth and it falls out. But he gobbles down the formula. Thanks for your comments. I threw in a few toys, hopefully get some perches and get a bigger cage soon.

Today i fed him formula in the morning just in case he wouldn't eat his seeds, veggies, and pellets i left for him. When i came home from work he didn't touch any of his food or water. I tried feeding him formula again, but he wouldn't take it. I even tried soaking the pellets in water, he still didn't take. But he is fun and happy, still getting used to me picking him up, he's scared that theres nothing outside of his cage, and when he tries to step out he trys to hang on the sides of his cage. So i picked up my first grey from the breeder today, im really excited and happy. I wanted to take some pictures, but my batteries dead. Hatch date according to breeder was may 1st. He/she seems adjusted already, tried balancing on my hand but still cant even stand balanced on the perch. Appears to be a picky eater, it was eating seeds at the breeders, and still likes to get formula. So any eating problems are ruled out. I do have a few questions. He/she stands on 1 leg and with the other makes a fist (supposed to mean something?) Do baby greys sleep on their bellies, because it was sleeping on its belly. I did get harrison pellets, hopefully i can slowly transfer him to pellets. I will try to post pictures asap.

Ive only met the bird once, and i will be taking it home tomorrow, is that a problem? And for those of you who have had your birds since they were babies, did they have behavior like hissing? I also tried offering it a seed and it hit my finger, as if it was knocking out of my hand or out of its face.

Post edited by: paullywalnuts, at: 2007/07/09 04:33

Hey everyone. Wanted to start a fresh thread since last one got a little big. Well i visited the breeder that was 30miles away. He had 4 10week babies available. 2 of the 4 were very protective of their space, when i got close to their cage they would hiss at me. There were 2 other ones in another cage. They seemed more calm, but 1 did the hiss thing again. And the last one was very calm, but scared. The breeder took out all 4 and i had a chance to play with them. 3 of them just were trying to fly and ran away from me. The calm one just stayed in its place and let me scratch his head, but opened his mouth when i moved my had fast/swift. I decided to get one from the breeder and left a deposit and i am going to pick up tomorrow. My question is, should i get the calm one, you guys think their might be something wrong with it, and why its not running away like the others. The breeder has been giving them mixed seeds. I will be stopping by a pet shop, what kind of feed should i get for a 10week old?

With the price of what he is asking, I am pretty sure they will be sold by 2 weeks. As far as them rejecting food is that a problem? He said he has 6 to choose from, is there anyway to determine which is better ie, more feathers/smooth feathers/hyperness/avoid biters? If i decide to buy it the same day or maybe after, do i need a big cage? Or if I bring it home for the first day its okay in a smaller cage lets say 2x2x3?

I found a bird store/breeder guy that was literally 3miles away ( I saw a sign). I went there, and there was a lot of macaws, cockatoo's, and yes, Greys. I asked if he had any babies because the ones in cages were 3yrs +. He had 5 in the back, and i saw them, and they were all sold. I asked him the price, and he watned $1200 for the babies. It was a little steep, and he would not guarantee the life, for example like 3 days after you take it home. I checked online, and found a in home breeder about 30miles away. He seemed enthuasastic about birds, saying how younger ones will bond with you more. They are 9weeks old, and he said they are almost weaned, and sometimes rejecting food (is that a problem?). He said they eat solid food. He wanted $750, which seems like a good deal, but more important he seemed like he wasnt in it for the money. He mentioned all the things i picked up reading on the forums. So i want to go see them on sunday, and hopefully see how it compares to the store that wanted $1200. What do you guys and gals think, can i handle a 9 week old? I only work 4 days sometimes 5, 9am-4pm. Will i have enough time to feed it and check on it?

I have emailed that person, seems to be a scam. The lady is in Cameroon(by Morocco). Its funny because she has her number listed as 213 area code which is Downtown La. Anyone else dealt with a breeder that ships?
-
Has anyone here successfully bought a bird from a breeder who shipped?
-
Is there breeders in socal that can guarantee the life of a grey for around 1yr? Ive heard too many stories of birds with diseases and what not dying after a few weeks. Like I said, I am willing to spend, but i need more of a guarantee.

Thanks for the response. What i meant by afford, is the price i considered to pay for the bird. I have taken consideration to food/vet bills/toys/cage/playing area. I have just set a price in case for example, i need medication if the bird is sick, for DNA test etc. I can pay $1500 for the bird. But lets say i pay $1500, and discover i need to pay $100 a week for medication or what not, that will be a problem.

Hey everyone. My name is Joe. I have been reading up, researching on greys. I have had parakeets in the past, but i guess you cant compare parakeets with parrots. I have been looking for a place to adopt/buy a grey, but there isnt a place that is reputable that i can find. I have found some sellers on recycler.com but it all seems like a scam. I will not lie, money is something i do take into consideration. I have seen many prices ranges for these greys. ive seen as low as $300 to as high as $1500. I am not able to afford anything above $600-$700 as of now. And there is always the worry of scammers online, and getting a hold of a sick birds. So i come to these forums in hopes of finding a healthy companion, and sharing raising him/her with the forums. So if anyone can point me in the right direction to find a breeder/seller (preferably in socal) i will appreciate it. THANKS!
