  1. Charlie seems to shake his head when he gets excited, very sweet.
  2. Yes Judy, I do plan on leaving his feathers alone, I never wanted them clipped in the first place but he came to me that way. He lost another one else today, yay! I've noticed charlie chopping on some shells that are attached to one of his toys lately, wonder if loosing feathers makes one want to chew on sea shells? Thank you guys for your replies.
  3. Hi, Well, charlie Parker lost just one of his flight feathers that got trimmed when he had his first wing trim when he was a baby. He took flight off of me today and it came out while trying to fly. I picked it up and was shocked on the size of the feather. Wow! That came out of you? It was hollow and white. It was good to see him loose one of those cut ones.
  4. Hi everyone, Just wondering if any other greys shake their heads frantically at times during the day. Charlie shakes his head sometimes so fast that it's a wonderful he's not dizzy lol. Seems like he does it either when hes frustrated or happy.
  5. Hi all, Just wondering if any of you guys have given your kid (grey), any types of fruit juices? Charlie seems to enjoy them a lot. I have given him the Welch's apple juice and some lemonade flavored strawberry. OH and he just absolutely has to have a gulp of my partner Andy's coffee in the morning, that's all the coffee he gets and I don't think that Andy let's him have it everyday. He also likes the juice that is with mandarin oranges. I bought some frozen veggies with lima beans in it the other day with the corn, carrots, peas and green beans in it as well. Charlie never had lima beans before, he seems interested at the moment.
  6. Charlie does it whenever I offer my cheek to him, he gets so excited. He's nibbling on some sea shells right now that are attached to a new coconut toy I got him today.
  7. Hello all, So I've noticed the past couple of days charlie Parker making these little baby sounds and grunts when he wants scratched, it's so darn cute! He likes it when I lay my head down on the back of the couch so he can rest his beak on my cheek. The deep tissue massage starts and he just slowly crouches down till his belly is almost resting on the couch. He really enjoys his head and neck rubs. I also noticed that when he does this his Lil wings are open a bit. Anyone else experience this? I'm sure you have.
  8. Hi everyone, just to clear up my title.... I am the 5 month old grey owner, Charlie Parker is 9 months the old as of the 15th of April. Sorry for the confusion if there was any. Thank you all for the warm welcomes. Yes giannine, you're not too far away from me. Great weather we are having huh?
  9. Well I decided that Charlie Parker needed his little toe nails trimmed the other day. I tried to sand them down with an emery board last month but of course all Charlie wanted to do was chew on the darn thing so luckily I had a couple of them and let him chew on the first one, which turned into the next and next lol. I was rotating them to try and keep him busy. I did get a few done but not enough. I decided to go an buy some bird nail clippers, used them and I don't think i'll do that again. I accidentally cut one of his front nails to short and it started to bleed everywhere, Yep, I panicked all right. I had some stop blood liquid junk that didn't do a thing. I tried to apply pressure but no luck with that either. A quick call to an emergency vet said to make him stand in flour to stop the bleeding and it worked immediately, close call! I know I wasn't suppose to panic but I couldn't help it because I was under a lot of stress from being burglarized not 3 hours prior to trimming his nails and other people saying to me stop the bleeding, stop the bleeding. boy did I feel guilty about hurting my lil boy, I didn't even care about the house being broke into at that point. The only reason I tried to trim his nails was because when he stood on a flat surface his toe pad wasn't touching the surface, his nail was pushing up his pad and even made the toes kinda bend sideways. I read that the nail should not push up on his toe at all. At least now I know flour stops toe nail bleeding and that I need to have some on hand so I don't have to run next door in a frenzy asking for flour. I think Charlie forgave me within a day, so forgiving he is.
  10. Hi, How's your baby? I have a 9 month old timneh grey, his name is Charlie parker. I feed my baby a wide variety of pellets and seeds like pumpkin, sunflower and peanuts. He just loves mandarin oranges and the juice that they are in. I also give him mixed veggies that you can get at the store that are frozen, birds eye is the brand, he eats a bit of that everyday. Bee pollen is put on top of his food as well. I don't give him any chips or things that have salt on it. He looks at a chicken bone with fear at the moment but maybe later on he'll try it. I have learned that you just have to let your pal eat and try what he wants to, never force him to do things he doesn't want to do or eat. Oh yeah, we leave music on at our house while we are both gone or a TV show, Charlie likes the back ground noise.
  11. Hi All, I'm John. I picked up Charlie Parker, my Timneh African Grey, at the end of October of last year, 2015. I found him online after researching the behavior and learning ability of African greys, I found it very interesting and challenging. Charlie was hatched on the 15th of July 2015 so he is approaching 9 months old. Let me tell you... I am beyond words on how to describe him, he is such an attention getter, loves to cuddle, and just flat plain astonishes me everyday. I think I love him more than any other "animal" I have ever had. I am 46 years old, have a partner of 10 years and I am retired from the navy, 20 years. Yes I still have a job doing the same exact thing I was doing in the navy but as a civilian, sweet job and pay. I live in Washington state on Whidbey island in the city of oak harbor. Charlie has only met one other bird that is a conure and likes to "beak " with this bird (Tilly). Tilly doesn't like that but does tolerate Charlie I suppose. Charlie really likes to be outside and will "cry" if I don't take him with me when I go outside. I am now associating that with asking him if he wants to go outside, yes he is clipped, I asked not for him to be clipped before I got him but yes he was clipped when I got him. I want to let him grow out new feathers so I can begin the scary task of letting him learn to fly. Going outside will only be done with his harness on when he gets those new feathers going on. Right now he just gently glides while he flaps like crazy but he learning to feather out his landings instead of thumping on the ground, such a good boy! He is learning new things everyday which just amazes me and puts such a smile on my face. Charlie is out of his cage ALL day with either my partner home or I, when we're not here or have him with us, we have to put him in his cage, sad but safe. I try and introduce him to new and different things occasionally so he doesn't get to freaked out if I show him something new. right now he adjusts to new items in about a day or so, his little growl is very amusing, I imitate him and he just looks at me like no! I'm suppose to do that, not you! He bit me pretty good about four times the first evening we got him, I learned I was going to fast. Have not seen blood since the first day. Charlie knows that if he bites we ignore him for a little while so he doesn't bite down hard anymore. We have this bird human language going on, I know what he wants already, is that scary lol. He is a shoulder guy and doesn't have issues with hanging on, I am very gentle and move slow for him so he doesn't loose his balance while he's on me. Andy, my partner, is a little more stern with him in that when andy wants a kiss or wants to pet Charlie, andy gets what he wants. Go figure, Charlie Parker has bonded more with andy than me. I also get a lot of love from both so I am happy. Charlie eats very well. I give him a local pet store mix of seeds and pellets along with zupreem fruit blend and smart selects also a little bit of harrisons high potency fine pellets. I also add in yogurt sunflower seeds like 7 or 8 seeds on top of his food with a couple banana chips and pumkin seeds topped off with some bee pollen. during the day he also gets a little bowl of mixed veggies. His new favorite treat is mandarin oranges with juice, just 2 little slices of oranges though. Fresh water with a splash of aloe vera juice twice a day. He weighs around 300 grams, I weigh him about 2 times a week. alright thanks for reading, I look forward to being a part of this get together.
