  1. I thought greys were supposed to love looking in the mirror. Poor little guy, didn't know what was going on. Finnigan sits on a basket on my vanity counter as I put on my make up morning...he LOVES himself, could stay there all day looking in the mirror!
  2. Wow, I don't know about cataracts, but here is a link to the Vet I use, she is in Tampa, FL. If you like what you see, you could call and talk to her and see if she has experience with cataracts. http://www.floridaveterinaryspecialists.com/about/doctor36.cfm I also am interested if you find one that specializes. It would be good to know.
  3. That is terrible, it makes you question what the universe is trying to tell you. We had that happen with our macaw...the breeder was soo upset and in tears, we went back to see her with full intentions of just getting our money back...figuring that a B&G just wasn't in our future. She was feeding the last baby she had (the only one not sold, we passed him up as his beak was a little crooked), and that baby crawled up on my husband and loved on him the whole time we were there...I guess that was what the universe wanted, he came home with us and has been the BEST bird we could ever ask for. Don't worry, you will find the perfect baby or the probably more true...the perfect baby will present itself to you. So sorry for your loss.
  4. Great advice...keep talking to him, if he wants to talk, he will later. I love the little noises they make anyway...sooo cute!
  5. I just got Finnigan into his harnes...its the aviator harness and he doesn't mind it a bit. Now, it took over a month of just working with him to get him to wear it, but it was worth it. I was washing my motorcycle the other day and he was with me and something spooked him and he flew but he was on his leash, so he made a mild landing in the grass and was no worse for the wear. His wings are clipped but I never take him out without his harness unless he is in his carrier. It's worth it. In my opinion.
  6. Finnigan had a good time passing out candy too. He was like Sparky though, as still as could be. After about 10 trips to the door, he decided he had enough and waited on the couch instead of going to the door.
  7. Congratulations! Now Harrison is two years old? I just started working with Finnigan, he is 6 months. I don't push it, but have always said good potty when he goes, so now I just take him wherever I want him to potty and tell him go potty. Sometimes he does other times he doesn't...but he starting to get the message that I don't like it when he potties on me!

  9. I also have a playstand on wheels. It's great because my son (13) who loves to stay in his room and play video games, gets home from school and will take Finni out and love on him for a minute, then he goes on to his stand and my son just wheels him in the room. Finni likes the company and plays on his stand and usually will get some after school snack as well! Both of birds are on their stands with the family whenever we are home. I think it would suck to have to sit another room and listen to your flock having fun without you.
  10. I think everyone has very good points. I also think people steal birds and that is a possiblity just as much as your bird flying away. If found, I could prove he is mine. I would rather a chance of getting my Finni back then not having any chance, especially since he isn't banded.
  11. OH, he loved being outside. I wish the pic would have come out a little better but alas, I'm no computer expert. He is doing very well with his harness, I'm very pleased.
  12. We have our blue and gold chipped...neither our b&g or my grey came with bands. Once Finni is older (I won't do it until he is over a year, just personal preferance) then I will get him done, otherwise if I need to identify him, how else would I be able too? It was a simple procedure and it didn't bother Loki at all...he was as spunky right afterwards as he was when he went into the vets office.
  13. Okay, wait it didn't work, let me try again.
  14. Okay, I have been working with Finni for about a month now with his harness...we just started getting it on fully this week, so I took him outside for the first time without being on the screened lanai or in his carrier...here is his picture. I hope it works.
  15. I found my mom wadering aimlessly through rows of birds and toys at the bird show I went too. Although, I was still very young at 10weeks, as soon as I saw her, I knew she was the one! She was a little dense though, and when she put me back in the box with my clutchmate, I had to stand on my brother's head to get her to realize, we were meant for each other...humans! Sheesh! I did make her pay a hefty sum for that mistake though...bet she minds what I say better in the future! My mom is a little older at 38, so she is a bit harder to train, but I'm whistle training her, and she's learning to come when I call. I do have one brother a giant b&g macaw...he isn't very smart (he only says hello and hot, can you believe that?) and he is very pushy with my mother...I like it better when dad is home so I don't have to share. I don't like dad very much, I think he spends too much time swooning over that big blue doofas...so I bite him so he will stay away. Sometimes, I treat him nice, just so he will let his guard down and I can get in a good bite later. hee hee My mom better treat me with respect...I have a nasty little bite and I hate to use it on her, but sometimes humans can be very thick headed. I will say she does go out of her way to make sure I have properly prepared food and she always shares her lunch and dinner. Sometimes I even make her try the food first, just in case she made a mistake and didn't wash the new food properly, once I see her eat it, I will give it a try. She is like my poison tester! I like it especially when she puts peanut butter in my celery and puts little raisins and sunflower seeds on the peanut butter! I have also trained her make sure my toys are plentiful and traded out often, so I don't get bored. I wasn't overcharged for her, but she sure did need some training, we are almost there, I wouldn't trade her in now after I've put in all this effort and work!
  16. Isn't it funny what we do and don't do! No one could possibly understand. I purchased a new globe for the birds room (got a travel theme going on in there) and Finni was having no part of that globe. I'm pretty anal about everything being in its place...there the globe sits on the dining room table, waiting for Finni to decide its okay. I also spend my evenings braiding palm fronds from our trees in the back yard, as Finni loves to chew them. I would never tell my friends that! haha
  17. What about placing newspaper on the bottom of the cage(not for Ponti but GreenT)? Seems like it would be alot easier to replace those instead of washing towels. Unless, its just that your concerned about her falling, but I didn't get the impression. More of a distraction. I also have a box in Finni's cage, he is still young, and my vet told me that they often feel insecure not having a place to go into and "hide". I place a piece of newspaper inside the box (like a shoe box, standing on its side so the top and sides are covered but one side is open toward the cage) that extends beyond it, and place his foots toys there. Anyway, the box might make her feel a bit more secure and the newspaper something to scratch at rather than the hard bars on her face and if she has a few foot toys there, they might distract her as well and becasue she is young she doesn't have to perch to play with something. Just some thoughts, I'm not expert but, in my limited experience, greys seem to me to require a "free thinking" "step ahead" kind of parent.

  19. Your stories are sooo wonderful! I love reading them. Finni doesn't do too much yet, but he has started to do his wolf whistle in my presence and my B&G has started to say Hot...Between the two of them whisteling and yelling Hot...I'm feeling pretty darn good by the end of the day (even if Loki, my B&G, is talking about Temp and not me!).
  20. I didn't even think about that! I'll have to see if he will do it on video and enter. Thanks.
  21. Cool. Thanks, I've always done step up...I guess I just never thought of it as training as much as just basic behavior skills. I'll start working with Finni tonight. Should be fun.
  22. Did Josey always speak in front of everyone? I'm hoping that Finni is still just a baby and will "come out of the closet" as he gets older and more confident.
