  1. Can anyone tell me if they have made an area parrot-proof(like baby proof) for their grey. I have him in his cage while I am at work for at least 6 hours a day...I don't want him to start feather plucking...I want to leave him out of the cage..or is this not recommended? How long is too long in the cage? Thanks
  2. Would it be better to feed greys at a specific time each day or just better to leave food in his dish all the time?
  3. I bought another brand from the internet supposed to be oranganic and give the bird a long life, etc. it was a little more than the Harrisons but my bird will not touch it. When I brought home the Harrisons, he doesnt want to stop eating it. Harrisons is expensive, but cheaper than the other one I bought.
  4. I just wanted to thank everyone for the advice about what to feed my grey.. I ordered this expensive organic food/pellets and my grey(wouldnt touch it)--He preferred the Harrison's food from the vet. He loves it. I recommend the Harrison's to anyone that wants to supplement their Greys diet.
  5. Is it true that a male grey has to be over 5 years old in order to be capable of breeding? what age are they "mature" enough to breed?
  6. Anyone in this forum or know of someone that had a bird after it was two years and never talked but is well tamed...Can they learn how to talk. I bought some training cd's and the cd says it is best to teach them from baby. I'm not sure if it will be a waste of time to try to teach him. and how long to I try? a year? two? Once in a while I hear him kind of mumbling, but very seldom...any one can help me on this? much appreciated
  7. I am not liking this name Xerxes too much anymore, it is a little hard to say and not endearing enough. I am still getting to know this bird and he is friendly, but does not being pet often. any suggestions on a new cute name--its a boy thanks!B)

  9. Thanks for that...I think the main idea with his training videos is to feed the bird less so he is hungry when you have training sessions, therefore causing the birds to perform for their food or food in exchange for good behavior.
  10. Is it true that the birds have to be kind of wild to be breeders? can one put two domesticated grey together to breed? the person I bought the bird from says he was going to use my bird as a breeder but my bird was too domesticated.
  11. Has anyone used the parrot training videos from birdtricks.com...that guy "chet" I think his name is? I just ordered pellet food for my Grey from his website. Supposedly he has this organic healty pelletfood for birds...are they all the same? Does anyone know of the best food to feed a grey as far as pellets?
  12. Can someone tell me if greys need to bathe and how often. His previous owner said to mist him with water..but how often? thanks
  13. Thanks for your reply, I think I will try that and take him for an early morning walk before work so as not to wake up the neighborhood. B)
  14. My Grey is quiet most of the day while I am at work and in the evening and will whistle a little but nothing major. Although every monring at around 6 am he starts this whistling sequence, sounds like a call and then squacks loud and then he will stop, then again for a few times. I love the sound personally but I have a neighbor who complained to me and I dont want to upset the neighborhood and I will move before I let my grey go. Does anyone have any suggestions. I thought maybe I can take him outside and for a walk first thing in the morning so as not to make too much noise (i live in an apartment) Also does anyone know if greys are known to make a lot of noise...i thought they were somewhat quiet. Thanks
  15. Hi Thanks everyone for the responses, Im so glad I found this forum! My greys name is Xerxes(Zurky for short) and he seems to like the name. I am starting to get worried about the noise factor in the morning. One of my neighbors complained to be and I promised I would try to do something to aleviate the noise it makes every morning. Does anyone know if taking the bird out for a walk would be helpful. Or should I just let it squack. I am not sure what it is doing, if it is wanting attention or wanting to go outside. Is this a normal thing for greys to yell in the morning. All day and night the bird is quiet , though I am wondering if the bird starts to feel more comfortale it may start vocalising all day. Any help with this is appreciated. thanks!
  16. hI thanks for the reply I appreciate it. I brought him home about a week ago and he was very quiet. The past two days he has been very vocal in the morning while I get ready for work and he seems to do this whistle sequence which is fascinating to me, it sounds like a dog whimpering, then he makes a sound like a chimpanzee and then just various whistles. thanks again
  17. Hi I am new to this. I just recently purchased a Grey congo that is roughly 2 years old. I bought him from a breeder who did not breed him and was selling him for someone else. The grey was around lots of other birds. I am not sure of his history and was just wondering if my grey can learn how to talk being in the environment with my family who is around him and caring for him. I still love the bird even if he never says a word. But my question is can they pick up speech even if they a few years old or do they have to learn it from baby? Thanks
